Do I want to "Upgrade?
Posted By: KillerBee Re: Windows 11? - 11/18/22
YES, I did an I am happy with it, way better than 8 or 10 and you can upgrade for free. It took me 10 hours to complete.

Ten hours to complete??!!
Posted By: KillerBee Re: Windows 11? - 11/18/22
It took that long for me.

What I did is I bought a new computer on sale which had Windows 10, because I found out that I could upgrade to 11 for free. Saved 50% buy not buying a Windows 11 computer and doing the upgrade myself at no cost.

I have been using Windows since 2007, Windows 11 is by far the best version they have put out to date, IMO.

Cheers

Option 1 don’t upgrade, win 10 goes dead in 2025 you keep using it offline for safety.
Option 2 upgrade and compute away.

Personally I am opting for 1. I have a very nice iPad that I like a hell of a lot better. Also tried Win11 and found absolutely nothing I liked. The only way I would go Win11 is if they don’t issue a perpetual license for 10 and it goes dead. Even then I have better options.

People still using windows is shocking to me.

I haven't installed Windows 11 yet, but did a search on reviews ("professional") recently and bottom line is Windows 11 gets an overwhelming two thumbs up. I was a bit surprised at that, because usually a Windows O/S release gets trashed initially, then people sober up (Vista the exception). Not this time. Windows 11 was greeted warmly out of the gate.

MS released the first "annual" update September 20, version 22H2, which I would expect fixes any significant problems. So ya, I would go for it.

https://support.microsoft.com/en-us...ory-ec4229c3-9c5f-4e75-9d6d-9025ab70fcce

You want to make sure any necessary drivers are available for existing peripherals (printers) so you aren't surprised you have to buy a new device. Which you can do, just should know about it going in.

Personally, I would do a "clean install", but that's your call.

Thats an excellent point SupFoo!

They took 11 back to the earlier versions of Printer Compatibility Drivers.

When I upgraded to Windows to 8 my Cannon Image Class 4450 became inoperable! With 11 it works perfectly and was that ever a huge pain in the ---! And is one of the reasons why I went for 11.

I did the install from a brand new 10 version computer. If I owned a 10 I would take it back to factory then install 11 from there.

Cheers ~

I've been sick of Windows for far too long. The next computer is getting Linux. I'm tired of all the bullshiit spyware, data tracking, and garbage programs that come with any MS or iProduct.

Linux Mint. Thank Rocky when you can.

Window 11 checked my computer and the CPU, memory, and video card were not upgradeable to Windows 11. Some day maybe I will buy a new computer.

Not surprised at all. New laptops running 11 start @239.00 😳

If Rocky sees this he will be well complimented. I put Mint on a removable drive and ran it on a newer machine and had no issues as before. Seems to be a good OS with my limited experience with it. But I refuse to bow to the Linux god just yet. 😁

What are the issues with Linux you refer to?

It's not their fault SupFoo, tech heads have no clue about anything really.

They fail to realize that 99% of people that own a home computer, just want to turn it on and have it work like turning on a TV, without getting into Minutia.

If someone wants to keep feeding Bill Gates by running Windows, have at it, along with all the forced updates.

Run a Linux OS and you are the one in control, they work every day. And I handload for everything I shoot, I'm in control of what I shoot.
Posted By: KillerBee Re: Windows 11? - 11/19/22
WayneShaw, you missed my point,

99% of people using computers out there do no know what Linux is or for that matter what CakePhp, PHP, MySQL, Centos etc, etc, etc...........

As I mentioned earlier, they just want to turn on their computer and have it working for them. Anyway that's just my take.

Cheers ~

I have sent several laptops to people with Linux installed. I made a poor choice of Linux OS in the one I sent to Wabi. I can understand why he didn't like it. That was my fault, not Linux's. If I had it back, I'd rectify that.

Dan has one, also. Made a much better choice of OS for his - but the laptop is old and has several problems.

But both of them were ready to turn on and use.Dan can give you his own take on Linux Mint.

Some guys want to be in control of their own lives, and some want to be told what to do, where to go, and why. I get it. Let's both not pretend though that your chosen lack of control is a "feature," when we both know it's a "bug."

You left out UNIX which Mac OSX and iOS is based on and certified as such. Linux is too.

Bugs, malware, ransomware happen to the best of systems HuntnShoot.

I dare say that I know more about computing then most, since I have been involved in the industry since 1984.

Again, most people do not have the knowledge, time or interest to build their own Linux system. That is and was my only point.

Cheers ~

Nothing could be farther from the truth IMO. I'm no expert in operating systems, like most I learned on a Windows system, and they kept changing and changing and are still changing it. I installed Ubuntu on an old laptop, to me Ubuntu is not the most user friendly, but I got by. A few glitches we worked out by advice from forums, and it was stable from there. I then got a used Macbook, another learning curve, but doable. I would rate a Mac better than Windows, but still they have their own quirks. Loaded Mint 19.3 on a new/refurbished laptop and it has been great. Very few issues, very fast, programs are readily available, and it does everything I need, every day. Updates are left up to me. The term "open source" means a lot with Linux. People all over the world use these systems and help is readily available, without having to call GEEK SQUAD.

This might be ol’ Wabi’s best solution.

Ten hours to install is ridiculous.

Posted By: RockyRaab Re: Windows 11? - 11/20/22
It's comical that people shy away from Linux because they don't want to install and learn a new operating system. So they install and learn a new Windows operating system.

If you have to use Windows or if you genuinely like Windows, go ahead. But if you are sick of being manipulated, bled dry by software subscriptions, and plagued by malware, there is an alternative.

You do not have to build your own Linux system. You download the OS of your choice, make it into a bootable USB stick, and then install it. Total: about an hour.
Posted By: blindshooter Re: Windows 11? - 11/20/22
I installed a $50 SSD and had XXXXX Linux distro running on one of my friends laptop in less than an hour.

All he needs is browser.

Screw Micro$$$oft.

My employer uses Dell Latitude laptop platform for everything. Been using Latitudes for 20 years with zero issues, replaced every 2-3 years by Company. I buy used Latitudes for personal use coming off lease every 2-4 years and sell mine (HD wiped & re-staged, of course) on Craigslist. I buy refurb desktops for my wife from NewEgg and, again, never a problem. Helluva lot cheaper than new. All future laptops & desktops will be SSD only, although I keep external HDD's for backup.

The most troublesome part of the process is figuring out how to change boot order on some machines.

A few extra minutes with your favorite search engine for the hard ones and you're good to go.

So far the Toshiba machines have been the worst. They make it hard to access boot order and change the process from one model to another.

I understand being forced to use Micro$$oft. I had to deal with it at work for decades. I'm retired now and don't need them for 99% of my uses. I still have to keep up with Window$ BS as my wife still has to use it for work.

A good portion of the world runs on Linux, you just don't see it. Lots of devices use some form of embedded Linux as OS. I don't know the % but a lot web servers run Linux.

Good on Mr. Rocky for helping others save some bucks. More for the rifle loony projects!
Posted By: Swifty52 Re: Windows 11? - 11/20/22
98% of all servers run Linux
If you have a WiFi router it’s run on Linux
Every super computer in the world runs Linux
NASA, FAA traffic control, and even the Electron Collider uses Linux
Why, it’s a FREE version of UNIX which was the first portable OS developed for communications by AT&T.
