1964 Plymouth Belvedere. I could have thrown a cat out through the floorboards on that thing but it had a KICK AZZ stereo system when I was done with it.
'56 Ford F-100. Shortly after getting my DL, I got off of the school bus one day to find my great-uncle Norman in the driveway standing next to his pickup. He tossed me the keys and said, "Give me a ride home in your truck."
He had just bought a new '75 F-100, same shade of green. When he passed in 1989, I bought that truck from his estate.
He was quite a man. Was a well known auctioneer in south Jersey. In his will, he left $300,000 to the Deborah Heart and Lung Center in Browns Mill, NJ.
57 Chevy, Belaire 2 door sedan. Didn't run & was told it was parked 18 months earlier with a slipping trans. He said many had tried to buy it but nobody had showed him any money. I showed up a week later with cash & the deal was done. $125. A magical time for a 16 yo gearhead.
The first vehicle I owned was a 58 Chevy Apache 283, 4 speed. Didn't keep it long, was offered way more than the $50 I paid for it and let it go. Bought a 70 Chevelle with the money from the 58 Apache The stock 307 didn't last long. Put a 383 stroker in it and had to much fun
49 1/2 Ford F1 flathead V8 three speed in the floor. I was 13 Dad dropped me off where it was and I worked on it cleaned the gas tank (had hay in it) out got the brake’s pumped up and put a sorta fresh battery in it (6 volt positive ground). Liberal doses of Mystery Marvel oil in the right places and fresh gas fired it up but the clutch was stuck. Dad showed up and we dragged it down a dirt road and freed it up. Topped the master cylinder off and Dad told me to take the back road home (about 50 miles) as he had to go to another job. I restored that truck and sold it 5 years later.
59' GMC PU 389, 4 spd hydramatic, R-N-1-4, 1-3, 1-2 or so, no park so had to be smart where I parked it and the E brake always worked. It had trouble wearing rear tires for some reason til I got tired of buying them or walking.
70 Nova SS. Fire Engine Red with black vinyl top. 350 4 bolt main with Holly 650. 4 speed Hurst Competition Plus with 3.73 rear end gear. Gauges were factory on the console with the factory tachometer on the dash. It was a heck of a ride!
1950 Ford Custom Flathead V8 2 door. Shaved hood, baby moons, Sex lights under dash, pom poms and maroon in color. That is the way I bought it for $225.00 dollars. I put 760 15s on the rear. It would burn rubber in first and bark in second. I think that I was 16 when I bought it.
1964 Rambler Station Wagon with plastic “wood” on the sides. Yes, it was a beast. For $800, it was worth every penny! Drove it for 3 years and sold it for $950.
1977 Olds 98. Leather seats, power everything, 403/400. Nice ride and fast. outran the local pd fairly often, they had Plymouth Volares with the slant six. Getting away was a given.
1971 Toyota Celica ST. 1.9 L, 109 HP, 4 speed manual, redlined at 6300 RPM which was 30 mph in first, 60 mph in second, 90 mph in third, and theoretically 120 in fourth. I doubt it had the hp to actually push it to 120. I never had the nerve to take it over 100.
I drove it into the ground, and replaced it with a 74 Buick Le Sabre w/ a 350. But within a year, I had another Celica in the driveway. Just more fun than a whole sack full of monkeys.
1965 2 door Chevrolet Biscayne, 6 cyl., 3 speed on the column, green, AM radio, added 8 track tape player and FM converter, no A/C. I put on a little bigger tires, added chrome beauty rings to the rims and moon hub caps, later put on a Cherry Bomb muffler.
I learned to drive in my father's 67 Mustang 289 with 3 on the floor. Then I started borrowing my mother's 56 Chev bel air 6 banger. Then got my own 58 Chev 283 automatic. Then I got a 60 MGA Then I got a 67 sunbeam alpine Then I got a 67 Chev Biscayne Then I got a 73 Triumph GT6 Then I got an 82 Saab 903 Then I got an 84 Honda CRX THen I got an 89 Saab 903 Then I got a 95 Saab Then I got a 2000 Dodge Intrepid Then I got a 2004 Honda Element THen I got a 2016 Ford F150 Lariat Then I got a 2004 BMW mini Cooper Now my wife drives me around in her honda CRV
I had a 1957 Chevrolet pickup with three on the tree and a floor starter. I bought it in 1976 in Norman, Oklahoma when I was 15 years old.
Mine had the 3 on the tree standard transmission with the 6 cylinder engine, too. Had the Floor starter button / pedal, also.
I bought it from a neighboring farmer. I think I payed him $250 bucks. It had been setting out behind their barn for several years. The transmission was locked up so I had to go to the local wrecking yard and buy another for $25 bucks. Layed under it for a couple of hours in the field putting in the new transmission and I was good to go. That was in 1975. I was 15 also. 😬
first road going car... 71 Buick Riviera, 455 4brl, Metallic Red, beige vinyl top, bucket seats with floor shift console... bro bought it as a repo from the insurance salvage pool when i was 15 in 78... worked my ass off to get it paid for and pimped before i got my license... before that, at 11or12, bro gifted me a half dozen 62-64 Chevy II Nova's... at 13/14 i got the best one (a 63 2dr HT) running and drove it around the salvage yard...
It was a surplus 1963 Plymouth station wagon from the Soil and Water Conservation District. It was an olive drab, survey car with not one option. Didn't even have an AM radio or back seat. It had a slant six engine that was fairly reliable, but the three on the column was so worn it was a bugger to drive and not get hung up. My twin brother and I learned a lot about keeping a car going with that piece of junk.
It had been sitting idle for a few years when we got it. First thing was to do a valve job to get it running again. Had been wrecked twice - lots of Bondo on that car. Paid $250 for the car.
I quickly learned why Dad got that car for me - The back seat was waaaay to small to do anything with a girl.
Mine was a 1966 ford mustang coup with a 289 and a 3 speed manual.
Ditto. Mine was red, and I will never forget those tail lights. Nor the 8-track tape player. It cost $600, used car lot, in 1973 and I made payments of $50 per month on it, when gasoline was about 29 cents per gallon. I was a working man of 18 y.o. after I dropped out of West Point, after Nixon, who appointed me, announced that he was dropping out of Vietnam. Word came down in Nov. 1972, but dang didn't they make a mess of it for 2-1/2 years more. Sort of Bidenesque that was.
First car was a faded black '49 Ford 4-dr sedan that had been very lightly side-swiped down the passenger side. Paid $65 for it. Had an excellent flathead V-8 and 3-speed column shift. Soon I found a '51 2-door Victoria pillarless coupe for sale in a gas station. That had a perfect body and interior, but the engine and trans were shot. Bought that for $150 and swapped in the engine and trans from the '49.
1967 Ford Fairlane GT. 390 big block and a C6. 500.00. Bought it when I was 15 years old. Drove it up and down the drive way for a while and drove it to Alabama before I had my license.
1972 Monte Carlo with a 402 cid Big Block. When I was 15, The Old Man give me a choice between 4 cars that would need about the same amount of work to put on the road. When I saw those great big valve covers under the hood of that Monte Carlo, it was an easy choice!😎 Worked on that car for a year before I could drive it. Dad was a little worried about me having that big hammer of a motor. But I took great pride in that car, and I only Drag Raced it a little ! She was more my baby than hot rod, but it was nice having both in the same vehicle! Reon
I inherited my Grandfather's '67 Buick Electra 225.
I drove it for the summer after I graduated high school and the gave it to my dad to sell when I went off to college. I didn't want to be everybody's taxi, and that was pretty much what I'd become in the short time I'd had the vehicle.
A 65 Impala sport sedan, 283, 2 speed auto. I bought it for $1 from a local insurance agent and boy scout leader who wanted to help out someone who didn't have a car or the funds to buy one. I did some body work and my uncle sprayed it for me. Frame was sketchy, but it got me most of the way through college.i have it's cousin in the garage today - a 65 4-door hardtop.
Dad had a bit of a collection of spare vehicles for me and my brother to drive.
Primary for me - 88 Chevy P/U - 2wd, 4.3 v6, Stick with bench seat. Only options I think it had were 2 tone paint, cab market lights and FM radio Back ups - 89 Wrangler (all the tops, hard/soft/bimini and doors to match each), 85 Buick Grand Parisienne
First one I paid for with my own savings/money - 1984 Ford F150. 4x4 300i6, 4 speed that had that uber granny 1st. Vinyl everything, AM radio. Was the CHEAPEST F150 one could get in 84 that still had 4x4. 80k miles on it, paid 3k for it. Got 4.5-6 mpg.
Wow - stirs some memories. 1939 Pontiac 4door sedan, straight 8 with 3 speed shifter on the floor. 17 inch wheels were helpful on Vermont's back roads hadn't been plowed yet.Could of held a dance between the front and back seats. Bought it 1959 for $80 with 90,000mi, sold it 1961 2000mi for $125. Probably only car I ever made money on.
I trashed the engine and burnt the rear tires off of it. Had to put a junk yard engine in it and some used rear tires on it. It started costing my old man money, so he made me sell it. Bought a '70 Camaro RS with a 307 and an automatic for $700.00. I took better care of it until I wrecked it. Boys will be boys.
In my Senior Year three of us chipped in $25.00 each and ought a 37 Chevy pickup. We had a ball in until we graduated in 64.
My first car of my own was a 1958 Bel Air with a 348 cu in. that was fast when it finally got up to speed. ! Paid $150.00 for it. Folks sold it when I entered the AF in 1967.
73 Galaxie 500 351w put 225000 miles on it rebuilt it and had almost 400k on it when hurricane Floyd floated it down the river , it was my hunting, fishing and everything else ride. Got my 1st speeding ticket in ,got laid the 1st time in it ,those big bench seats had plenty of room for doing the wild thing. Could pile it up with all I needed for most anything and put the canoe on the rack on top
1966 Fairlane 500 couple, candy apple red - literally a little old lady (aka my Grandma) drove it to church every Sunday and that's about it. I bought it in 1974 with 22000 miles on it; 289 automatic Sadly, sold it when I entered college in 1976 but I paid for a year's tuition, books and fees Sure wish I still had it
First licensed in '72.....fall of '75 my dad let me take his '66 chevy impala back to college. When i finished college dad titled a '75 caprice classic to me....i traded that in on a new '82 honda accord 4dr manual to begin my first car payment experience.......dam gud car.....75 horsepower.
At 15 I got a hagged out 1965 Ford Ranchero so I could drive to school and work. It had a 260 V-8 automatic with power steering and a factory driver's side spotlight/mirror combination that did not work. It was faded tan and rusted out fender wells with rotted floorboards you could throw a cat through. It had almost 200,000 miles on it. It had been an old drunk my dad worked with fishing vehicle he used to pull a small boat. I paid $250.00 for it, drove it two years, blew the motor and sold it for $300.00 to guy who rebuilt it. I learned a lot about keeping a rolling wreck running during those early years.
71 Pinto that I traded a calf for. Canary yellow and had been painted blue .It looked like hell, but would run for a week on a peach can full of whatever gas I could find.
Dad bought me a cam, oil pump, double roller chain and Performer intake for my birthday and we did the swap one weekend. Rebuilt the Q-Jet at the same time.
Ran pretty stout. That's one I would like to have back for sure.
My current project car is a tribute to my father- - - -a replica of the 34 Ford 3 window coupe he ran on the dirt tracks of Tennessee, Kentucky, and Alabama in the early 1950s. The frame and running gear will be original, with a fiberglass body a friend in Texas is making for me. No fenders, "wide 5" wheels, flathead Ford V8 engine, a single bucket seat, B-17 seat belt, and a roll cage. The hauler is a 51 GMC 3 ton with a 12 foot flat bed, a 270 6 cylinder engine, 2 speed rear axle, and a 3 speed Brownie auxiliary transmission. I'll be doing some exhibition laps at a few of the remaining dirt tracks in the area once it's complete.
First car was a 1967 Mustang, V6, 3 speed manual. Bought it from my dad my junior year in high school 1975. First truck was a 1979 Ford, 4x4, 351 V8, 4 speed manual, standard cab, short box. Bought that truck brand new whilst in the service for the bargain price of $6,700.
1964 Chevelle Malibu with a 6 and an automatic. You could stand on either side of the engine within the compartment, you could haul the contents of a small house in the trunk, you didn't need a key to start it as long as you didn't lock the ignition with a key, I loved that car.
First pickup 1948 Ford f-2 4 speed 85 hp flat head V-8 $50 Thomson's junk yard Took a little work but it served me well till I got out of High School.
First Car 1948 Buick Road Master, Straight 8 with a 3 speed Dya-Flow on the tree, like driving a big boat, bought it from a used car dealer $75.00 Bucks, ran great on drip gas and shale oil. Rio7
1978 Camaro Berlinetta with a 350 and a 4 speed. Dark metallic green with gold flake and a tan interior. Got lots of tickets and lots of tail in that car. Oh, to be young again!
1963 Ford Galaxy 500. Navy blue. 352 V8 with only a two barrel, but it would go! Paid $100 for it in 1970 with about 50k on it. Ran it for a year and a half and sold it for $65.
1973 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme with the enviable Old Rocket 350! Ha!
My girlfriend in HS had the 1972 version of that one. Great old car. Her’s was blue with the white leather seats.
Nice! I liked the short body 67-72 version. They were sexy cars. They lengthened the body starting in 73'. Not nearly as sporty or sexy as the earlier years.
oh, and just one more thing... are you related to Columbo?...
almost ,

Columbo's car is a Peugeot model 403 Grande Luxe Cabriolet (convertible), manufactured in Sochaux, France, by "SA Des Automobiles Peugeot". Different sources identify it as a 1959 or a 1960 -- probably there is one of each, including the original and the stand-in cars.
2 year old 69 Plymouth Roadrunner 383-335 hp. $900 w/33000 miles on it, bought it from a lady that was a customer at the drive-thru store I worked at in HS. Still playing with and racing Mopars 50+ years later

Me too, Not quite 50 years but 30. Have a 69 R/T SE Charger.
A lot of you guys had really cool first cars. Me, not so much. A 1975 Chevy Impala 4 door 350 with a 2 barrel. If you flipped the air cleaner lid, it sounded cool. The rear seat floorboards were rusted out, so the bombardier sat in the back seat and dropped the m-80’s while the navigator lit them.
82 Buick Skylark with a 4-speed...it died a horrible engine failure death about a month after I bought it from a guy my dad worked with back then.
I promptly purchased a 71 Mustang with a 302 which I drove until the end of my freshman year in college. I got in a lot of trouble with that car. But back then $2000 bucks bought a lot of fun. After I bought it I found it had likely been in at least a couple accidents. Bondo all over the rear quarters. So I dug into it and started fixing it up. In the end, I ran out time and patience and my dad bought it from me for my brother, had the exterior professionally restored and it stayed in the family a couple more years.
69 Firebird with an OHC 6 and Powerglide. Later upgraded with a built 350 SBC.
Sold it to my brother to fund a 69 Corvette convertible. About ten years back, he sold the OHC motor and transmission to a collector for more than he paid me for the car.
1972 F-100 2WD automatic a yellowish green w/ the worst engine Ford ever made…the 360. It did run for years though getting 8-10 mpg and 500 mpq (of oil).
I learned to drive a '51 Mercury flathead v8, 3 on the tree. My first dedicated vehicle was a 1962 Chevrolet carryall/suburban with ?16" split rim wheels, 3 speed manual transmission and ?261 CI inline 6. Sturdy, lots of ground clearance, spacious rear seat and lots of cargo room. A convenient vehicle for a dorm dwelling college student.
My first new vehicle was a '72 VW van which required front disc pads every 10k miles and routine valve adjustments. It was succeeded by a '69 Ford panel van with an inline 6, 3 speed manual transmission, and commercial plates when I started grad school. I found the commercial plates to be a real asset allowing me to park in loading zones and other restricted spots when scooting over to class from work.
69 Ford 250 xlt Ranger camper special. Had to take the camper off to take my girl to the prom. Wanted to make a better impression to her parental units while picking her up 😎
You guys are killing me, 1971, got a girl pregnant, (my future ex) my dad said “drop your motorcycle off at the dealer and I’ll make up the difference on a car for you”. The whole time hinting what he was looking at; Almost new, Showroom condition, Pristine, etc. He showed up at my job with a 1969 RAMBLER AMERICAN!!! 🤮🤮🤮 He was so proud he only paid $600!!!
My first car was a 1973 Dodge Dart Sport (the fastback-style), with a 340-4 automatic. It was Hemi Orange with black interior, Flowmaster pipes, headers, and all the rest. Also had a 1993 Ford pickup at the same time.
1972 dodge duster. 225 slant six, that would not die. My sister had a car load of girls in it and the leaf springs came right thru the trunk. 3 speed on the floor. Clutch got so bad I couldn’t make it out of a buddies driveway with a hairpin turn up a hill to get out. So I sold it to my sisters boyfriend for whatever he had in his wallet, which was 21 bucks. 10 minutes later he put a hockey puck thru the rear side window.
I wish, my first car was a Volkswagon bug I bought for $50. Drove it for two years. Next one was a 63 Impala Supersport I bought in 67 for $1100. Drove it like a madman for five years.
67 Ford XL fastback, 390, C-6 auto trans. (ask me how i know) bucket seats, green with a black vinal top. I beat that poor car to death and had way to much fun in it until one night, to much vodka and orange pop ended it's time. Sure wish i had that car back now.
