Had my second shot yesterday. First one was NBD… just a sore arm. This time around, not so good. Feel like I have been rode hard and put away wet. Failed to get the license tag of the truck that hit me. Not much fun.
I was warned the second shot would be worse than the first but for me it was only slightly more painful than the first and only lasted a day or two...
I got my annual flu shot and my second Pneumonia shot last week and my shoulder hurt for a couple days and I was nauseous and dizzy for a a few days... much worse than the Shingrix shot....
Had the "original" shingles vax in Jan 2015, the newer 2 dose vax in April and June 2018, no problems with any of them. I had the chicken pox twice as a kid in the late '50s.
My father had a compromised immune system due to cancer treatment. This was in 1962. He required several pints of blood every month or so, One of the pints was contaminated with the shingles virus. He came down with the worst case of shingles his doctor had ever heard of. While the shingles did not directly kill him, they made his last few weeks miserable, and weakened him to the point where pneumonia took him.
If necessary, I would force anyone I cared about to get the shots at the point of a gun.
Had shingles about 35yrs ago, I was about 34 at the time, miserable rash down my ribs and under my arm, ribs felt like they were broken. When the first shot came out I asked my doctor about it,and he told me it was expensive, and not covered by my insurence. I asked how much and he said $200. I laughed and told him is he ever got shingles he'd be throwing C notes at anybody that could help. When the new shots came out I got that also, and like others have said, the second shot was a kicker, but well worth it. You never want to get shingles.
Here's my dilemma, about 3 weeks ago I got my first shingles shot, I had shingles about 12 years ago and don't want it again. My shoulder hurt and I felt punky for a day and a half, no big deal. About 3-4 days after the shot I started breaking out on my scalp, shoulders, and chest. Over the next few days it spread down my arms and back, eventually reaching my left foot, but not the right. The sores looked like chicken pox at first but as they spread they were much blotchier and very dense in some places. I went to the Doc and he'd never seen anything like it, he put me on a week long course of an antiviral med just as a precaution, it didn't seem to help. So I went to the dermatologist, who also didn't know what it might be. He prescribed a steroidal creme, the lesions started to recede but it didn't really seem to me to be a result of the creme but of course I can't say for sure. The sores heve receded to only a few areas on my back, chest, and scalp. I'm still treating them with the steroid. So the big question is do I get the second shot? Every doctor I've talked to says get the shot, it probably won't happen again, even though they don't know what it is, of course it may have nothing to do with the shot, it could be just another benefit of old age. The consensus seems to be that the risk of recurring shingles is worse than the risk of having another major breakout. I've got a few months to think about it.
Minor soreness after both shingles shots, a bit worse than any other shot but not unbearable. If you did have or just think you might have had chicken pox, you absolutely want to get shingles shots.
The second shot made me sick as dog for about 12 to 14 hours. I felt terrible and still had to go to work. But I do not regret getting the shot. My mother in law got shingles and it was terrible for her. After that I got the shot. Seeing is believing!
My wife(at age 77) got shingles in October of 2019, the terrible rash went away after several weeks but the awful pain is still with her. At times it is debilitating. It has profoundly changed her life. Just getting old is bad enough without this sh*t. Believe me, I got the shots.
