Had an alligator when I was a kid, mean bastard. You may feel the need to pet your alligator, but he doesn't feel the need to be petted.

Not me but a girl I knew in high school had a pet skunk, de-scented. Skunks are lousy pets. They aren't friendly, their hair is too stiff for cuddly petting, the stink is never really gone, and with their huge digging claws, they scratch anyone and anything. They also have wicked teeth although this one never bit anyone that I know of.

Had an orphaned baby possum I tried to bottle feed but he succumbed to a respiratory ailment after 2 weeks. I had a garter snake till Mamma found it. Had a horned toad in the
Mississippi Delta. I found it in our front yard. We surmised it hitched a ride as my Dad was an independent trucker and did a lot of hauling in the Valley in Texas. I kept in a goldfish bowl and I think one of my 3 brothers aided in his escape. I fed it insects (grasshoppers and June bugs) and meal worms. Of course we had crawfish and tadpoles till they morphed into frogs. I enjoyed nature and made an arrangement of pine cones, lotus blossom pods, acorns, hickory nuts, walnuts, hedge apples and the like. In it was oak gall, milk weed pods, and what I thought was a butterfly larvae . Well it hatched out and I was badly mistaken. It was dozens of tiny transparent praying mantis. Our nature arrangement had to go after vacuuming up all that we could find. Tiny miniatures of the adults.

Had a black footed ferret named Louise for about 8 years. She was a funny mischievous animal that liked to raise he'll once in a while. She also liked to hide your stuff from you like your wallet or car keys.

She was litter box trained and had her scent glands remove so we'd leave her cage door open at times and she'd follow you around the house. She always wanted to watch what you were doing.

Had a monitor lizard for a spell when I lived on Guam. Kept the house clear of little lizards. Also had a Guam Rail, a species now extinct. It could run circles around Wile E. Coyote.

The middle son got a rabbit one Easter and named him “Eddie Rabbit” after the popular songwriter and singer - “Love the Rainy Nights”. A cousin had a male black and tan fife squirrel dog - called him “Barney Fife”! He was named appropriately, very nervous and high strung. Fidgetey.

I know an ol boy in east central Kansas that has mountain lions for pets. De-clawed and K-9's removed. IIRC he fed them dry cat food.

A friend of mine had a zebra and a giraffe for a while.

When I was abput 8 - 9 years old I had a pet pig that followed me around like a dog. It was great for a year or so but then I realized that if you plan on eating an animal don't have it as a pet.

Most of our chickens have food names like nugget, Kung pow, sweet and sour which are 2 different birds, or even one just named dinner. They all get food names with a few exceptions like Pecker, although a few of our democrats would consider that in line with the theme.

When I was in my late teens, I built an "escape proof" cage and would catch and keep rattlesnakes.
Great conversation starter.

After we got married, my wife brought a prairie dog home. let it run around the house for a little while til we found all the holes it had chewed in the carpet.

Dad had a tame raccoon and squirrel that he raised from babies.

When I was in the 6th grade, we hatched a mallard hen in an incubator. I was the first human she saw, so I became her "mommy". She would follow me around like a puppy.
Someone gave us a drake and we eventually ended up with a flock of 23.

Pet squirrel.

“Brutus”

I had a chameleon. Or my live in girlfriend at the time did. It was a good pet, never made noise or a mess. Collect a few bugs in the yard for it to eat, wicked fast and accurate tongue.Everything else moved super slow. Eyeballs going two directions. It would climb al over in the houseplants, took awhile to find it sometimes. Great camo, we had a black and white designs rug it would be black and white lines just like the rug move forward an inch and the color would change on its body to the color of the rug perfectly lined up. It layer about 30 eggs and died, while the girlfriend was on vacation. I don’t think she ever forgave me.

We had a couple of Ferrets when my kids were young. It technically belongs to my granddaughter, but she keeps a hedgehog here. Stepdad said she couldn't bring it home. Easiest pet ever to care for. We almost never see it. It sleeps all day and runs in the wheel all night. All we do is put food and water out for it. Our granddaughter cleans the cage when she visits.

She is also the only one who can pick it up without wearing leather gloves too.

Two years ago I found 2 turkey eggs while hunting. They weren't in a nest, just lying in the middle of a logging road. One had not fully formed, but I took the other to a friend who is a wildlife re-habitation expert. He placed the egg inside an incubator along with 6 mallard eggs. When they hatched, he released them near a pond on his property. About a week later a group of turkey showed up and the young turkey left with them.

We had a couple of coons at different times.
When I was 11, we had one named “Pete” who was like one of the family.
He loved riding motorcycles. I had an SL/70 Honda, and I’d put a sweatshirt on zippered 1/2 way up, thus making a pouch for him. He loved it.
Had a piece of rain spout with both ends sealed. We’d put water in there and some minnows or crawdads for him to fish for.
You didn’t want him around if you were trying to work under a car though. He had his nose in your business trying to see what you’re doing, or the little creep was carrying off your tools!

I currently have a bobcat named appropriately enough- Rowdy. He is a deer, chicken, and rabbit eatin' SOB. Great pet. Got a permit from the state for him.

Had a fox. Pretty but I don't recommend them. He used the litter box but- to put things onto perspective- they sell red fox pee as cover scent. When he used the box you had to change it RIGHT NOW! Talk about run you out of the house. I threw the damn thing out the basement door but he ran around to the front door and was waiting on my cell mate when whe went to walk the dog. She knew I was gonna kill it so she found some sucker in Ft. Lauderdale to take it.

My brothers had a litter of woodchucks after shooting the mother. They liked to hide/rest underneath the kitchen counter and were easily house-trained. They'd climb into the bathtub to do their business.

Had a couple buddies visit from out of town wanted to drive around looking for old cars left out to rot. We see something they were interested in we'd do a stop-n-knock. One place we come to an old fella opened the door, all black-faced and wrapped in a blanket. He invited the three of us in to talk about old cars and we soon figured out why he was so dark. He had a chair perched over a grate and he sat there and let the heat blow out on him, wrapped up with that blanket over his head. Must've been an oil burner. 20 years worth of dirty dishes were stacked up on the counter, garbage all over.

Anyway, the whole time we chatted old Everett up his pet rooster was running back and forth on the back of the couch, squawking up a storm. That chicken was so psychotic he had that couch wore down to bare springs. Old Everett was fine but that chicken didn't like strangers. LOL

Dog with no legs. Named him cigarette. Every now and then we'd take him out for a drag.

We caught a baby possum in my grandmother’s house after it got in via the attic. We fed it bugs and a pinch of ground beef now and then. Couple of box turtles, anoles and small snakes for a while.

Kept snakes of all types growing up. King snakes, copperheads, rat snakes, boas and pythons. Wife was very tolerant after we got married. Our daughter and son fell in love with the critters and had some of their own growing up. My biggest was an 18 foot long python. Total sweetheart.
Posted By: Robb10238 Re: Unusual pets - 02/27/24
Only “different” pet was a wolf/dog cross. Gentle but like to play stalk my youngest and became scared if it so it had to go. Silly thing dug its own den/bed under the deck rather than use its house.
Posted By: JeffyD Re: Unusual pets - 02/27/24
Daughter had a python. Very docile animal, never once tried to bite.
We named it Alf, after the cat eating TV critter, because we would be sitting on the couch, holding him, and when the cat would enter the room, Alf would slowly slither towards it.

Ball Pythons make great pets. I had a 3 foot one that I would wear wrapped around my neck, even while driving.

I had a pig that was a runt and they were going to kill him at the farm I worked. I offered to bottle raise him. Kept him in a dog kennel. He was like a dog. Liked to play and follow me around. When he grew to market size he was too strong for the kennel and would break the gate open. When I came home from school if I didn't let him out. Dad took him to the slaughter house and had him butchered. Some of the best tasting pork I remember. We enjoyed him as a pet and a bunch of good meals.

I moved to Belize in the 80's for the adventure. There was a guy on my island who raised a baby Jaguar into an adult. He would take her to the beach every morning for a swim. Hows that for a cool pet. The cat even slept on their kind size bed and it was big pushing 200 lbs! The guy in the pic was 6ft 3in to give you an idea of cat size.

Was unto falconry. Red-tailed hawk, Kestral, and an owl.

Had a whitetail doe named Daisy. My nephew found her washed up in a brushpile on the creek bank after a big rain. She was tiny and nearly starved to death, my daughter fattened her up with goats milk. She was just as friendly as a dog to anyone who came around. She was never penned, she ran with the wild deer but she'd come up and stomp on the back porch every evening wanting to be petted and fed, grapes and fritos were her favorite. I thought the other deer would shun her because she always had human scent on her from being petted, but they never did. I put an orange reflective collar on her so no one would shoot her. She disappeared when she was two yrs old, never did figure out what happened to her.

I found a mallard drake that couldn't fly. It was December, IIRC. Colder than hell outside. I brought him home in a box and kept him for a few days until my Dad saw lice on it.

That was the end of my duck.

I had a hedgehog. Fleabag
I had a monkey - ride on my shoulder hanging onto my ear. Piss on my back.
I had a wild fox - laser sharp needle teeth

Now I have 2 house cats - happy
Posted By: Brokenarrow Re: Unusual pets - 02/27/24
Also, along with various lizards, snakes and turtles, we had a pet ringtailed possum named Opie. Like Daisy, it stayed outside somewhere down in woods during the day and came up on the porch in the evenings and scratch on the door like a dog wanting to be fed.

Had an iguana that a gf left me. It was dirty, nasty and would bite, scratch or whip you with it's tail.

Some nieces had sugar gliders. As near as I could tell, all they did was eat, sleep, [bleep] and pee in your pocket.

I had a couple of coons but where we hunt west river deer at, there was a guy named Jim. His nickname was messy Jim. He was a massive hoarder. He had all sorts of junk machinery around and the section he lived on was nothing but prairie dogs. All his livestock were inbred and wild. The sheep were never shorn in their lives. Looked like fluffy 55gal barrels. He didn't have water in his single wide so he never bathed. He did have this one sheep though that was always clipped and lived with him. He'd drive around in his ltd and the thing acted like a dog. I'm sure he had carnal knowledge of it.
