He had looked rough for a while.

Seemed like a good dude and had some good tunes.

“It’s a little too late” was probably my personal favorite, well, that and “I’ll never smoke weed with Willie again”.

RIP Toby. Way too young……

But his music is low brow garbage. He was smart enough to capitalize on dumb people's love of war and fake Patriotism

Too bad. He had a bunch of good ones. “How do you like me now”, “as good as I once was” and “Beer for my horses” were all good.

Slavyanka would get pissed when I’d play “God love her” - “she was baptized in dirty water”.

Some people don't seem to understand that cancer doesn't care how "healthy" one lives their life. Many alcoholics live to a ripe old age, same as smokers...and some of the healthiest eating people on earth die young of cancer...hell even many young people that have never drank or smoked in their lives die of cancer...

Toby Keith came through Taji Iraq with Ted Nugent in 2004 - they were coming into Iraq straight out of Afghanistan and had been traveling 16-20 hours at that point with Baghdad as the final destination for that night.

They landed late, started the show late - and then played an extra hour or more closer to two hours - "just because" they wanted to. We were running the flight to Baghdad for them, so holding the helos wasn't a problem.

I learned a couple things that night -

1. Regardless of the politics - both went above and beyond to ensure that they were there to break up what was a long tour with a personal connection to the troops.

2. We had no idea how may guitars were deployed with our soldiers - they sat and signed probably 120-150 instruments after the show - and didn't quit until the last one was done.

I got escort them out to the flight line and to the pad for lift-off, we were about 10 minutes late notifying the UH-60 crews, and VBC in Baghdad was having issues with indirect fires - so everything went into "on hold" phase at the pad.

Both entertainers were smoked - they'd just added another 4 hours or more onto the 20 they'd already been through, and still had to get into VBC for the night. We're standing at midnight-30 in 85 degree heat, battel rattle, and listening to thumps in Baghdad from the rockets.

Toby still made a point to walk to every solider on the pad and shake their hand and tell them that they were doing good and were great Americans. You could feel the fatigue coming off him in waves, but he never once acted like "THE GUY" that had pretty much just won every award possible in Nashville 2-3 weeks prior. It was a special night many, and very personal look at an entertainer that went further than he had to, when he didn't have to.

Ted Nugent did the same - he only wanted a bottle of water to refill his canteen before the flight, and made sure that he made the rounds as well. Both of them could have cut the visit much shorter and stayed closer to the schedule - but they didn't. They stayed there for the troops and made it work.

My picture of Toby will be standing there in the dim light our flashlights, hands in his pockets, that crushed cowboy hat on his head, rocking the OTV vest, and so tired he can only mumble by the time the aircraft arrived at the pad.

I don't think he cared much for meeting the brass - but he'd make every effort possible to ensure a young troop in any uniform had a chance to meet him, and to tell that troop that he supported them.

YMMV

They landed late, started the show late - and then played an extra hour or more closer to two hours - "just because" they wanted to. We were running the flight to Baghdad for them, so holding the helos wasn't a problem.

I learned a couple things that night -

1. Regardless of the politics - both went above and beyond to ensure that they were there to break up what was a long tour with a personal connection to the troops.

2. We had no idea how may guitars were deployed with our soldiers - they sat and signed probably 120-150 instruments after the show - and didn't quit until the last one was done.

I got escort them out to the flight line and to the pad for lift-off, we were about 10 minutes late notifying the UH-60 crews, and VBC in Baghdad was having issues with indirect fires - so everything went on phase at the pad.

YMMV

This great story is the impression that I got from Toby. It is good to hear that he was everything we thought he was. Good to hear that Ted was a stand up guy as well. Hard to replace these good Americans!

RIP, good man and thanks for the entertainment.

He left the Democratic Party over a decade ago and was a registered independent. But who cares, he had a tough battle and died and last time I checked wasn’t a criminal. It’s ok to say a prayer for him no matter his political affiliation. “JH” is still an idiot, period end of story.

Toby, was a Okie first and foremost, loved his state and its people, OU fan to the end, real cowboy when young, football player, even simi pro, tough man, and most of all like most Okies, worked in oil patch as a rough neck, hardest work you can do. He was a NO bullshhhit kind of man, he did his career his way, hated corruption Nashville, couldn’t stand executives and brass, that’s why he was so highly thought of here in Oklahoma, he was just like all of us, married 40 years same woman, never heard of him being in trouble other than snatching someone up and shaking them a little, he could and would handle business. I take my hat off to a real Man, not a puss behind a keyboard like JH, I would love to meet you sometime, boy.

F cancer. Way too young. Not a huge fan, but I respect a guy who wears his partiotism on his sleeve and doesn't care who knows it. Plus he got those Dixie Chicks panites in a knot - never forget the dike singer with FUTK written on her shirt at some awards show. I bet he's still living in her head rent free. He also made me laugh now and again - take a listen below. Godspeed, TK.

The entertainment industry is historically left leaning. Not a big Jimmy Olsen scoop there.

So... in 2008, Toby wised up, left the demoRats behind, and became an Independent.

I say... Congratulations to him for wising up.. He wasn't the first, and there are thousands more still wising up every day. Watch some YouTube and you will get a feel for just how many.

And I personally do thank him much for his dedication to our peeps in the sandbox over the last 2 decades. I can't say I was a big Toby Keith fan, because I wasn't. Just not that into country. Nothing against Toby Keith.

So you say his music was simplistic. Ohhh-kaaay. Ever heard of a little band called Black Sabbath?

RIP, Toby Keith. A decent man gone too soon.

Morewood;
Good evening to you sir, I hope you all are having the winter you need and can live with down there and you're all well.

I too enjoyed his music over the years and also hopes he RIP.

When my good wife got home tonight, we were briefly chatting about the day and she'd heard a blurb on the radio news regarding how he'd made a lot of his wealth not only through singing but as a restauranteur, starting his own record label and real estate investments as well.

Not that money is everything for sure Morewood, but I also note he and his wife married in '85 and he fully adopted her daughter. They also had two kids together and if any of them are in the news very often I've missed it.

Anyways sir, being married to someone for nearly 40 years and having a hand at raising 3 seemingly productive replacements, well that's not nothing, as some BC rednecks such as myself might say.

All the best.

Dwayne

At this point, two things are abundantly clear.

1) TK was smart enough to recognize an unfilled niche, and was talented enough and had sense enough to fill it and make likely make some very good money off of it.
And
2) JH isn't smart enough to recognize a dry hole, thinks he has the talent to make something of it, and doesn't have the sense to know when to stop digging.

YMMV

AH64, same experience here. I saw a few singers come to Iraq, particularly the larger bases like Al-Asad. I appreciate them all. However, Toby Keith showed up one night at Camp Fallujah. Nobody comes to Fallujah. I didn't have time and honestly not that interested at the moment to go see him. If I remember correctly it was a small indoor meet and great or acoustics event because you were not having a concert here. Anyway, the next morning in the dark about 0530 I'm going to the dfac and I go in but hold the door open behind me for the next guy. Well [bleep] it's Toby Keith. By himself. I decided let the guy eat in peace. He said thanks Sir, I said no problem. He was behind me in line the whole time just never wanted to bother him for autographs or whatever.

Anyway whatever music you like, I respected him for that. God bless him and his family. Oh and [bleep] cancer!

Bingo!!! JH is the new asshat of the Campfire and he wins by a mile.

Agreed, and that's saying something.

Why am I not surprised....lol

Taylor Swift and her deranged cult is even worse than the low-brow Keith clan...and apparently we have him to blame!

I keep being MORE right......

I just call them like I see them, and you my friend are a classless fool, too stupid to realize what he’s saying. Keep digging, you’re doing great work today.

99.9% of the people here make a better burger than McDonald's - not for sale. "For Sale" isn't a metric I'd die on.

Great human being. Great patriot. BUT he did not sing country music.

"Keith was a registered Democrat until 2008, when he re-registered as an independent, telling the Chicago Tribune in 2016, "I was a Democrat my whole life."

This stuff really isn't difficult to find..lol all are excerpts from news articles that took me 10 seconds to find.

Hell, I grew up in a democRATic household. I identified as a democRAT up until around 2000. However, I quit voting democRAT in 1980. My folks identified as democRAT right up until they died in 2019 and the end of 2023. However, they voted for the Republicans from 1980s also.

Carter changed both my and my folks attitudes, but then that is also when the entire democRATic party started changing.
My folks weren't LBJ Johnson fans. They voted for Humphrey, only because they hated Nixon in 1968 and 72. They held their nose when they voted for Humphrey in 68.

If you were our age range, and were from the south, you grew up as a democrat. But as the party changed and embraced communism and socialism, life took a left turn. Today's Republicans are more like what Democrats use to be and no one is really like Republicans were like in the 1950s.

But Toby Keith was a patriot, like many folks from Oklahoma would be. Patriotism and Party affiliation are not necessarily, hand in hand with folks who are patriots.

Rest in Peace Toby. You won't be forgotten for quite a while.

Sad the Good Lord took you home so early in your life. But then Mr Handy makes a good point. Filtering a bunch of booze thru your stomach and liver, not forgetting some drugs also, the music crowd likes to do, takes a toll on a body, regardless if you are a patriot or not.

I don't even care that he was a democrat. But 90% of users here would s hit talk anyone else that supported democrats. Kind of ironic.

I really enjoy watching people swirl around the toilet bowl when they aren’t smart enough to walk away. You go Jackson, you are killing it. 👍
