I live outside Buffalo and whoever said it is less windy is full of schitt! Reshingled our (new) house three times last year. Seems 40mph+ winds have been pretty normal the past year, with multiple 60 and an 85 mph days.

yup, gotta love people that don't live here spewing that crap.
wife drive over the pass the day it hit the wyoming record.
seems like the big horns east side is a damn funnel.
same with douglas to casper. far out it's windy down there.
we only get wind from one direction here.. and it's always a warm wind so no worries.
one problem here is that its 2022 and not 1982 .....were already overrun with refugees from California and Colorado! the places you want to live have seen a HUGE increase in cost recently very limited economy, better bring your job with you

Depending on where you live windbreaks might not grow. If you want a garden either a hoop house or greenhouse is needed. I have been in Wyoming 11 years and saw -42 actual temp before adding in windchill. You do not plow snow only once you do it every time the wind drifts it back. Try getting someone to work on the house can be tough. But other than that I would never leave or live anywhere else.
I live in a commie state. I’m getting older and I have thought about retiring to a red state.
With that, I think there are better places than where I am politically for sure. When you think about the outdoors and the things that you want to do when you retire, the weather here rules.
Unfortunately, I think that anywhere you go in the United States that you think is a escape route probably has the same problems as where you are currently living. Especially if you’re trying to have conveniences of a city. Homeless people, crime etc.
I think maybe you need to stay where you are but get out of the city into a much smaller community to minimize contacts with socialist [bleep].
Seriously. The United States of America is very close to being over.
The good.... the list is long if you value freedom..... The bad.... wind and for some winter It gets a solid thumbs up from me
I tried to get the wife to bite on moving to Wy. I took her there in the winter, so she would understand what the conditions are like.
Wind was pretty bad all 3 days. Fair amount of snow as well. It was the wind that she couldn’t overcome.
Me, I’d live in Wyoming in a half a second.
🦫
Well, I see the problem there. You should have taken her on the three days that the wind doesn't blow in Wyoming.
The wife was actually doing ok (at least in my mind) Casper was nice. The people were like I’ve come to know anywhere that haven’t been exposed to large doses of Liberals - friendly, giving honest answers to any of our questions. Maybe, too honest.
We were having lunch just outside of Casper, in a relatively newly built out community. Our female waiter was from Wy. She had moved away for 20 years, only to recently move back with husband #2. She tells my wife she hates being back because of the winters and wind. Said she now feels stuck. Oh, shít ! Face palm knowing the damage that waitress caused in minutes to my dream.
I’m watching my wife taking it all in as her internal scale of Love - Hate was dipping fast into the hate category. I knew it was over.
My only fleeting hope was that the house and property we had just looked at, maybe it had her hooked deep enough. $1.7 mil for a beautiful house with 140 acres of shooting bliss that touched the base of a mountain.
Brother Beav, I remember the conversation we had regarding that property, it is probably worth twice as much now. My advice was wrong..... ;( Crazy times with covid and all... who knew?

I’ve lived almost half my life on the Oregon Coast. I can’t get any farther away from the City of Portland, unless I swim in the surf.
Two years after my Wyoming dream got crushed. I found a house and property that is 45 minutes from the city, but it’s out in farm, Ag land.
I’m more isolated from people than I am at the Coast. I have 4 neighbors. We all have between 40-60 acres separating us. I’m behind two gates and a half mile from a two lane paved road.
If you’re coming to my place, I either know about it, or someone is looking at me holding a firearm.
You can find a sanctuary for yourself, away from the people who you chose to not live amongst. Just takes time finding it. Start looking.
Brother Beav, I remember the conversation we had regarding that property, it is probably worth twice as much now. My advice was wrong..... ;( Crazy times with covid and all... who knew?
Bro, I hear you...It was a cool property. Even with a few neighbors, it was still center fire Mecca!
I’m likely going back this year for a mule deer hunt outta Gillette.
Wyoming, for me, is that dream that got away. Damn being married.

All joking aside Casper and Gillette are not exactly the best weather in the State or the easiest places for a wife to accept.
Think Cody or Sheridan if you want the wife on board. That's as good as it's gets.
Cody has lots of public ground and Sheridan is a bit greener.

I heard that. Unfortunately, the information came a little late for me.
Gillette is only a hunting destination for me. I only know one dumb-ass who lived there. He just got hitched to be married and moved to Casper.
Hope he see’s this, too. Hey, Cinch if you read this.... I’m coming to kill p-dogs early summer. Make my room up and make sure I get a big spoon. John, isn’t much about sharing his good silverware.
We've visited Cody twice in the last few years either in July or August. Wonderful spot. Not sure about the winter though but it sure is nice in the summer and everyone has been warm and welcoming.
Been thinkin really hard about a move out of this piece of crap state. Thinkin wyoming but want your thoughts on that? Goods vs bads.
Not sure of your financial situation, but when I was looking towards Wyoming a few years back, land of any quantity was expensive beyond my wildest imagination.
Texas could be the most disappointing state you ever go to. After you hear all the great comments by Texans about their state, you can drive thousands of miles looking for it, and never find it.

You will have to come out of the cave at least once a year for the Hatch crop.
Some here may remember eh76, who has been in WY for decades and loves it. Communicate with him frequently and many of the conversations include reports of high wind and rapidly changing temps.
On a serious note, New Mexico, if not run by democrats, would be pretty awesome.
People in NM are used to the government tit and arent likely to spit it out any time soon. Espanola ... is the first stop for cheap smack and coca headed north from Sinoloa, and aint anywhere near to being a happy place. Their crime stats and overdose rate would make you think the place was the size of Dallas. Its so bad there even the Detox and Rehab places are corrupt. NM is textbook as to what happens when democrats hold sway for more than a few decades.
That being said, its one of the prettiest places Ive been to and the weather doesnt suck even considering the altitude in the northern part of the state.

Wife had/ has family there ( chugwater) Mostly gone now but we enjoyed the trips up. We are too old to move now, but in the off chance please don't screw it up.

And a national article, back in the early '70's IIRC, called our town "Smack City, USA" Ain't gotten any better. Last year, they busted a dozen or more of the Syndicato bunch for dealing, murders, etc. Some of our prominent locals (sarcasm).
This in a town of ~ 12K. I've lived in Las Vegas and Espanola - not much difference between them, other than size.
I reckon we got a better than even chance of righting the ship.
I think that's pretty right. 1) No matter what you're running from, it will find you. 2) If we don't right this ship (USA) nowhere we might run will be safe. Bad as things are, right here is the last best hope for humanity.
Me thinks that all those 'name' states have been ruined, or are in the process of being ruined, by out of state paranoids (and liberals) moving in. And before this trend started, rural meth was already changing the landscape.
Nope, there is no hidden utopia in the USA. Some of you should consider staying in your chosen spot and doing your best to ignore the govt. Thats what I do as I cannot live without an ocean. Who is saying that Texas might not go blue in 6 years? There was a time when Colorado was a Wyoming and now look at it!
one time i left laramie close to dark headed west in a 72 chevy 4wd, some how missed the freeway, then found it again, drove all night at 30 mph , kept thinking why isnt any one on the freeway, about daylight i was somewhere around rock springs when i ran into the arms closing the hwy down, got a stearn lecture from a trooper about stupidity,,,, from there to evanston i seen some of the biggest mule deer along the hwy, 35 years ago so some details may have been forgotten ,,, i do remember sliding backwards down the hwy into evanston though,,,,35in mud tires and ice in a short bed 4wd, fun times,,,,,
wife and i spent a week cruising backroads wy couple weeks ago,
lander, thermopolis, cody, pinedale, went to the elk refuge couple times, i worked at saratoga , west of laramie, and at kemmerer when i was young, east montana is wearing on me after 15 years, long drive to any elk hunting without a draw tag, 7 hour drive to any decant trout on a flyrod, phesant numbers have plummeted, big muledeer getting hard to come by, and im in the field 250 days a year scouting, i meant working,,,,,,
the flyfishermen were doing great things the other day while we were there and we didnt pack a rod,, the dinosaurs in thermopolis was neat to see, and read about the weather in that basin,,, i see wyoming in the future, lander or cody probably, and another string of mules for the big mountains,,,,,,,
wyoming will be the free'est state the longest. I have tried to figure out a way to move there. its just too damn cold there. some parts of it aren't particularly very pretty. there is no state income tax. sales taxes and property taxes are very low too. The only tax I think that is out of line is it appears they hammer the living crap out of you for registering newer vehicles. If you drive older vehicles it looks like registration is in line with other states. anything under about 4 years old and you get pummeled in cost.
Just FYI - the least windy town in Wyoming is Lander.
They did used to say that about Lander. 40-60 mph is a bit breezy. Pretty much no place in Wyoming is not windy. Rawlins is windy, Lander is windy, Casper is more windy, Cheyenne is really windy, Cody is windy, Sheridan/Buffalo can get quite windy depending where you are on the slope outflow areas, Gillette is windy, the NE is not too windy, the desert is very windy. And when it is still air in winter, that is when the sub-zero temperatures really set in. A perfect place if you like cold.

For a state that is so dependent on energy extraction to keep household taxes to a minimum I wonder how much longer that can last. I guess the legislature can suck tax money out of the wind farms but coal is no longer a cash cow and in fact is dying there.
There are no least windy places in Wyoming. It was about 0 this morning. Should be colder and snowier and windier this whole week.
We must be neighbors Ralphie, I live just north of Cody.
My ex boss grew up in Newcastle but has lived all over the state and he said the wind in the black hills in NE Wyoming aren’t as bad as in the rest of the state.

LOL. Well put. -15 here, more sub-zero predicted.

Perfect slogan. But there are a few really nice days during tourist season...as long as the forests are not burning.
No kidding. It felt like living in a smoggy bubble last year. Couldn't see the mountains a couple miles away, couldn't see town, difficult to glass animals. Was gloomy for a good bit.
Not all of Wyoming is windy! If I had to deal with the winds that most of the state deals with....I’d live underground or be looking elsewhere! I don’t do wind! memtb
If I were to leave Iowa as close to Wyoming as I want to be would be Dodge City Kansas or the Flint Hills. I guess I'm stuck in Iowa for the duration. But, I understand why you want out of Washington. Another State lost to the leftist idiots.

Same here.
Need to avoid the downslope areas. ( And perhaps the southern half of the state!)
In Cheyenne. Windy, bitter cold, blowing snow, fast changing weather without notice, windy, more wind, yearly hail month that will rip your siding off, roof destruction, pound the chit out of your vehicles. Closed roads in and out of the area for up to 2 days. I've no plans to move away.

Perfect description of Cheyenne.
I did leave Cheyenne. 1) need mountains to be happy; none close enough. 2) too close to Denver. 3) not cold enough. 4) got tired of wind-blown pebbles in the face while riding my bicycle for training.

good point, but at least the legislature does that instead of just spending more. Utah where I live just does that. We have billions in surplus every year. what does the state do, just spend more money. this is why I say wyoming will be the freest state the longest.
Unless you enjoy howling wind, subzero winters, snow 9 months of the year, icy roads, potholed streets, skyhigh vehicle registration, expensive housing, out of sight land prices, lack of basic shopping needs, nonexistant public transportation, scarce medical services, Californication of your neighborhood, along with your city council and school board, 20 percent high school drop out rate and usually the highest gas prices in the state, you might not want to move here.
Try some undiscovered (as yet) quiet little places that have much to offer for the person who wants to get away from it all, such as Farson, Baroil, Muddy Gap, Kinnear, Big Piney, Moneta, Waltman and Fort Washakie. You might be happier there.
Montana sucks also.... not only high wind, but azz deep snow and rural homes with a little land start at a cool $million. Although you may find a bargain in Crow Agency or Browning...

Guess I’m not surprised. If it’s been happening in AK, Wyoming shouldn’t be a shocker.

If a dozen Californians move to Wyoming it's noticeable..... If a million Californians move to Texas it is also noticeable... See how that works?
If a dozen Californians move to Wyoming it's noticeable.....
If 200,000 registered Democrat voters move here, the state flips blue. California could peel off that number without even noticing the loss. The wind is our friend, as annoying as it is at times.

Me too. I'm not far away in eastern Idaho but Wyoming has no stare tax and has better schools and some great hunts. The I decided to look for a piece of land near Alpine last week. It looks like Jackson Hole prices have really influenced Alpine. I was amazed how expensive land is in little old alpine. I like Wyoming as a state but would prefer to be on its west side and it's hard to find a town with more than 1 grocery store that isn't crazy expensive on the west side. Cody seems like it would be ok but it's hard to get to from everywhere.

The only windless place I have found is under my house. With the crawl space door shut. And duct-taped!!!
But we have good points too. #1 we have few communists by percentage. They congregate in a few "liberal' towns (meaning communists can't stand on their own, so they ,love hive-mind. ) Towns with a high percentage of communist idiots are Laramie, Jackson and Lander.
Now consider that a "high percentage" in Wyoming is around 20% or in the worst places maybe 1/3. The thing I do like about MANY Wyomingites is their open contempt for communists, so the incoming one find out pretty fast they need to feel "accepted" in the few commie-areas or they get no respect and are told regularly how stupid they are. I have been to no other state where being a Lib-Tard is called out so regularly. Lib-Tards have thin skin and offence seems deadly to them. I DO like that!
It gets Cold? Ummmmm ...... well ............. OK, yeah. No arguing that. But not as bad as many people like you to think. Other states get as cold or a bit colder, and few people make a fuss over them. Wyoming has some tendency to be brought up because of extremes and records, but it must be remembered such records happen maybe one time in 50 to 100 years. So.... if I am asked what's the coldest I have ever seen here, it was -64F (not wind chill....REAL temp) BUT. That night broke all the records going back 76 years. Most years late December and most of January the temps get to -15 and down to -25 nearly every night. That's common. Day time highs in the sub-zero to low singles digits most years. So, that's cold, But not all THAT cold. Wyomingites start to pay attention and talk about it when it get near -30 and it's common conversation when it's close to -40. But that quite rare. If you move here from southern California, Texas, New Mexico, Mississippi, Florida Alabama or Arizona you are in for a shock your first winter, but if you come from many other states and simply by a good winter coat, boots, hat and some mittens you'll never have any problems. If I have to go to the south in summer I dress for it. Do the same for Wyoming winters and you'll have no problems. A hint for you is to buy such things in April or May. Getting what you want in the middle off a cold snap is not a good plan. Remember the snow tires BEFORE winter too!
Come to Wyoming with a mind-set to fit in, pitch in and help (not a short term activity but a life style) and go out of your way to let others know it, and in no time you are one of us. Come with the idea of building your own nest egg at the expense of others and you'll find you'd better be 100% self reliant because few will help you if you don't seem helpful to them 1st.
I think county folks are that way any place you go. But Wyoming is the lest populated state in the USA so we have a far higher percentage of country folks than any other state. That's why the extreme difference in fitting in or being unwelcome is so noted about Wyoming. We are no different then Texas country folks, Alabama country folks or Main country folks. It s just that in most places the highest percentage of people are city folks and that's not the case here. The "golden Rule" you were taught in 1st grade is what gets you friendship and acceptance here faster than it will about any other place you go. And as with country folks in other states as well as what I saw in other countries--- from Burma, Thailand, Rhodesia, Mexico, Paraguay, Cambodia,--- or even right in New York state to have good friends FIRST BE a good friend! Country folks think the same way most places you go. We just "got more of um".
All of these posts on towns in Wyoming, and not one mention of Dubois? The home of Welty's general store, what else would you need? What about Kinnear, population of 44. Much bigger then Morton Wy. So many choices!
Hawk Springs, Gebo, Cumberland, Carbon, Almy, Lamont, Jeffrey City, Ervay, Moskee.
Ha, ha. I went to school with a guy whose family moved to Lander from Gebo. Also have an acquintance living in Jeffrey City. No, I have never stopped at Monking Bird.
I was working construction near Soda Springs Idaho quite a few years ago, and we were struggling trying to land a sheet of rolled steel with a crane while building a storage silo.
The wind was pushing it around pretty good, especially because off the shape, as you could imagine.
A co-worker commented on how bad the wind was.
Another from Wyoming said, " This is nothing, the wind in Casper blows harder than this inside my house."
