I will start out: it was an old Czech. BRNO 22 Hornet with Double Triggers and Scope for $250 .
Old single shot, shotgun in 16 gauge. $20 from coworker.
Worked in a West Coast Chain in the 70's and got stuff at cost plus 10%. Found a Rem mod 700 BDL in .308 that had been in the inventory since '64. Got if for $28. Also got my dad a Win Mod 70 in 30-06 for $95.
bought a single shot 410 and 2 boxes of shells for $15 back in the late 70's
Bought a carton of 4 Remington Mohawk 600's in 243 that had been dropped and chipped the toe of the stocks on all. $89 each.
Bought a little British double the owners screwed up the price on, it later appraised at 10 times the amount I gave.

The other would have to be a cherry 1949 Super Grade 22 Hornet with a M8-4X long tube leupold scope for $1600 out the door.

This happened week before last. As some of you know I like Kleinguenther rifles. I have both centerfire and rimfire. I've been looking for a k-22 rimfire 22 mag. for some time. A friend owns a restaurant , where we meet an drink coffee. A man walked in an asked the group if anyone was interested in buying 2 rifles. One was a LNIB k-22. I'm now the proud owner. Hasbeen
By a percentage, it's probably a Savage 720 with US stamps that was used by the Air Force in WWII to train pilots and gunners. Paid $80 at an auction, not sure what it would bring but probably 500% of what I paid. Not that I'm selling it, just way too much history.

Oh, and it came with a WW2 recoil pad for the grenade launcher for a Garand. Wonder if that was added at the gunnery school or added after the war?

Forgot one, a C-Sharps 45-120 with RCBS dies, a Shiloh mid range tang sight with Hadley cup, and 80 sticks new Jamison brass, $900 out the door, early model with a Badger barrel, shootin sonbuck.

Remington 700 P in .308, heavy 24" barrel, H&S Precision stock, 3-9x40 Tactical Leupold scope. It's an easy $1400-$1500 rifle. It'a an amazing shooter, even for a dumb ass like me.
I saw one of the Colt .308 AR's the LE-901 model, for $2200 at a gun show last November. I thought about it, but thought it was a little high. 3-4 weeks after Sandy Hook, one went for $7500 on GB. frown
too many that i let go over the years to think about that i regret

best deal
probably a PRE64 model 100 winchester with factory jeweled bolt in 308in 90-95% condition
cost me 200 in the early 90,s at an estate auction
sold it for 450 in the late 90,s
wish i hadnt of sold it now..................

dumbest thing i ever let go
a colt 3rd model woodsman w/6 inch barrel in better than 95% shape
given to me by my uncle back in the late 70,s
sold it like a fool in 2002 for 500

still punching myself in the balls to this day on that one
Rem LVSF 7mm-08 brand new $520
Let's see all within the last 10 yrs.

Marlin Model 1894 in 44 Rem Mag. Manuf 1969 - 1984. 20" barrel, 10 shot tube magazine, adj. sights, straight grip walnut stock and forearm. Barrel seems in good condition though it has been shot. Knowing the owner, I doubt it was hardly shot as he was more a collector than a shooter. Metal condition is much better than wood. Metal condition is likely in Excellent condition but wood is more like Good. That would put it between 95% and 70%. I'll spit the diff and call it 82%.

$175, buyer to pay for shipping, insurance, tracking, delivery signature, etc via your preferred carrier.

I will accept MO, personal or cashiers check though I will not ship until my bank clears the either check. Rifle will be sent FFL to your FFL.
Found a Ruger #1 Tropical in 416 Rem at a pawnshop for $350, they thought it was rusted out but it just had some kind of grease and maybe pollen(?) all over it. I bought it clean it up, then after using it for years traded it for 900 value and I regret that....
Turned down a Model 12 20 gauge for $250 a few years ago. It was a little rough, but no pitting. Really wish I would have bought it now and had Simmons go through it.
in the worst category

Had the chance at a used Remington Sendero, newer model, 7mm RemMag for $700. Local gun show.
I still regret not buying it.
Best deal ever was a Berreta 686 O/U. Blued receiver with gold Ducks Unlimited logo and "#1 of 850". Won that at a raffle. Didn't even pay for the ticket. Was part of my "pay" for providing security at the gun table.

Worst lost was the same shotgun. EX-wife sold it while I was out of town for $650.
Past year I bought a near pristine 1954 Win M70 in 220Swift with an old Weaver 10x target scope up top at a local pawn shop for $800.

Two years ago at the same shop I picked up a pristine Ruger Express in 7Mag for $500. The most beautiful piece of wood I have ever owned on that one.
I picked up a post-64 model 70 lightweight .270 with a nikon 4-16x50 Nikon monarch scope on it for $300. Local classifieds. Rifle was beat to hell, but after selling the scope off, I was $50 to the good on a fun restoration project.

After restoring

Maybe not all that impressive but I bought a rem 722 with a cheap scope in 222 for $200 a while back. Always wanted a 222 and this one was in great shape. Havnt even changed the scope out as this thing shoots so well I'm afraid to tamper with it...
Two Marlin 336's from a pawn shop in good condition for $200.00. One of them was in .35 Rem.

A 98 military barreled action in a nice Fajen stock for $25.00.

A brand new Winchester 101 for $600.00.

My brother scored an absolutely pristine Model 600 Remington in .35 Rem. for $125.00. I kid you not-it was the "woman found out her hubby was cheating and sold everything cheap" sale.
Swedish Model 94 Mauser. All original, presentation wood. Serial number 3 !!
Passed on it for 300 bucks in the early 90's. ARRGH!!
Remington 600 in pristine condition for $125.00---chambered for .35 Remington. That's the one I remember most fondly. Of course, I sold it. frown For a good profit---I was buying/selling at gun shows at the time trying to put Dorothy through nursing school....a long time ago.

Edited to add: I ain't gophergunner's brother in law. smile
We had an old "Waterbury" mantel clock that didn't work...I traded it even for a pre-64 Model 70 in .22 Hornet.
Not really me, but my dad bought a Winchester model 42 pump 410 for $100.00. He gave it to me. I'm thinking it'll be my sons.
The best was a Rem 700 Bdl, 22-250 w/ a Swarovski 4-14 Pro Hunter for $450. The one I really missed out on was a Krieghoff K-80, that was in a local shop on consignment. I asked the shop owner how much the guy was asking for it and he said "Too much". I didn't inquire further. The guy right behind me asked "How much is too much?". He walked out of there with it for $1000. I was sick, but learned a valuable lesson.

There's too many good deals and "sold way to cheap" deals for me to list,...but a couple that occurred lately come to mind.

I found a pristine Sears Model 100 (Winchester Model 94) on gunbroker that nobody was bidding on and picked it up for $238,...walnut furniture,...like new condition,... I put some Lyman sights on it both front and rear. It's my "good for anything that comes along" rifle. I also bought a very nice Stevens model 620A off of Auction Arms for $175. I chopped the barrel to 18.25", milled out a front sight for it, put in a fresh firing pin and some springs, and made it into my bedside companion,.....and then there's that nice 1948 Ithaca Model 37 12 gauge that I got for $250 at a gun show,..

A 1969 Belgium Browing A5 Magnum 20 that I paid $450 for about 8 years ago.

He'd bought it for his father back in 1970. They took it out and shot it once. He explained they couldn't get it to function properly. Wouldn't eject or feed. From there it sat in a closet for the next 35 years, taken out to only be "oiled" with WD40 from time to time.

What the owner thought was rust was just varnished gunk from the WD40 he had used to oil it over the years.

Cleaned up good with some Hoppes. And the gun looked damn near "out of the box" new.

The reason the gun wouldn't function is because they were shooting 2 3/4 loads with the friction rings set up for magnum loads.

It is a beautiful and sweet shotgun and functions flawlessly.
Kimber LH model 82 with 4x leupold for $225. at a pawn shop.

That's gonna be hard to top.
I got a Marlin 336CB 30-30 new in the box at a gun show several years ago for $400.

Also found a Marlin 336 Texan for $150 out the door at a local pawn shop.
The last deal I got isn't as good as some here but I'm happy.

I bought a brand new in the box 11-87 LC Premier with enhanced engraving, high gloss finish, that was on sale with a rebate for $530.00 net including tax.

It was perfect except for a ding in the stock that looked like it had been whacked by a front shotgun bead. I mentioned it to the guy behind the counter and he said it already on sale and they couldn't drop the price. No biggie. It was exactly what I'd been looking for, it had exceptionally nice wood, it was a discontinued model, and probably my last chance to ever buy a new one.

I had to wait on the background check so I left and came back later that evening to pick it up. In the meantime the salesman talked to his boss about the ding and was authorized to give me a $100.00 gift certificate. WOW !!!

A new shotgun at a very fair price and a $100.00 worth of shells to go along with it !!! smile smile smile

I ended up filling the ding with a dab of clear epoxy, carefully sanded it flush, polished it to match, and it disappeared. You have to know exactly where it was dinged in order to see it and even then it's hard to tell.
None of mine have been great deals but ok. I picked up a Winchester Super x1 field in really good shape for $340. And a like new Beretta 390 20 gauge for 500.
Best deal I missed out on was not buying ever case of .22 ammo in a hundred mile radius last Fall and flipping them a couple months later frown for a 500-700% profit.

I passed up a Ti 7mm-08 NIB three years ago for a grand, ti '06 for 900 (could have probably bought that for 850) three years ago.

And while I have one, there was another Mtn. Guild 7mm-08 on here three years ago that was all done up that I still kick myself for not buying.
I've had two that stand out. I bought an Ithaca Model 37 .410 from the 1950s and an early Model 36 Smith Chief's Special both of which were like new from a guy that wanted money to go to the riverboat casino, paid him $400 for both. I sold the Ithaca for $600 and kept the Smith.

The other was a NIB blued Colt Python Elite 4" that I bought for $800 and then resold for $2,400 a few years ago.

I traded a LNIB Single Six .22/.22Mag for an 8 3/8" S&W M27, in the presentation box once. The guy wanted the .22 for his wife to plink with.
When I worked in a gunshop, I got another 27 in 5" for about $250, and a Mossberg 500 for $30, which I gave to a friend.
I love Model 27s.
I got a Savage 99 in 300 sav for 200.00.Still have it.

Then there are the winchester 94s that i got for 100.00 a while back.

Mostly now are mauser rifles that folks are tired of.
Good thread because i love being a tight wad.

VGood Standard Products model US M1 Carbine for $165 OTD in 2005.

VGood JC Higgins Model 20 in 12 gauge for $75 in 2008.
VGood CZ 82 for $150 in 2011.

VGood Norinco SKS for $175 Black Friday 2012.
I got a used (two boxes of shells fired through it) Belgian Browning BLR with a 4x Busnell mounted in Buehler rings, a lambs wool soft case, and a box of shells for $200.00.

It was in 1971 though. grin

I think we have a winner.
Bought a Remington 700 African in .416 Remington Magnum from a place that had it priced the same as all the other BDL's a few years ago. Paid $550 sold a month later for $1200. It even had a $300 scope on it.
This pair of Walther Model B Sporter Mauser's for a but under a grand, a 7x57 and an 8x57. The latter appears unfired. This was in 2008 while living in Alberta.

[Linked Image]

This low 3 digit Ruger Maxi for $225 at a Houston gun show in 2006. Gun appeared unfired but, alas, no more. Chap just figured it a 357 BH.

Last was an AYA 20 bore SxS and an early Ruger 10-22 for $100 from a co-worker who's wife wanted the house "gun free". Amazingly this was when I was living in Midland. He lived in Odessa, gun freee in Odessa?
I got a Tec 9 in 9mm Luger, a Ruger 10-22, Mossberg 500, Ruger SBH and a Colt 4506 pistol a few years ago. Total cost to me was $40*.

*The $40 wasn't for the guns. It was for bailing out my trust fund baby neighbor after he called me at 3:30 am one stormy winter night. His mega-rich cousin got word that his so-called 'buddies' made no effort to bail the guy, but that I dragged out and did, just because that's how I do. As a reward, his cousin gave me the irons. Some positive reinforcement is never a bad thing. Two of the guns he gifted me I traded in on my M4 a few days ago...
H&K P7M13 and a made in Belguim Hi-Power for $800 from a co-worker. Needless to say, both are on my list of regretful sells as well.
Maybe not as great as some but better than others and this one just today. Found a very very nice short action push feed model 70 in 308 with nice sights and a pretty nice Tasco 2-7 scope. I know, I know tasco's aren"t much but it is one of the older Japanese models. The only problem is the birch stock has been shortened but I will replace it anyway and I was even looking for a 308. $300 out the door.

OH NO HE DI-INT! YOU DUMBASS! wink
I was probably 8 or 9 at the time, we lived in southern California. We were getting the oil changed in my pops 62 Olds Starfire and walked over to Big 5 to pass the time. There was a Franchi Falconette Featherweight 20 O/U behind the counter. My Pop asked to see it. He said....I'll take it. I thought it odd as he was in a hurry. He even asked if they had the box. (which they did) We got out and he then told me what he had paid for it. 149.00.

I'm 52 and still have it, shoot doves with it ever September.
In the late 70's I bought a near mint, 6" blue Colt Python from a fellow soldier for $185. He was hard up for some quick cash. He later wanted to buy it back, but I refused to sell it. My son has it now.

The value had grown to $1,400 or so and I was going to use it in a trade, as I wasn't using it. My son let me know it was one of his favorites, so I gave it to him. He gets them all one day, anyway and if he liked it that much, I sure wouldn't trade it.

DF
Plenty of good deals and hard to come up with the "best".

One of the most memorable was a Remington 722 257 Roberts....

I got it 2nd hand in a trade from a guy right on the shore of Lake Ontario, Orleans County probably 20 years ago. I did a $100 job for a nice older couple and when I was done the lady says "my husband is in the garage, go see him and he'll give you a check". OK, I head out back and here is this guy sitting at a work bench tinkering with a small motor of some sort.

What do I see, a couple guns sitting on a rack! As usual I start some small talk about guns & hunting. He shows me the Bob and asks if I wanted to swap for the job, straight up? Absolutely!!

On the way back to town I was wondering what a left hand shooter is going to need this for when the $100 would have paid a bill or two. I get it home and look it over. Some slight pitting and rust on the bottom side of the barrel and the stock looked like it could use some lovin'. (turns out it was stored upside down in the rack and some water dripped on it!)

I got some cold bluing from Brownells and did a little work on the rust then stripped and refinished the stock. The rest of the metal on the gun was 99%. It turned out great and is a fine shooting gun.

Oh yea, a couple months after the deal the guy I got it from calls me up. He said to stop by the next time I was in the area because he found some ammo for the gun. Cool I thought.....

A few days later I made a special trip over to see him as I was curious what he had. Turns out it was 5 full and perfectly preserved boxes of Remington green/red boxed 257 Roberts factory fodder. That made a sweet deal even sweeter!

My son killed his first deer with it in Pennsylvania 7 years ago on a rainy cold Saturday afternoon. It hasn't seen any action since that great day in PA. other than the occasional trip to the range. It is a excellent shooting Remington that hopefully someday will see some more field use.
I believe this - MY - act of stupidity will end the thread. . . .

I was 21 years old with about $2500 in savings. An antique arms dealer, Phil Kogler, had for sale a Holland & Holland Model Deluxe, the grade #2 in quality beneath the Royal Grade, double rifle in 450/400 BPE, asking $2000. Yes, this was a long time ago. I visited his office where he took the rifle from his vault. This was, I believe, an older former bank vault. I carefully examined the rifle that was in excellent-perfect condition. From H&H's records, the rifle had been built in 1904.

I told Phil I would think it over and let him know whether I wanted the rifle within 24 hours. Among things I investigated were ammunition availability, for I was interested in owning a "shooter." Ammunition, having been out of production for decades, was available on the collector's market at about $5.00 per round.

I called him the next day. Using the lack of ammunition as a factor, I managed to get him to reduce his price to - wait for it!! - $1300. I then passed on the rifle.

The last time I checked, a similar rifle was selling for six figures. . . . Oops.

A German Korth-Waffen revolver for $4000. cool
Been buying and trading guns since 1959, I've bought many guns at super cheap prices. BUT, last week a friend called me and said he'd just bought a large gun collection ( over 100 ), and he wanted me to come over and help price some of them. Rushed over and there was guns all over his garage, maybe 50+ military rifles, a bunch of older shotguns, ( nice ones too), and some old Winchesters. He asked me what turned me on, and I told him I always wanted a 92 Winchester. He handed me a nice 92 rifle on 38-40, And while admiring it, I said " if it was only a saddle ring carbine in 44-40". He reached around and went to the bottom of the box and handed me a 92 saddle ring carbine in 44-40. Thought I'd died and went to heaven. Gun was all original, no cracks in the wood and about 50% bluing. He said if you want it, it's yours for $450. Now that was my latest best deal.
My best deals have some in the last couple weeks. I picked up a remington 700 mountain rifle dm in 260 remington for $500. My dad bought it from a guy at a gun show for the same price. I expressed my interest in it and he passed it on to me for what he paid for it. As near as I can tell, it's never been shot. The next one was at a local gunshop. I was in there looking for 22 ammo and a guy walked in wanting to sell a gun to the owner. When he told her it was a 222 remington she said she wasn't interested. I followed the guy to his car and asked if I could see his gun. He uncased a beautiful remington 788 in 222 which he sold me for $250. I sold it the next day for $450. I also ended up with a s&w model 10 victory for $150 last week. The one I most regret selling, winchester model 70 classic sporter LT in 7STW. I let it go for $500 with a leupold vari-xiii.
My wife brought me home a Browning lever rifle in .308 a couple of months ago. Followed by a .22 cal benjamin trail air rifle..

Yep I'm going to keep her!
I bought a Winchester M-1 carbine for $250 back in the late
1980s through a newspaper classifieds and sold it for $250 a few weeks later.
About 10 years ago, give or take, I had a guy try to sell me
a Remington 700 TI in 708 for $600. He was hurting for money
big time, but not as bad as I was, and I passed on it.
Best was a Dakota M10 in 7X57 with decent wood on Gunbroker for $2250. Owner forgot to put a reserve on it, but was gentleman enough to honor the price.
My first Model 21 Duck Grade when I was in High school. My mom's friend was having an estate sale and she wanted me to go with her as she was buying a heavy end table. We get there and I see some cork decoys which I also bought. Anyways the lady said my dad has two guns too. I asked to see them, one was a .22lr and the other the 12ga M21 Duck grade 30" F&F. I said how much for the shotgun? She said $50 I said I would give you that in a minute but that would be robbery on my part. I offered her $1000.00 all I had in the bank at that time. She said give me $500 and you can have the decoys too.

Regretfully I sold it when I was in A school in Millington TN.
Beretta 686 12 ga new on clearance for $350, I Ended up buying a Beretta 302 20 ga for $200 which was a good deal but not near as good as the over and under.
I don't know to me the 303 was a better deal.

You did mean 303 right?
Numerous U.S. Gov issue 45 Colt automatics that I purchased in the 1960's for $25-$35. Worst loss was the same guns I sold during the same period for $35. to $50. Unfortunately had to pay the grocery bill. GW
Worst missed gun deal was a 1921 Thompson with violin case both in like new condition back in 1983 for $1000.00.100% legal and transferable. Kicked my self ever since.
Here's one I missed . I was on Vacation and just got home . Sat down and read the Newspaper . Here's the Ad I read : " Old Lever Action Rifle , looks like an Antique , marked HENRY , $40 . " I immediately called . An elderly Lady answered and said it was Sold ....Oh well !
The best deal I got, was $50 for a CZ24 Mauser my buddy had. I was with him when he bought the rifle before Hurricane Katrina hit, anyways after Katrina he shot it several times with corrosive ammo, never cleaned it and then put it away for 5 years. He tried to trade it in on a new shotgun for his son, but the gunshop owner would only give him $50 as the barrel was in bad shape. I todl him to hold on to it until we came to visit, as I wanted the action for a project. I looked the gun over and while the barrel is not in the best shape, the action is still in great shape. I gave him the $50 for the rifle, and then he says wait there's a catch you have to take the Mosin in the closet as well. He told me since it was his FIL and the man is in prison, the rifle is not allowed to stay in the house er his wife's instructions.

Bought my cousins Winchester 30-30 that was brand new for $7.00 because he broke the firing pin, replaced it with a Gun Parts pin.

Worst deal - I sold it for $100.00

So you paid $3,000 for it?
Traded a Browning 300win stainless with that tunable muzzle brake and a S&W 41 for a Anaconda with box and a Benelli M1 Super 90 with short barrel and rifle sights. Well I think it was a pretty good deal for me.
3 years ago bought Remington 700 ss 25-06. Model seven ss 7mm-08. Both with bushnell elite 3200 . In great shape for 825! Cant find them deals now.
I didn't buy it personally for this price, but when working at a pawn shop a guy brought in a pristine Winchester 70 featherweight in 257 roberts with a Leupold Vari-X III. He only wanted to pawn it for $60. We kept telling him he could get more, but he wanted to keep it low so he would be able to get it out easier. Anyway, after 1 year and not hearing from him we finally decided to put it up for sale.
