This is why you should always use a 'inside the comfort-stretch waistband' holster while carrying in the grocery store:

SANDY — Police say a 67-year-old man accidentally shot himself while grocery shopping.

About 5:50 p.m. Wednesday, a man was shopping at Smith's, 10305 S. 1300 East, when he bent over for an item and a handgun fell out of his waistband, said Sandy Police Sgt. Jason Nielsen.

When the man picked it up, the gun went off, striking him in the right knee, Nielsen said.

No one else was injured. The man was transported to a local hospital with injuries that were not life-threatening.

Nielsen said the man was lawfully allowed to carry the weapon. As of Thursday, no charges had been filed.

In Utah??

Maybe he was trying to prevent himself from buying something evil. Like a Coke or a black coffee or something.

The temptation can be pretty bad sometimes!
Wouldn't have gone off if he hadn't put a finger (or thumb) on the trigger when he picked it up. Probably scrambling trying to get it picked up before someone noticed and not paying as much attention to where he was grabbing it.

yea he was in the 3.2% beer isle..........

picking up a 12 pk of Busch Light from the bottom shelf
I saw an old guy carrying a single action revolver cocked in his leather cowboy holster at our local Piggly Wiggly. I just got away from him as fast as possible.
Those hammer springs can be pretty stiff.

Maybe he gets his kid to cock it before he leaves the house.

My thoughts as well. Just like that back flipping federal fool who shot a bystander when he picked up his fallen gun.
Geeeeesh......
If you are packing a hi-cap 9 in Utah, you can't use the "15 Items" line at checkout.
Years ago I snatched at a loaded Glock that was falling off a high shelf. Scared the snot out of me and I switched to kydex holsters,so it would never happen again. I touched the gun before I stopped myself, but it could have been bad.

burn in hell for a sip of Lipton iced tea but it's ok to marry your 12 year old daughter

Yeah, I am sure that Smith's is a real den of iniquity.

The Utah town where I work had a murder last spring. Prior to that, the last murder was in May of 1965. While I am all for concealed carry, I do get a kick out of the old guys that have a Glock 19 with two extra magazines in their belt when they go into the local donut shop.

During the same timeframe, we have actually had three people struck by lightning.

I guess they will be ready for the apocalypse. That will sure make me look foolish when I have to run back to the truck.

That's 'daughters' thank you very much.
Man, the anti lds vibe is strong here.

Plenty to dislike about the culture of that area without getting [bleep] about it.
Jeeze Louise folks.

I was baptized Catholic and was an alter boy. You think I never got teased??

Just having a bit of fun this morning.
Open carry would have prevented this.
Hope he didn’t shoot his dick off.
Yep, more evidence that only trained LEO's and military should possess firearms. The rest of us are bumbling idiots who shoot ourselves in grocery stores. I can't believe no charges have been filed!

Not my feelings at all ,but the fat guy I see in Walmart with the Unkle Mike's soft holster and some model Highpoint hanging half way out the holster worries me.

Ridiculing Utah reveals just how jealous you are.

Said every guy that didn't have a gun when needed.

IMO, open carry makes this even more likely. MUCH higher chance of snagging the gun on something when you move or stretch. Concealed carry is protected carry.

LOL, the primal diet thread and this post reminded me about a situation I had, the primal thread on about how important it is for us aging men to keep leg and core strength, the old armed man in a store part came from me seeing an elderly guy just start listing to his right as I met him coming into a store as I was leaving.

I noticed it looked like his right leg and ankle area just quite working for him, or got weak or something, he threw his right arm out in the air like there was a wall there or some kind of support, I dropped my bag of sandwiches and cope, ran up and hipped the old guy on his right side with my left, and wrapped my left arm around his ribcage and back to hold him steady for a sec or two, and Yup, you guessed it, he had some sort of pistol strapped to his right side.

I have to wonder how/if he could use the damn thing without hurting himself or an innocent, I held him there till he regained his bearings, he thanked me and said, "damn son, you're fast" smile
Just read about a fellow in Texas some where that was visiting the meat dept.in his store when he felt his gun slipping and shot himself in the groin.

Some folks just need the drama i guess. smirk

"......when he bent over for an item and a handgun fell out of his waistband,...……."

Sometimes stupid hurts.

There's something to be said for a serviceable belt and holster.

Probably a stretchy waistband, short barreled handgun, carried roughly in the AIWB position. Bent over (with a healthy gut?) and dumped it right on the floor.

It's them safety triggers bein safe. LOL.
Can we safely assume it was a Glock?

Hard to say. Maybe he was getting ready to throw-down over the last six-pack of 'Ensure' and had a cocked single action army.........
Carrying it cocked over an empty chamber makes it easier to “ fan it “ don’t you know.

I don't think so.

We can safely assume he pressed the trigger while picking it up.
All levity aside, this is a good object lesson with two vital points:

1. Do not skimp on a holster. Security and safety ought to be your #1 priority with a holster, with comfort #2, and price a very distant 3rd.

2. Be darn sure that the way you carry does not lessen either access nor security of the gun. You have to be able to draw it, but not lose it.

Most responsible carry people end up with a "holster box" full of holsters that were tried but didn't work out for one reason or other. Don't be afraid to have one of your own.

Other than an armed escort, what other option would a man in that condition really have, other than some sort of gun? He sure as heck couldn't handle one on one with a thief or assailant.

I don't know. If his idea of concealed carry was inside his wasteband without a holster I speculate his version of open carry would have been walking around with it in his had with his finger on the trigger "ready to go".
I admit there's one way that open carry would have prevented this.

And that is if some hood rat had snatched it from him before he could drop it. Open carry is literally an invitation to steal the gun - and shoot the owner.
We have open Carry here in Wyoming. The number of mouth breathing, neck bearded fools you see carrying a high point in the waistband of their sweatpants is astounding. Blissfully unaware of how easy they’d be to disarm and pistol whip the diabeedus right out of.
Headed for SLC tonight. Wish me luck! It's sorta scary....

Gunner. I remember an action plan you wrote a few years back, if you were going to knock off the local Reilly Auto Parts Store.

Seems I remember you would enter the store, shoot Bubba open carry in the head to neutralize him and set the tone for the rest of the operation.

In a serious conflab open carry dudes could be targets of opportunity. And an easy source of a loaded weapon.

I like the freedom of open carry, would never do so myself for tactical reasons. And for sure not in a SE OK Reilly Auto Parts Store...🙀

The old dude said you were quick....?

Just make sure you don't leave the car doors unlocked. If you do, there is a good chance your car will be filled with little plastic plates of cookies or grandmas fruitcakes when you get back. In the summer, it will be filled with zucchini.

I like Utah, it's very white this time of year (ALL YEAR). Gotta swap trailers, head for LA, turn around and then Helena by Monday night. For a day off!

Yah, I will be careful no daughters get sneaked in too. I swear, when I was still youthful and somewhat handsome a Mormon family invited me to dinner, round about Christmas time. I am pretty sure I was offered the choice of either ONE of two lovely daughters to be worked out amongst ourselves, of course with the condition I quit partying 100%, and if I pulled any BS it'd be dire! I have oft wondered how that woulda' worked out. Gosh, they was lovely brown-haired honeys with all the right features! Luscious and they knew what was up far more that I did.
Did you feel it ruffle your hair, Boomer? Scottish? Kilt?

Newcomers to Utah often get invited to a steak dinner. Except that it's "stake" dinner - meaning an LDS recruitment function. You only make that mis"steak" once.

No doubt about the gorgeous women, though. My neighbors have three daughters, all stunning. Lots of Nordic ancestry here, and tall, willowy blondes abound.
Just hitting 32F where I am. We'll see. I think it was indeed a stake dinner!

That's IF he doesn't have to drive I-15. Now THAT'S scary!!

I don't understand why people go cheap on holsters or act like they don't even need one. I know some of them can get spendy. I paid $300.00 for a Diamond D Guides Choice. I also carry everyday in a Safariland ALS duty holster or an Alien Gear Cloak Tuck 3.0. Most of the Alien Gear holsters are under $60. The modular ShapeShift is right at $100. There is no excuse for not getting a quality holster once you've decided to start carrying.

Yep,

We have the same mouth breathing open carry, attention seeking clowns here too. They seem to be looking for an opportunity to over-react. There was the jackwagon old fart I saw not too long ago who had some sort of Springfield XD POS in an uncle mike sausage sack holster strutting around in Walmart about 3 months ago. He was wearing a shirt that said (I am not kidding) " If I am here, it is not a Gun Free zone" crazy

I thought to myself, if I was a criminal, I would walk up behind him and either bash him brains in or just cut his throat and have a cheap, free gun. The guys was clueless as far as situational awareness goes, but he sure wanted everyone to see he was armed and a tough guy.

While I support the right, I don't support the practice.

Absolutely no other option neighbor, we ALL grow closer to that very same scenario everyday for ourselves, I think it's gonna suck too.

LOL, yes DF, when I walked into that store and saw bubba slumped over the sales counter ON both elbows with the big six shooter proudly worn open for all too see, I thought ho lee chit, were I a criminal, bucket head would get the first one right behind the ear. crazy

laugh, the old man called my white bearded old ass son, if that tells you how old he may have been, he said I was quick as a cat on my feet, probably just looked that way to him because I jumped about 5 feet towards him to catch him before he tipped over ; ]

Probably more like me in that I support the right, just wish idiots didn't practice it.

We had a shooting in a local mall in Birmingham. Bad guy got away, but a cop killed an idiot civilian running with his gun drawn at the scene. There was even reports of armed civilians shooting into the air after the initial shooting.Don't know if that has been substantiated or not. It was a mess.

You probably already know this, but cops tend to shoot themselves quite often, too.

And, I've been amazed at how many LEO's, professionals so to speak, can't shoot that well.

Back in my cowboy action days, we would occasionally have "cops and cowboys" events to raise money for charity.

I've seen seasoned LEO's drop clips, fumble with weapons, shoot bad enough to embarrasse me, must less them. There was one deputy sheriff, however, who was an artist with a 1911. I enjoyed watching him shoot. He was a stand out, The rest of that bunch was pretty worthless, IMO. Cowboys beat'em bad.

If I was going to be a professional LEO, maybe I wouldn't be the best, but I'd for sure beat the heck out of the pack I saw trying to shoot.

In a bind, I'd rather have one of our cowboy action guys or that 1911 deputy in my corner. Not sure how well protected I've be with some of those wannabe marksmen.

Its been like 20 years so I forget if the NY trigger springs on my G19 is the 8lb or the 12lb set-up, pretty sure its the 12pound.. 'spect I could still manage to shoot myself after I dropped it accidentally in the grocery store, but not quite as easy. I had the 8lb trigger on a G29 I had.

I don't recall ever meeting anyone who likes that setup, but they do at least give that staple gun stock trigger a much cleaner break. I figure in a gravest extreme scenario I wouldn't notice the extra pounds on that trigger at all, but it might make unintentional shots fired a bit less likely.
