I have never in my life walked by one of their kettles without dropping in a couple dollars. They were always pretty high on my list due to their response in the Johnstown Flood of 1977. Before the water had even went down, they were on the scene with food, water, and coffee.

The Salvation Army has always been one of the few charities along with The Lions Club and that I give what I can too when I see them fundraising, believing that most of the money got to where it was supposed to go. It may or may not go to where they claim. Either way I’ll never give another dime after reading that B.S.

Fully read the statements of the Salvation Army Commander in Oct of this year regarding their response to "critical race theory" (he puts it in lower case letters), fully read that .pdf document that was linked, and understand the teachings of Jesus Christ regarding how God feels about everyone.

Nothing they say advocates that white people should apologize for being racist unless they are racist, and that is in the context of a conversation with folks they are racist against!

Jesus taught us that all are the same and he taught by example of how to treat others who were hated because of their origins, ethnicity, or disability. That is the core of what the SA is STILL saying.
Yes they do offer support to the LGBTxyz... community, but they also do so to everyone because, as the Bible teaches us, "all have sinned and fallen short of the grace of God".

First thing to do is find out if this is true. I have given them money over the years because they seem to be a good mix of Christianity and actual hands on charity. I am willing to investigate before I ditch them.

As far as charities go I recall that the Salvation Army gave 98%+ of the contributions back to their programs. Contrast that with the thieves at the Susan G Komen foundation and others like that, they only give roughly 55% of their take back to their stated cause. That’s how the CEOs of “non-profits” get rich while fleecing the gullible or well intentioned.

Our local American Legion always collects items and money to support the less fortunate people in the community. They have a special thing for the kids. We also send things to the troops.
That is where most of my donations go. I also give to our church programs.

Dad used to talk about the SA when they got back to Sterparone, the SA would be passing out coffee, donuts, and cigarettes to the crews. The Red Cross was SELLING it to the crews. My grandmother donated a couple of coats to a Red Cross clothing drive for Britain during the war, and stuck a little note with her name and address in the pocket, hoping she might get a response. Few months later she got a letter from England and the lady that wrote it basically said they were thankful for the Yanks help and they would have had a hard if they were not able to buy the coat from the RC. I used to give exclusively to the SA, now it looks like that has gone down the road.

There is not an organized charity that appeals to me. My late parents gave to local folks they knew were in need of food and clothing, and my dad had some folks power or gas cut back on. These were not people that lived off the welfare system most were too proud to take money, or too ashamed that they got in the situation to begin with.

There is nothing more racist than demanding a specific race to apologize for their entire race.

I found out that any donations they received that were valuable, ie, nice antiques, china, etc,. went directly to the commander's house. They never went to the resale centers.
That stopped my drop offs and donations. That was years ago.

We took these donated boxes out to dedicated drop locations in the devastated communities and put them out for self-service for the people in need.

I drove away and would just park and watch... looked like hyenas eating a kitten... chit flying everywhere... the only thing EVER TAKEN (and not tossed on the ground) was name brand stuff in mint condition that could be sold on EBay (or wherever).

Summary... Make you donations and efforts to help... LOCAL ONLY... and KNOWN NEEDS.

I had a different experience. We did a reno for one of their churches and I was impressed by the altruism displayed by their members. They footed the bill for some work at the commander's house as well and was surprised at how concerned he was about keeping the cost as low as possible. He lived a very frugal life. I can honestly say ive never supported or donated to the Salvation Army. Not because of political or religious ideology, I just don’t believe in helping others.

I do drop a handful of 3/4” washers in the kettle every once in a while just to see what it feels like to be a sucker.

You don't need to compromise your principles to help do good work.

We have, on occasion, mailed gas cards, or grocery cards to people.
Makes it easier to look them in the eye on the street.

I throw dimes at the bell shaker.

Sometimes I’ll say “duck” if I’m feeling kind.

Otherwise, I let their chest act as a backstop.

Feels good to give.
