I could see no copper at all in the rifling at the house with a light down the bore
Seen no wear of the bluing in the rifling at all.
Like maybe a little tiny bit on the shoulder of some of the lands like maybe
From 1 or 2 rds test fire from the factory.

Pulled no carbon outta the barrel at all with a freshly washing machine cleaned bore snake done yesterday

It had no marks from the action being worked in the lever case coloring at all.

We started working the lever after I lubed up the gun very generously
And after awhile a very faint crescent started to form.

The bolt face is absolutely pristine with no cartridge head or primer ring signs at all.

I was impressed...
And I'm not a 99 type really.
light safe marks at the most.
Way better condition than how ya described and their is nothing wrong
With that one bit.

Put a fat bead on it.

Stuffed the butt stock with wally world bags and 16oz of fishing sinkers for some

I don't have anything near the quality of some of the firearms posted in this thread, but here are a few from my very humble collection...

A little CZ "Bobwhite" in .410, choked improved cylinder/modified. It's great for woodcock, rabbits, or early season squirrels.


...another early season squirrel get'r, and a great trap line gun, an early Savage 24 .22/.410. She certainly won't win any beauty pagents, but shes quite handy!


...and what used to be my "go to" squirrel rifle, the CZ Silhouette is down at the moment, due to the infamous "pad rot." Redneck's gonna fix me up with a new pad soon. While the stock's off, I'm thinking about giving it a camo paint job as well. It's topped with an old Burris "HBR" 6x Mini, with the fine, fine, FINE reticle and the 1/8" dot.


This is my "Ohio Whitetail" get'r, a T/C Contender with an MGM 21" bull barrel in .357 Magnum, wearing a little Burris 4x20. I keep saying I am going to upgrade to something with a little more objective, but I never do.


I had this rifle built a few years ago for my daughter, who prefers my 7-30 Waters Contender Carbine. Go figure. Remington Model 7 with a Shilen #1 barrel at 22" (the barrel looks much thicker in the photo for some reason) She's chambered in.250-3000 with a 10 twist, bedded into a (now defunct) S&K stock, and topped with a Leupold FXII 4x33.


This was my Dad's rifle, a tang safety Ruger 77, that was originally a standard model in .270. It never did shoot worth a hoot, so I had a gunsmith friend of mine screw on a #1 Shilen cut to 20", chamber it in .257 Roberts and bed it into a Ruger 77rl stock. She wears an older Leupold M8 in 6x36. The trigger has been upgraded with a Rifle Basix sear. It didn't do much for the take up or over travel, but it snaps right at about 2 pounds. One of these days, I may break down and get a Timney for it.

Love the Colt/Sauer. Never have found one though. Guess I don't look hard enough!

That is a Savage 99K. It is topped with a reproduction Stith no drill scope mount and the scope is a Lyman All American perma center with a post and crosshair reticle.

I'm going to attempt a fall turkey with a rifle this year.

I have been hunting this ranch since around 2004. I go up at least once a month. Consequently I've got to know where the turkey roost and come to water and where they hang out. I will drive to the areas where they be, on my 4-wheeler and use box calls, mouth calls and sometimes an electronic game caller. Turkey are much more vocal in the spring. I'll call, they will answer. At that point I start my stalk.

Sierra Game Kings in the 6.5 (that rifle was smithed by Bo Clerke), 130 Gr. Nosler Ballistic Tips in the 270 Win. , 160 gr. Nosler Partitions in the 7mag, 140gr. Accubonds in the Maple Dakota, 280 Rem. 180 Gr. Accubonds in the 300 H&H. I try to hit them at the juncture of the neck and feathers. I'm not good enough to head shoot em'.

Here is a colt woodsman that was purchased new by my great aunts' husband in 1950. He later was found on a dead end road in an oilfield with this pistol by his side and a bullet hole in his right temple. I do not know if it was ever shot again. My great aunt kept it all those years and gave it to my dad before she passed away a couple of years ago. He gave it to me before he passed I have not shot it. One of my few safe queens. The check given to purchase the pistol is dated 8/30/50, and is made out to Navel Co. for $60. I also have the original box.

Texas Longhorn Arms version of Elmer's famous #5, hand built in Texas by Bill Grover. This one in .45 Colt with an extra .45 Mag cylinder.

Holster is a Bill Grover design made by Ted Blocker.

Mr. Grover hand made a series of these guns, reversing the loading gate and ejector housing. He claimed Sam Colt was left handed, made these guns for his idea of what a right handed shooter should have.

This gun had been sent to Dave Clements to harden and re-cut the sear. Mr. Grover's metal hardening, reportedly, wasn't always first rate. Anyway, Dave Clements fixed it and it's about perfect with a crisp, light trigger.

A collector offered me a lot more for this gun than I had in it, so I let him have it. It's a good shooter, the .45 Mag version being slightly more accurate than the .45 Colt.

Not a sexy weapon like my new milled AKM, but a good fighting weapon,
one i can run the crap outta with bimetal ammo.


250 Otd WASR 10 clinton ban model.
Guy I was in the 3/187th in the mid 90,s
owns the most popular gunshop and indoor range in town.
This was his range AK.
Finally after 4 months of talking about selling it to me
I got the call yesterday at 11am.
He replaced the barrel and bolt 5k rounds ago back in December

All the rest is 2002 with about a 25 k round count total.
He got a New WASR 10.
Have checked out this rifle many times. GTG.
Told Dave I wanted to run some rounds thru it
to check for function.

Thing looked like it had fossilized carbon in it from hell.
Just got done cleaning the fugg outta it.

Couple of shooting sessions and cleanings each time will get to a higher standard.
Specially if I douche it with solvent and oil mix at end of firing when hot.
Then clean it at the house.


Ran 40 rounds of offhand controlled pairs at 25yds thru it.
It ran slow due to all the carbon, but functioned perfect.
No tumblers or yawing issues.
Happy with it for now. It's in the ball park with wolf fmj 122gr.
Fine tune it later at 50 and 100 yds.
Needs a new gas tube, can't clean that mofo to my
standard. I need to start with a new one, 30 bucks.
Need ta cut the weld off the clinton ban thread protector and put a basic
comp brake on it ,chevron style one 20-25 bucks.
Need a Ergo pistol grip 20 bucks.
Redo the wood after 2019 spring turkey.
Leave the metal alone, in way better condition than I originally thought after cleaning it.
Just got done taking care of the tapco hammer bumps for smooth fast cycling.

Check out 1st 3 groups of controlled pairs head and chest.

I traded for this BAR. The metal was perfect, the wood was showing wear. I refinished the wood, sent it to Errol Case in MO to restore the fancy checkering and carving.

I then traded it at considerably higher value than what I had in it. Fancy, engraved hunting rifles aren't my cup of tea. I've had a few BAR's. They're OK, just don't have any currently.

This is one of my favorite firearms. The pistol was my Grandfathers' and is just like he left it. Steel knucks are from the same period as the pistol and are the inspiration for the push dagger my brother and I made. This photo was used as an ad for the Push Dagger.

I met an older gentleman in the early 90,s from Benton Kentucky
Had a 60' x 40' enviormentlly controlled bldg
Long guns galore
Dealer/ collecter type of guy.
Bought a 95% 1962 win mod 100 .308 from him and an extra mag
For 400 1992 dollars.
Said he bought it off an older neighbor in 1966 that gave up deer hunting.
Sent it in to Winchester in mid 80,s for the recall work.
He had never fired it
Ran 10 shells thru it behind his bldg
Sold it like a fool in 2001.
Offered him 900 for a pristine pre 64 .308 fwt w/alum bottom metal.
Said he wanted ta keep it and pass it on to a nephew
Didn't push it , understood what he said.

In 2005 I called him up and inquired if he had any Garands for sale
Told him who i was, he remembered me.
Drove out to Benton, he had to be in his mid to late 80,s but was very physically active and able.
Caught up on events from us both.


Got a Winchester Garand off him for 800.

Still had that fwt, he let me oogle it again.
Didn't even ask about selling it again.

After looking at all of.these pictures, I think I'll go and throw all my guns in the dumpster!

Nice customized Fox XE in 16 gauge.

Consecutive serial numbered custom Brownings in 16 gauge.

Something you don't see everyday. A pre-war Walther presentation grade 22 Semi auto bolt. If you lift the bolt it operates as a semi.

Major Charles Askin, Sr. personal 1932 Superposed. The Major was Col. Charley Askins' Dad, one of the most renouned gun writers of the early to mid 1900's. He was a shotgun guru.

I am not big on engraving on receivers in the "white" but that is one pretty BAR....

I think it has a satin chrome or such finish. It is pretty.

I traded it for a Dakota .270, later traded that one for my Ed Brown Damara, 300 WM, which is a keeper.

Wow, 16 ga. Supers are rare as hens teeth. I learned a good bit about that, studying the Askins clan as I researched the 1932 Super posted above. I guess you know the story of ole Charley getting a 16 ga. Super built for his wife.

Luckily I had kept a copy of the money order and had the tracking number. The seller was patient and did not crucify me in the Classifieds.

This is something "different". It started life as a 16 ga fieldgrade Fox Sterlingworth. At some point in time it ended up in the of Roe Clark, the then historian for Savage/Fox. He converted it to a 45-70 double rifle. I understand the barrels were sleeved with Springfield rifle barrels and sweated into place. A new bevertail forend was made to fit at the factory. The barrels are now 25 inches in length. The sight are Savage sights that you would find on the Savage model 24 combination guns. John Callahan, now retired Savage/Fox historian sold the gun to me about 4 years ago. I hand load for it using data for the trap door Springfield 45-70. The gun is fully documented by JTC from factory records and personal history.

Here's a picture of the re-finished stock, showing some of the re-cut checkering. Upgrading the wood from what it was to this added a lot of value, helped set up the trade for the Dakota and ultimately the Ed Brown Damara, which was an even swap for the Dakota.

Check out Hendershots Sporting. Lance has some great guns and will trade if it's something he's interested in. The Dakota was used, stock showed some wear, metal 100%. He sent it back to Dakota for wood refinish, increasing it's value considerably. Just goes to show what some wood restoration can do for a gun's value.

top, #1S in 45-70. 1974 DOM. I believe this one has a Douglas barrel. MUCH more quality than the newer ones

And the bottom one is a #1B in 30-06. Dom 1976. This one has either a Douglas or a Wilson barrel. I have no idea which.

Seems the Wilson barrels were hit or miss, some shot very well. I had a .220S red pad with great wood. I think it probably had a Wilson and it was a shooter.

I think the older, red pad guns seem to have better wood than the later black pads.

The #1B '06 has a 26" heavy barrel. This is a GREAT thread considering the current atmosphere in this country. Keep them coming fellas.

I seldom have customs done. I find that i can buy them pre-enjoyed at a better value. The story on this one was that it was smithed a number of years ago by ITD Custom Guns. Anywho it is a shooter.

I took it a couple months back to check zero along with a couple other guns.



Shot once and put it back in the case. Why mess up a one hole group.

One I lucked into a while back when I still went to gunshows. The maker was somewhat prominent in the Houston, Texas Area between the 60's until the late 70's. His name was Wayne Barnett. His sign read Wayne Barnett, Master Gunsmith. Anywho I spied it and lust set in.

Mauser 98 action, jeweled bolt, butterknife handle, double set triggers, in 35 Whelen, nice wood, period correct scope, which I've never changed.

don't hunt it that often anymore, but there was a time..

I have a lot of photos of guns but this is my favorite of my wife with a gun, although she don't like it. she is holding a uberti cattleman in 45 LC

I have seen a few over the years in my travels, but not in that good of condition.

Good morning to you sir, I hope that this first Monday in August finds you and your fine family well and keeping cool enough.

It's been much too long since I've said hello to you and I apologize for that. I do want to say thanks to you and to the OP and rest of the good folks here who have joined in for the visual feast. It reminds this semi-old guy of the 'Fire of yore and why I joined back in the day.

The second apology is that I've no new photos of arms to share, but perhaps some of the newer members haven't seen some of these or I suppose the older members have already forgot?

In no particular order then - my old saddle rifle an '82 vintage No. 1 in .300 Win Mag. I installed a Moyers trigger, a barrel band from a chap in I believe Wyoming who isn't with us anymore and finally a fore end I cobbled together one winter.


This was an interesting project in that it was for the Watch Sargent of a buddy of mine and I never, ever met the chap in person. So I had to guess and extrapolate a few fitting issues and when it came to what he liked in checkering he said "Surprise me?"


Other side - I forget now where he'd got the blank from, but so help me GW it was as nice a chunk of wood as I've seen in quite a while.


Ruger 10/22 I did up for a rimfire match I used to participate in. Everyone needs a "money pit" gun, no?


1958 Brno No 5 which was a birthday gift from my good wife years back. They were sold as training rifles for Middle Eastern armies and the original stock looked exactly like that, so one winter it got new pajamas.


Last one for now GW - Ruger 77 Liberty Model, rebarreled to .308 Norma with a Parker Hale barrel, rust blued by your's truly, this is the 3rd stock made up from a Richard's Microfit blank

Wow! The perfect rifle! It has it all....Husqvarna action, gorgeous fiddleback stock that goes all the way to the end, 7mm Mauser. Grail gun!

This is as close as I have been able to come. It is in 243 Winchester which is ok but not what I would choose given a choice. The stock is in fiddleback walnut but the coverage is only about 90%. It does go all the way to the end though. I'm happy with it, or I was until I saw the one you have. I might need to re barrel it.

here is the rest of the full stock heard. the first one is another Husqvarna 30-06 with a 3x9 ted Williams (weaver) in vintage redfield rings and mount. the middle one is a ruger RS in 243 it has a 1.75X5 vintage USA steel Burris, it was born 1984 the one on the far end is a not to often seen H&R ultra rifle model 301 made in the early 70s it has a 2X7 vintage Leupold. it is in 243 as well,,,,,

Harry that is a nice rifle you have and there is no need to re-barrel it! if you are deer hunting with it, it will do every bit as good a job as a 7X57 I have killed a lot of deer with a 243 and 6mm rem. they are one of my favorite calibers. what's not to love? they are super accurate with low recoil and kill deer dead,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Olskool, I'll leave it like it is. It is in too good a shape to go messing with. I've just had a couple of bad experiences with the 243 on whitetail deer in the past that I think some premium bullets should solve.

It is stock. You won't see machining on the top of the bolt like this either. Those 2 Sakos in 244 Remington were made in the 50's and only briefly, that is why it is so rare to see the two different models in 244...
