Got a few tickets for speeding and other small infractions. Didn't pay such tickets, turned into a bench warrant. Fast forward 2 months, just got paid, thought I would go to the public safety building to pay my fines. Went to the cashier and she said to have a seat while she pulls up my fines, next thing I see is this HUGE Samoan Police officer telling me to put my hands behind my back...
They put me in this waiting room and handed me a phone to use, took me about 30 minutes to get the nerve to call Mom at work. Though I wasn't booked into jail, I came pretty damn close. That was the only thing my Mom kept from my Dad. Dad would have left me to rot.

I have, street racing and dui, 71mph over the speed limit in biloxi, around 1983.

Prearranged racing they called it. I knew the cop, sold him motorcycle parts at the dealership I worked at, he wrote us both a speeding ticket and let us go.
Told us if he wanted to he could take our license and lock us up. I never let on I knew the guy and never told the other contestant I knew him.
He came in the shop the next week, I gave him a nice discount on some R90 BMW parts.

Now that my LE career is completely behind me I can say this w/o repercussions from the administrators who did not seem to understand the difference that sometimes you need to see the grey in the "black and white" of the law.
There were more than a few times I saw situations where it appeared that something got spun out of control and a good person who normally would never have any contact with LE outside of speeding or some trivial nonsense had things snowball and ended up getting charged with whatever. These were not bad people. It was just a cascading series of events due to relationships or dumb things. What they were NOT was the 5% of society that takes up 95% of law enforcements time (normally)
Anyways, I have on more than a few occasions violated all manner of policies. Not handcuffing certain people until I got right to the jail. These people were zero threat and did not need a 30 mile ride in cuffs, but had to be walked in in cuffs, so I would pull over a block before the jail and slip them into the cuffs. Then take them straight into an area to get bonded out and skipping all the steps in between, and even calling a local public defender (guys and gals I had a good working relationship with)for them so they didn't say or do something even more damaging to their situation. A little "off the books" advice on how both sides work, so they could make smart choices.
Basically walking them through a system so they would not get eaten alive. Plus they had no business being in a holding cell with a bunch of thugs anyways.

I was about 20 or 21. Decided I didn't want to swing a hammer every day so I laid out one day, and applied for county cop. They took my prints and I filled out some paperwork. Got a call that night saying there was a warrant out on me for a $40 check. Apparently I bounced a check, and moved without leaving a change of address. Turned myself in the next day, had to sit around there 10 hours after paying my $25 bond. Cost me about $250 more in court. I got to see everybody get booked & hear what the charges were. Mostly young black dudes for statutory rape
Close. Underage drinking in CA a very few days after my return from RVN. Rather than book me, they called the Top who came and got me. Confined to the barracks over the weekend, the to the CO on Monday. Company punishment (with my consent) was an immediate return to The Land of All Bad Things. RB
Years ago I got a speeding ticket. While was sitting in the court waiting my turn they brought in a kid on 2 counts of failure to appear for traffic violations. When the judge asked why he didn’t appear the idiot said he didn’t have any money to pay the fines so he didn’t bother. Wrong thing to say. The judge blew up and gave him 90 days.
In 1959 as soon as I finished AF Basic Training and my technical school, I got stationed at Biggs AFB in El Paso TX. Soon after arriving , some of the more experienced troops decided to take 4 of us rookies over the bridge and get us "broke in" so to speak. All 4 of us only 18 years old and green as gourds. Anyway, we got to having too much fun in a cantina and wound up spending two days and nights as the guest of the mayor of Juarez Mexico. A real adventure, that was!! First Sergeant came over and bailed us out and got us back to the base where we had to face the Squadron Commander the next day. We could have been in severe trouble, but he figured we had been punished plenty already, let us off with one month of extra duty and pay back the First Sergeant. Had to go to the Credit Union and borrow the money, took six months to get it paid back.
Should have been in jail probably 1,000 times or so for DUI before I quit drinking but never did, don't know why not except for maybe someone watching over me.

I’ve been there a few times but it’s been 20 years plus. My last time there I was 24. Most of my trips to the county were over getting into fights or otherwise drug related in one way or another. All but once It was just a few hours or a night in the holding cell. I spent a few weeks in general and figured out that I needed to make some changes.

I'm "older" but just last year went to Police Academy and POST qualified (Got the class guidon too), and appreciate the long-timers in the world I have entered. Lots of wisdom there.
Prior to my time at a fire station I worked, the crew went to look at the new police station under construction. They kind of wandered around and found the cell, one guy stepped in and another closed it. Lo and behold, the vendor installing the cell door left for the day. With the key. It took a little over an hour to get him back to release the prisoner.
DUI when I was 18, 1978. 1 nighter. A buddies older brother was in that night, too. Small world. 2nd time at a Pink Floyd concert, busted for possession when I was in my mid 20's. Paid the fine at the station and on my way in 2 hrs. Missed the 2nd half of the show.
Been taken there once, was a juvenile, around 1970, didn't have to spend the night as my dad came and got me. Small town and he knew the whole police force of 2 cops. Never went again but close a couple of times.
Like sagebrush says….a guy has to use discretion once in awhile.
I agree with both of you. I had complete discretion on any misdemeanor other than assault on a family member. Based on Dept policy, that required a physical arrest. My point is, I believed in the idea that just because you can do something, doesn’t mean that you should do something. I cut a lot of people a lot of slack because I believed they deserved it. Those that had to go but were decent and cooperative, I tried to coach and advise on how the process worked, what to do and most of all, what not to do. In my career, I had a lot of people thank me, as I left the booking desk, for the way they were treated. Not everyone got that courtesy. Some people need to be in jail! I’ve been retired for 3 weeks and I’m glad all that is behind me.

Yep, 18 years old, minor in possession. A friend was with me. He was out within an hour. About 3 hours before another bud got me out.
Was driving but passed their little sobriety test.
Old man knew before I got out of bed the next morning. When he saw me he asked how my Friday night was. Told him the story and he said, "you got yourself into this you're on your own to take care of it".
Judge knew my parents and asked in court what they thought. I told him exactly what dad said. Judge didn't care for that.
Forgot to pay a ticket when I was 19 and of course got pulled over on a Friday night so I had to sit in the whole weekend until I saw a judge on Monday. Cop didn't show up so "charges" were dropped. I'll never forget that first night when I realized that i was taking part in a game called society that I never agreed to yet there I was locked in a cage against my will.
My dad never talked to me about anything the way I now wished that he should have, but when I was about 15 he told me to come here. He told me that I was coming of age, and if me and my friends ever find ourselves in a jail cell, you better get used to the scenery, because Im not going to bail you out.

That happen twice to me my parents let me sit a while, one was for probation violation.
Came close a few times in my youth and probably shoulda done a night or two in the klink a few times when I was young.
Now I’m nearly 49 and should be old enough/bright enough to avoid any entanglements with law enforcement (outside of helping my police chief father in law or game warden brother in law with whatever…).
At 15 had a cops kid tell the teachers that I was threatening him over a girl which was complete vs as my buddy was talking to her. Spent 3 months being held 45 minutes after school so he could get home. Come spring there was an Assembly and I caught his lying ass on the track field and beat the living deal out of him. Was arrested and charged with assault and locked up. Cuffed and thrown in a cell. Went before a judge and had to pay the hospital bills does that count cicu 1969
Visited a guy in county jail, every week, for 8 months. Before his jail time, I had been assigned to be his mentor. Obviously, I failed as a mentor - he tried to rob a bank.
When I would go to visit him, I would have to wait along with all of the other family and friends waiting to see their loved ones. That was sad. So many young women with two or three young children clinging on to them, all so they could have 15 minutes to talk through the glass, on a phone, to their boyfriend/husband. What a hopeless future for these young kids.
Was in cuffs several times in my younger days, usually for alcohol related altercations. Once was followed the few miles home after being stopped by one the township PD sergeants I knew. I was pretty tuned up and he told me I was driving within the lines etc just about 15 below the speed limit. Told me if I made it home we were good, if I wrecked he would say he was following me cause he thought I was DUI. I made it home and he waited until I got in the house before pulling away.
Closest to jail was spending a night in the drunk tank while working in Charleston, WV after getting in a fight with some cracked out spook while walking back to the hotel from the bar. Rastus got a trip to the ER while I got taken to the tank.
Pendleton Oregon. About 1970. Got off the bus at midnight, at 12:03 they locked the teminal doors, and I was out on the street with my baggage. Bstards! - that trip was the last time I took a Greyhound anywhere!
Cold, and I wasn't really dressed for it. Started down the block hoping to find a place to stay nearby, and a couple cops pulled up and wanted to know what I was doing.
They offered me a cot at the station, as they had no other guests, and I took it. (I'm not sure the next step would have been voluntary.... )
They didn't even lock the door, and their coffee in the morning wasn't that bad either, and I was on the next bus to - I think - Spokane. Or wherever- I don't really remember, except that I was coming home to Alaska!
Pharmacist in Jackson Ms, bad area. Quite a few instances of fighting shoplifters, chasing them down, gunpoint, etc.
Last time. about 2003. about age 40. It was a Wednesday evening about 5pm. Very busy. Guy came in and stole about $400+ in merchandise. Customer told me. I grab my 357 and took off out the door. He was a block ahead of me. Jumped in the truck, and after red lights I caught up with him on the frontage road of hwy 80. I sped up, rolled down the window and locked the brakes up beside him. Scared him white. I jumped out, he took off running. I'm after him, but forgot the revolver on the seat. Twisted me knee, hurt like crap. He stopped in front of another business. I got close to him and demanded my stuff back and if he ran I'd hurt him bad because my knee was hurting. He took off again but ran between 2 parked cars that were pulled up tight to a brick wall. Nowhere to go. I casually walked up and told him to give the stuff back. He said "NO, what are you going to do anyway>?" My response, "I'm gonna break your face" But, I wanted him to swing first so I would have the right to hit him many times. So, I said some unkind things about him and his family.
He tried a very slow (think calendar time) roundhouse. I moved my head back to miss it and stepped forward with a strong right hand. He fell back on the wall and slid down. He was out, but I sat on his chest and beat him in the forehead until a guy I did not know came up behind me and called my name and said, "Stop, you're going to go to prison if you keep hitting him."
I came to my senses stood up. I looked to my left and 100 yds away were 3 similarly pigmented people to the perp. One was on a cell phone and they were yelling at me. I assumed the cops were on their way. I was a mile from the pharmacy, which made me a vigilante looking at a felony. I look to the right and the guy that stopped me that I did not know, but called me by name was nowhere in sight. He had just vanished.
The perp is waking up and looks up at me. I thought quickly and said, "Those people over there are calling the police, do you want to be here when they get here?" He said "no". And I said, "you better get out of here then."\ When he stood up he had a 2-3 inch gash on his forehead that squirted blood a foot or more each heartbeat. He took off running.
I went back to the store and call my chairman of deacons (at the 1st church I pastored) and said, "I may not make it to preach tonight". he asked "why?" I responded "because I am probably about to be arrested".
I told him the store. I called the pharmacy owner next. and waited for the police that never showed up. 1 hour drive to church. I felt like God whispered in my ear "If you continue responding in anger this way, you may just start a prison ministry from the inside." That was the last felonious assault I participated in.
Who was the guy that stopped me? i don't know. How long would I have kept hitting the guy if I wasn't stopped? I don't know, I was hitting him in blind anger. I've always had a temper when it came to thieves, etc. , but I called it "righteous anger".
Never been, but I am planning on going to jail or possibly the state pen. Lots of noise in California about putting either a flat tax or water meter on domestic and household water wells. Remsen has offered to represent me, I haven't sent him a retainer yet, but he is still in the California Bar. I am not making threats, but we shall see what transpires, I feel strongly about domestic water, basic human needs.
First time I remember was the old Jail, had to go to the sheriff's office to get a pistol permit. It was an old brick building, the office was nice in an old industrial way.
Then they moved into the new jail. First time I tried to open the door, it didn't. Just gave a little tug, didnt move. Tried again with a good solid pull. Heavy SOB. It shut as I walked in, saw the bars, barred auto-lock doors..... Was darn glad to leave.
Later, visited a family member there over 3 months.
Know numerous people who have done stints there and the state pen. To a man they tell me they would rather get a 30 month sentence than a 15.
Over 24 months is state pen, and it's a much better experience. Library, education experiences, gym, rec-yard, jobs..... Local jail is 2-3/cell, open doors with 12-20 guys in a big room, one tv. Feeding time is the only thing different.

I've seen--and experienced--tons of head wounds, and they tend to bleed a lot. I've never seen any that squirted blood the way you describe. Arterial bleeds, absolutely, but gashes in the head? Nah, not even once, even where exposed skulls were involved.
As to the OQ, unfortunately, yes. In more than one country. On more occasions that I have fingers on a hand. Or a hand and a half, maybe. It's been more than 25 years since my last brief stay at a crowbar hotel of any sort, but I've spent some time behind bars and know I don't like it. Mostly for brawling/violent physical confrontations and almost always involved alcohol (behold, that may be a CLUE!) and about half in response to slurs from Boston townies that needed a lesson in manners.
I recall one fine summer evening in the late 80s sitting in a bullpen in Boston's Area B with a bunch of X-Men (Latino gangsters) and a total of maybe a dozen other shytbirds in the late 80s. A memorable one, that. The old homeless disgusto drunk squatting and evacuating his bowels in the corner was a nice touch. And yes, before he had a chance to finish two of the gangsters kicked and stomped his face in for him, leaving him unconscious in his own filth. Jail/prison etiquette is a thing, y'know. 'Thoust mustn't [bleep] in thine neighbor's house' or something like that...
Another scumbag was actually booting up what I assume was H in that cell as well. What the? Good job on the body search, BPD! Getting taken out the next morning to transport in the Black Maria to see The Man cuffed with six others at a whack was also fun. Arms intertwined and cuffed like a barrel o' dumb monkeys. That particular incident happened as a result of guilt by association. I and two of my then so-called friends were at a bar called Gerlando's in Boston's Allston and a dude walked up and told us quite clearly that all were going to die that night. He had friends with him.
Good to their word, they were waiting outside for us at closing time. I ended up stabbing one with a borrowed knife and fracturing the orbital and cheek bone and opening up in the process several very deep gashes on another's head and face with that size XL lock blade handle. Originally was charged one count of AM and one for ABDW, but downgraded to two counts of ABDW. It was purely self-defense, and I'm glad to say that the DA eventually learned enough facts, including lengthy records of violence of the 'victims' to understand I wasn't the real bad guy. Just another stupid participant. I found out later that Rolando had indeed ripped these guys off for an octavo. He skipped bail along with the other dude who RAN, and left me facing trial. I eventually pleaded out. With only me to face the word of three others, several witnesses who saw me going to work on those fuggers, with my cohorts on the lam, I didn't like my odds.
That fun night out at the bar with neat 'friends' cost me about $6K in 'victim' medical bills/restitution, 250 hours of community service and three years of supervised probation. I think I was 19 at the time and that was my last fairly serious run-in with Johnny Law. Sometimes it takes a bit for me to catch on.
Saw the judge the next morning and I'll never forget what he said. "Mr. Stapleton, you're 27 years old, drive a truck for UPS right? , you have never been in any trouble and have never even had as much as a speeding ticket."
"Would that be correct?"
To which I replied "that is correct".
He said "I don't feel like you belong in jail, get outta here and in 2 weeks we will get this sorted out."
Came back in 2 weeks and he threw it out and sent me on my way.
Saw the judge the next morning and I'll never forget what he said. "Mr. Stapleton, you're 27 years old, drive a truck for UPS right? , you have never been in any trouble and have never even had as much as a speeding ticket."

Had a coworker several years ago that got arrested when he was 22YO. His mother refused to bail him out and he spent 30 days in jail. He told me sat on his bunk and did awhole lot of thinking and realized that he nobody to blame but himself for the situation that he was in. Said it was the best thing his mom ever did for him by leaving him in there.

Don't know and didn't care. I can tell you however in my 10 year career as a driver I only ever had one Late Next Day Air. And by late i mean it was due at 12:00 and I didn't make it there until 12:05. Still got a warning letter for it.

People with the typical outsider's idea of what New York is like would be flabbergasted to see the part of New York we're from.
Way to many don't even know there is actually a large portion of the state that's not a city.
When I moved to eastern Washington in 1981 I was shocked by how many there had no idea that New York was a state and not just a city.
The North Country was a great place to grow up. We were on a dairy farm surrounded by woods and other dairy farms. It really was kind of remote back then. Some of the streams I trapped went through some old forests that I doubt had seen a human foot print in over fifty years. Maybe longer.
My grandfather owned a farm near Heuvelton that had one of the most phenomenal duck marshes in the county. And I was the only one hunting it.
Pharmacist in Jackson Ms, bad area. Quite a few instances of fighting shoplifters, chasing them down, gunpoint, etc.
Last time. about 2003. about age 40. It was a Wednesday evening about 5pm. Very busy. Guy came in and stole about $400+ in merchandise. Customer told me. I grab my 357 and took off out the door. He was a block ahead of me. Jumped in the truck, and after red lights I caught up with him on the frontage road of hwy 80. I sped up, rolled down the window and locked the brakes up beside him. Scared him white. I jumped out, he took off running. I'm after him, but forgot the revolver on the seat. Twisted me knee, hurt like crap. He stopped in front of another business. I got close to him and demanded my stuff back and if he ran I'd hurt him bad because my knee was hurting. He took off again but ran between 2 parked cars that were pulled up tight to a brick wall. Nowhere to go. I casually walked up and told him to give the stuff back. He said "NO, what are you going to do anyway>?" My response, "I'm gonna break your face" But, I wanted him to swing first so I would have the right to hit him many times. So, I said some unkind things about him and his family.
He tried a very slow (think calendar time) roundhouse. I moved my head back to miss it and stepped forward with a strong right hand. He fell back on the wall and slid down. He was out, but I sat on his chest and beat him in the forehead until a guy I did not know came up behind me and called my name and said, "Stop, you're going to go to prison if you keep hitting him."
I came to my senses stood up. I looked to my left and 100 yds away were 3 similarly pigmented people to the perp. One was on a cell phone and they were yelling at me. I assumed the cops were on their way. I was a mile from the pharmacy, which made me a vigilante looking at a felony. I look to the right and the guy that stopped me that I did not know, but called me by name was nowhere in sight. He had just vanished.
The perp is waking up and looks up at me. I thought quickly and said, "Those people over there are calling the police, do you want to be here when they get here?" He said "no". And I said, "you better get out of here then."\ When he stood up he had a 2-3 inch gash on his forehead that squirted blood a foot or more each heartbeat. He took off running.
I went back to the store and call my chairman of deacons (at the 1st church I pastored) and said, "I may not make it to preach tonight". he asked "why?" I responded "because I am probably about to be arrested".
I told him the store. I called the pharmacy owner next. and waited for the police that never showed up. 1 hour drive to church. I felt like God whispered in my ear "If you continue responding in anger this way, you may just start a prison ministry from the inside." That was the last felonious assault I participated in.
Who was the guy that stopped me? i don't know. How long would I have kept hitting the guy if I wasn't stopped? I don't know, I was hitting him in blind anger. I've always had a temper when it came to thieves, etc. , but I called it "righteous anger".
My grandfather spent several years in the state pen for stabbing a guy in a card game. My dad told me that the guy grampa stabbed would never have died if he had gotten proper medical treatment.

My Dad commented that if I ever went to jail, he would never bail me out. He also told me that if I ever did anything to warrant jail time, a jail cell would be a picnic compared to what he would do to me when I got out. I listened.

I spent a night in the county lockup about 2 months after I moved out of my folks’ place and went to trade school.
DUI, Minor in possession of alcohol, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor.
Dad’s rule was have fun as long as nobody goes to jail, no drugs, and nobody get pregnant. Any of these rules are broken you’re on your own. So I knew better than to make that late night phone call and called my roommate instead. He took up a collection and came and sprung me the next morning after my 12 hours was up.
When I called the old man the next morning and told him what I’d done he paused and then said, “ I figured this would happen, get it taken care of and get your [bleep] together, I hope you learn something from this”.
I did as he advised although it cost me a lot of money, time, and embarrassment. I haven’t been back since and think it was probably one of my more constructive learning experiences in the grand scheme of things.
I was. Years ago. In a GESTAPO jail with a guided tour. At that time the building was occupied by the local police. They showed us the cells in the basement. Afterwards we had some bad feelings.
Been arrested a couple times. Got cuffed and stuffed into a cop car once.
Got to the station. Uncuffed me. Led me and my girlfriend who was also arrested into a room and sat us down to process us.
He wrote out the citation. Asked me if I could pay the bond or spend the...
I never let him finish. I asked if they took checks. When he said yes, I wrote 2 checks immediately. $100 per. I probably was lucky to have $50-60 in my account. Wrote a couple hot checks to avoid the night. Thought I would figure it out later. Was a Friday or Saturday night 275 miles from home. Knew I had a couple days to sort it out when I got home. And I did.
As far as I know the only time I was in a jail was when I was getting fingerprinted for CCP. That was years ago, now fingerprinting is electronic and the ladies in the front office do the fingerprinting. That first time making that walk to the jail with a deputy was kind of weird.

Did quite a few pickups and deliveries to prison farms in both WY and CO, but never have seen the inside of a jail or prison. I’m good with that. Never arrested, only “minor” run ins with the law, and only one motorcycle confiscated by a judge with no sense of humor… but that was long, long ago in a country far, far away……
I joined the Navy in 88 and probably made it to VA Beach around late 89 or early 90. It didn't take much for a Sailor to get arrested within the confines of VA Beach. I was once arrested for walking from one bar to the next one less than 50 yds away. Drunk in public. No breathalyzer or sobriety test. Just cuffed and carted off to jail. I was wondering what egregious error I could have made walking 50yds after 2 beers.
Cops would stand in the middle of the strip flagging down any vehicle that had base stickers on them and scour the car and occupants looking for an offense. By my 3rd arrest, my command and myself decided that hanging out at the beach was a bad idea. I left this area and swore I would never come back but I failed to realize that my job only had 2 duty stations, Little Creek and Coronado. I have been here since 99 and still avoid Va Beach like the plague. I try to keep my ass in Chesapeake and only go into VA Beach for emergencies.
Once I was "accepted" at my command, we just picked someones house and piled up there and only went out for "training" at The Ships Wheel occasionally. To be honest, I still despise this area and can't wait to move to WVA or PA this fall.
3 friends and I did do a 2 week stint in a Mexican prison once but not sure if that counts. Apparently they don't like gringos burning down whorehouses down there.

Does it matter when the city rules the state?
It’s still a beautiful place to be with an abundance of fishing, hunting, and other outdoor recreational opportunities. There aren’t many employment opportunities. If you can live with the economy, the taxes, and the liberal laws, you can have a good life. We couldn’t, so we left. I really miss it, but I love SC. My wife would never set foot in NY again, if it weren’t for her parents.
