hello campfire beer enthusiasts. i have been thinking about something that was making me very thirsty at work all day. care to guess?
thats right. BEER!!!!
now as i am sure you are all aware, we all have our favorites, and we all think that our favs are the best.
now then, since we all have our personal favorites, but they are not all available in all areas, i thought we might make a beer exchange thread.
i personally hear a lot of good things about Shiner Bock, but from the 8 stores i went to yesterday, i cant find it anywhere. i would love to try it if anyone wants to trade a beer for a beer. i personally like Rogue Dead Guy, and Arrogant Bastard Ale. they are my favorites, and are very good darker beers.
so, what do you think guys and gals? wanna trade?
here's the list of beers, and what they are like.
Rogue Dead Guy. ale, darker in color with a strong flavor. good stuff.
Arrogant Bastard. ale as well. also darker with strong flavors, and a smooth finish.
Shiner is ok. You'd have to go a little south to find it in stores though.
i live in southern oregon man, like 30 miles from the border, i cant go much further south without leaving my turf.
Shipping the beer ... would have to be packed carefully, and it would likely get rather shaken up, not to mention cost. Thankfully, I have a broad selection available to me where I live
.
i would send one to you Gringo Loco. i have a great selection as well, but i wanna think outside of town a bit, and this seemed like a fun way to do that.
I get you. Not trying to rain on the parade.
Leinie's Creamy Dark. Northwoods Pub Porter. And the topmost brewski? Guinness... Just had a foamy quart about three hours ago... Gave me a tingle up my leg...
You know, a bit of a beer discussion went on in Mule Deer's thread about Eileen's cookbook. Guys ended up mentioning some of their favorite beers. Seems like, first off, a list of beers considered worthy would need to be mentioned as people chime in. And then you, could check in from time to time, and copy those into your original post via editing to update a beer list. It gets cumbersome chasing through an entire thread to find something. Each beer could have a short description. Then folks could refer to the list and if they decided to do an exchange, work it like the bullet exchange in the reloading forum. I do wonder, though, if a shook up beer might not be compromised to the point that it gives a false impression. Just the list alone might be useful though. It's a thought.
i like your idea Gringo. i will post that in an edited version forthwirth.
Can you Find the Rogue Pale Ale, that stuff Kicks Ass, has a good flavor with a creamy finish! I love that stuff. Les

Next will be the tinkle down your leg
Here is one I found off that thread I spoke of:
If you want some more of the real Czech Budweiser this
http://www.czechvar.com/web/Products.htmlis how it's sold in the US.
It came from Ceske Budejovice, known in nearby Germany as Budweis. The beer is really Budweiser Budvar, but Anheuser-Busch has more cash and lawyers so the real Budweiser is called Czechvar here.
I tried
czechvar and really like it. It is available at Specs. Thanks mathman.
Another good pilsner is
Pilsner Urquell from the town of Plzn, Czech.
I like
AmberBock. However, I'll qualify that by saying it's OK in a bottle, but really seems to shine on tap/draft. While working a job in Oklahoma, the local bar didn't have Sam Adams, so the bartender suggested it. I'm glad she did.
I really like
Sam Adams Winter Lager and
Sam Adams Oktoberfest. They are quite similar, and the alcohol content is a wee bit higher than the usual fare. They are seasonally offered brews. Heavy and Rich if the names did not suggest. Of course, there is also
Sam Adams Boston Lager which is always in my fridge. A bit bitter with a strong flavor. I really like it.
A good brew from Mexico is
Negra Modelo. This is a dark beer if the name didn't tell you with a robust flavor. My second favorite out of Mexico is
Dos Equis Lager in the green bottle.
Well, I'll probably chime in another time with some more. But I need to go run so I can continue to drink beer without having the belly
.
My #1 Guinness
2. Rogue Pale Ale
3. Breckenridge Avalanche
4. Bell's Oberon
5. Shiner Bock
6. Leinies Sunset Wheat
7. Labatt's Blue
8. PBR
9. Coor Light
10. The Beer with the Taste for food, Natty Light!
I see one other wisconsin brewed beer on the list with Leinies, but how about the "Origial Blue Bullet" Point Special Beer. They also have a great root beer and a Point Bock.
Good call on the Negra Modelo. I like the Dos Equis Amber. Three other good Mexican beers that don't make it north are Montejo, Victoria, and Superior. I admit my favorite 2 beers here at home are Bud and Natty Light. Hell I ain't picky I'll drink em all.
Guiness.
Budweiser when on a budget which is now a constant in my life.
Travis
Yuengling Lager
Newcastle
Harpoon IPA
Continental Divide Rasberry stuff was good
Saranac anything
Iron City and Rolling Rock ain't bad
Bud pounders or 32 oz. cans
I dig any IPA, Brown Ales, or Pale Ale mostly. I'd really like to try some Alaskan Brewing Co. stuff.
Shiner is ok. You'd have to go a little south to find it in stores though.
Or north, or east.
A guy can find it all the way up here in Bozeman, Montucky.
There's only one beer that made Milwaukee Famous, back to original formulation, est. 1849.
Drinking a longneck now....
Shiner is ok. You'd have to go a little south to find it in stores though.

Yeah, no trick to finding Shiner any more.
Sam,
Have you tried that Beltian White from Harvest Moon?
Buddy gets kegs of it for his garage. Damn that stuff is good.
Been trying those Spanish Peaks beers out of Bozeman as well. Pretty damn good.
Travis
Travis, I've tried a few brews from Harvest Moon.
Blue Moon, Belgian White and one or two others. Something about them just doesn't jive with my tastes.
Beer is a HIGHLY subjective matter.........(grin)
1- Black Butte Porter - Deschutes Brewery
2- Rooster Tail Ale - Cascade Lakes Brewery
3- Pacifico
4- Alaskan Amber
5- Coors Light
I usually end up buying #5 90% of the time.
Aventinus Doppelbock

Current faves: Bell's Two-Hearted Ale and their Kalamzoo stout.
Always welcome in my house: Rogue's Dead Guy Ale and Dogfish Head's 60-minute IPA. (And the 90-minute IPA when it's on sale.)
- Tom
High Life
Bitteroot Brewery's Nut Brown Ale
Alaskan Stout
PBR
Fruity beers like Blue Moon and Beltian White are for well, never, mind the High Lives are talking now
Newcastle
Scottish Brown Ale
Leinenkugel's sunset wheat
Carlsberg Royale lager
Kirin Premium lager
Leinenkugel's nut brown ale
Black Butte Porter, St. Paulie Girl Dark, or Michelob
most of these beers sound pretty good to me. i dont think i have tried that many of them. anybody wanna trade?
If you like Stone Arrogant Bastard then I doubt Shiner Bock will do much for you. Very ordinary in comparison.
I enjoy drinking that one here:

Yup.
Iron Eagle, you might try something I started doing last year. There's a high-end wine shop in my town that has a high-end walk-in cold room for beer. Their wine guys know their beer, too, and when I first walked in I told them I liked Rogue's Dead Guy and Dogfish Head's IPAs and then I asked them for recommendations.
They steered me to some great finds.

Yeungling and Saranacs are good, so is Pilsner Urqell and Stella Artois. Most anything that can be drunk when warm and has some taste. That lets out most of the big breweries here. Best beer ever was Klumbacher.
Dogfish Head 60 Minute is a great all-rounder for a person who likes hoppy beer. I love the stuff, nicely bitter without being overbearing. It's great for introducing noobs to flavorful hoppy beer without being intimidating.
m
beer is HIGHLY subjective......for instance i aint big on hops.....i really like sour tastes in drinks but for some reason dont tolerate bitter very well...
my favorites:
Alaskan Amber is prolly tops after that depending on mood prolly Blue Moons Belgian White or Killians Irish Red......i tend to drink Coors Light at the bar and given the buddy i always hang out with likes Miller Light i wind up drinking that quite a bit cause its whats in his fridge......
2 pages on that subject and still not an actual beer mention
Don't bring up that girly stuff from Belgium, only thing good from the is Belgian Monk Brews.
We know yer like the French, prefer a wine to a good Bier!
Trappist Trippel is fine stuff, have a store here that sells it by the bottle, 3.75, i buy them 6 at a time, only need like 3 to get that warm feeling.
your making me thirsty here Les.
DAMN YOU, ITS ONLY 10:00 AM AND NOW I HAVE TO CRACK A BEER!!!!
Boss is going to get the afternoon roadcokes now.
Supposedly, this is coming soon:
Guiness isn't beer. It's eel piss.
Okay dammit, now ya got me jealous.
where's mine grand veneur? i'll buy em if you ship em...
i wanna try em all.
Waiting for you in my cellar ...
I couldn't even begin to name all the ones I've tasted but my starting line up is.
Bitburger
Warstiener
Becks
Guiness
anything from Stone
I'm not big on the wheat, bocks,or wiess a little too chewy for me.
and Lackenhauser porter, brewed in a little shed by a wacky pipe fitter and former Navy man in Salsbury MD.
Already written about this in time but ...
US politics addicted, especially conservative ones in trouble with Obama's presidency ... should try this one
BTDT, Neat place.
If you get up to Bamberg, make sure to visit Schlenkerla. Smoked Beer is what they do best. Smells like a smokehouse, with a kick.
I haven't been to Bamberg but I have had that Rauchbier. It didn't suit my taste, which is funny considering I love smoky Islay malts.
Those kind of seem like flyweights for a Stone fan.
they are my everyday beers.
Stone is for special times
I just popped open a new brew.
Mighty Arrow Ale from New Belgium Brewing.
It's gotta a little kick to it. Pretty good so far.
New Belgium has some good brews. I introduced my boss to Shiner Bock's today, says he likes them more that his skunky Heiniken's. Les
Their 2 Below is a great darker beer.
What's the name of the other good one. Fat or Flat Tire?
Fat Tire, that's my favorite from New Belgium.
they are my everyday beers.
Stone is for special times
Gotcha.
My everyday beers are Sierra Nevada Pale Ale, Anchor Liberty Ale and Flying Dog Snake Dog IPA. Can you tell I like hops?
where are you based Mathman?
you wanna trade me one of them shiners for a dead guy Les?
maybe you vcould even throw in that 25mm?
A HOP head in Louisiana.....get out! Most of you coon asses can't handle much more than coors light or buttwiper beer.
you wanna trade me one of them shiners for a dead guy Les?
maybe you vcould even throw in that 25mm?
Nope, Need the Rogue Amber ale buddy. and I want it in Growlers.
I drink real beer, not that candyass mass market stuff that must be served ice cold so the palate can avoid recognizing whatever little flavor is in the stuff. I've been to England, Scotland, Germany and Austria a number of times primarily to relax and drink beer.
Ah yes, that explains it, you know what my test of a good beer is. leave that bad boy out over night, open, if it tastes good the next morning......warm, then it is a good beer.
i'll see what i can find Les, but no guarantees.
I know it comes from your area, last summer, the local store had about 30 cases of it, they were selling it for 3.99 a growler.
Yeah but,
NOTHING beats a 12 pack of ice cold Bud Light on a hot summer day out trolling on a boat.
(grin)
I've been places that had decent beers, but prided themselves on how cold it came from the tap. 36 friggen degrees ain't right for a Fullers ESB!!! I got some funny looks when I asked for a warm glass straight from the dishwasher, but I got what I wanted.

(grin)
up here, that will get you arrested, and your boat jacked by the 5-0
i agree with you mathman, i think that some beers are better warm, and should be drunk that way. my dad doesnt feel that way, but i know decent beer when i try it. most beers that are worth their salt are pretty good warm.
hot summer day out trolling on a boat
That's Czech Pilsner territory.
The thing about "warm" beer in Europe is that it isn't warm. It's just warmer than what we're used to, something like cool cellar rather than refrigerator temperature.
What the warm glass for my ESB did was knock off the excessive chill, but the overall result was still pleasantly cool.
yup, thats what i mean, but some beers are pretty good "warm" too. like 65*
you never did answer me where you are from though.
Yep, not sure how they get it just right, but sure do love it. Les

yeah he did, he a coon ass! Louisiana.
I've only had the Czech Urqull(sp?).
Seemed decent enough for my crude palate.
The Urqull isn't bad at all. Les
oh
my bad dude
i'll pay more attention next time then ...
Henry Weinhard's Blue Boar is a fav here. That and Bud Light.....(laughin')
blue boar aint all that bad, i can drink it real easy without any hatred of it.
Not in any particular order, here are some of my favorites.
1. Midnight Sun Kodiak Nut Brown
2. Henry Weinhardts Blue Boar
3. Dos Equis Amber and Lager
4. Shiner Hefeweizen
5. Blue Moon White on tap only
6. Moosehead Lager
7. Alaskan Amber, Summer Ale, White
8. Miller High Life, yeah I know, it's cheap but we all have to have one as a favorite
9. Sol
10. Glacier Brewhouse Blond on tap or in a growler only
11. Steinlager
12. Stella Artois
13. Asahi
14. Sapporro
15. Heineken
16. Pilsner Urquell
nice choices the AKmtnhntr

Ye speak the same beer language as I, mathman. Never been to the first two but you can say I'm a semi-frequent flier to the second 2 locales.
Wifey was born in Bamberg, and her family and friends are there. We have the luxury of hanging with the natives. Well traveled in Bayern and North Austria I've found a few local breweries I always return to. All time favorite is Kathi Brau in tiny Heckenhof near the Frankish Alps. Very, very dark and hoppy, with a trace of "farm". It's also a meeting place for motorcycles. The owner is a great guy and gave me the 10 cent tour of the brewery. They make a mean pear/apple and plum Schnapps made from fruit trees on their land.
That sounds like a sweet 'tour'!
Interesting. Here's my list of favorite beers that are readily available in most US cities (in no particular order):
Guiness (extra stout - no draught crap)
Franziskaner
Smithwicks
Peroni
Negro Modelo
Trappist
Blue Moon
Fat Tire
Abita
Yuengling
and several more...

Still on your mission to save the beer drinking masses mathman LOL.
Add
Heineken Dark to the list of good brews and
Anchor Porter as well. Frankly, I can find several lagers I prefer over Heineken in the green bottle. Their dark brew is where it's at for me. Taste in beer is highly subjective of course.
How many of you have ever tried
Celis Grand Cru. It isn't for everyone. In fact, I don't really care for it. But if you want strong, complex fruity flavor ... give it a try. I couldn't finish the bottle when I tried it. The Celis brewery used to be in Austin. Apparently it has been sold to some Michigan outfit.
I'm glad nobody has tried to say Sam Adams is good beer,it's like everything else from Mass, garbage.
I like the Maine Microbrews
shipyard,seadog,Katahden
I got drunk my first time on Anchor Steam and JD 12 YO
IPA's when I can afford them
I'm glad nobody has tried to say Sam Adams is good beer,it's like everything else from Mass, garbage.
Apparently you missed reading my post on the first page of this thread.
Sam Adams is GREAT! But as I said in my last post on this thread, whether one likes a beer or not is highly subjective.
sorry Gringo, nothing personal,I would say it's just beer, but that would insult beer.
Drink up on the Sammie my Texan brother
BTW when I say I don't like a beer it just means I won't buy it,doesn't mean I won't drink it, if your buying and it's Sammie....
God Bless Texas! and pass me another!
Well traveled in Bayern and North Austria I've found a few local breweries I always return to.
Have you ever been to the Forschungsbrauerei in Perlach, a Munich suburb? They have a blond bock that is great. The dunkel doppelbock at Kloster Andechs is superb too.

Too funny ADK4Rick. I'm not on any mission. To each his own. The first time I tried Sam Adams, I thought it was too bitter ... didn't really care for it. Several months later, I got to remembering the flavor, and found myself craving it. It literally was an acquired taste for me. I bought some, satisfied that craving, and I've been hooked ever since.
If I'm watching a Canuck Game or a International Canadian Hockey Series.. Its Canadian..
Any other game.. Sleeman or Corona
Hunting.. Its gotta be: Canadian, Moosehead and Bud
Fishing.. Its gotta be: Canadian, Cutthroat Pale Ale and Bud
Parents Place. Either one of these: Kokanee or Sleeman or Corona
Partying with Babes ,its gotta be: Bud and Corona
Before, During or After Playing golf, ball, or Hockey..Pilsner
BBQing.. Either Guiness or Corona
Ya'll just made me crack a Guinness. But my favorite is Chimay!
Just finished a Yuengling Lager, tomorrow I'll have one of their Porter's - good brew from an old PA brewery.
Terminator Stout from McMinnanis Brewery. It just cannot get any better than Terminator.
New Belgium has some good brews. I introduced my boss to Shiner Bock's today, says he likes them more that his skunky Heiniken's. Les
Belgium is probably not a nation's country anymore but what the hell are you calling "New Belgium" ?
The thing about "warm" beer in Europe is that it isn't warm. It's just warmer than what we're used to, something like cool cellar rather than refrigerator temperature.
Right, but some of our beers are are their best cold fresh. I have to admit the best ones are the ones we drink at cellar temperature.
Ya'll just made me crack a Guinness. But my favorite is Chimay!
A real man !
Serve the blue one at 18C (good wine service temp)
Serve the red one at cellar temp. (around 12-14)
Serve the white one at fridge temp (4-6)
New Belgium is the name of a brewery.
