That is what I thought, while standing waist deep in the ocean fishing, and down the shore Albert was shark fishing. He was not catching anything, so I kept fishing. miles
cool all it costs is getting here and a few day fishing license. i'll take care of bait, food and stuff, if you have a tent bring it. i just sleep on a cot unless its raining. i have a lot of rods and reels.
Couldn't make stx's last get together, but the Mayor of Padre Island was nice enough ta give me all kinds of advice, and sent me to his friends to get outfitted for the trip.
Camped in a tent, had a great time.
stx came by, brought enough fishin gear for 8 people, and grilled fajitas for us out on the beach.
Been back 5-6 times since then, caught trout, redfish, and stuff I couldn't identify.
The place is good for beachcombin, or havin the kids dig for buried treasure, which history says is there somewhere.
It's a good time just sittin under the canopy, drinkin a cold one with a beach all to yourself for a mile.
A place you wanna go with other people the first time, cause you can be miles from civilization.
Amazing place. Made several trips in years past. When I first went you had to drive the beach from Bob Hall pier. Little Shell and Big Shell were the destinations. Even one trip all the way to the cut. Great fishing. Hasbeen
I live about 1 hour from there and have fished it a few times. Awesome country- basically the final frontier. We sharked fished summer before last and caught a couple of 4'-5' footers, a large stingray, a bunch of specs and skipjacks wade fishing, and quite a few cold Miller Lites! Tons of fun but do not go unprepared- it is remote
I drove way down the beach when I went, not to the end but a long way. Had a great time with Roger and all, everything but the fact that my lower legs and top of my feet sunburned. I never wear shorts at home and it hurt me. I did use lotion, but fishing I washed it off. Truck still had sand in it when I sold it. miles
We were "blessed" with a small hurricane on the other side of the Gulf that trip. Wind never stopped howling, sand in everything, very dirty water, sand in everything, poor fishing, sand in everything, some bonehead guys who drove through all of Roger's shark lines, sand in everything, and one of the guys drove a bait threading rod up through his arm from wrist to elbow. Looong drive to the ER.
But great fellowship, some memorable ceviche, two delightful kids, Roger's superb cooking, lots of imported beers, and...sand in everything.
Be sure your chinese friend can attend though. I don't want no Mexicans prepping the sushi.
i'm sure he'll make it.
i'm going to check with my buddy, there are a couple big tournaments that time of yr don't want to go during one of those, too many people and the beach gets tore up pretty bad from all the traffic.
it will depend on driving conditions at the time. Sometimes it's easy driving and others it's hell even in a good 4x4. I pulled my 12 ft flat bed trailer down there once, won't do it again. Driving conditions that weren't great but not as bad as they can be. Best time is after some good rain storms that pack that sand down.
depends but usually somewhere around the thirty - forty mile marker, whereever we find a good cut in one of the sand bars. plus we'd be around halfway down the island and if anyone wanted to run up or down the beach looking for birds working it wouldn't be that far. usually around the cabo diablo area, not a long run to the Mansfield jetty's from there.
two days on the sand is about all i can take. i mentioned talcum powder because if you want to sleep its a life saver, just cover yourself with some and all the sand sheds off plus if you get baboon ass it helps.
Last time, I was completely dependent on the assistance of others because I flew in to San Antonio. Birdwatcher met me, drove me there and back, and even provided a tent for me to sleep in. Roger loaned me rods and tackle. Everybody else gave or provided something. I was humbled and grateful, but unable to reciprocate. It would be the same thing if I came this time, so perhaps I'd better not.

you'd always be welcomed. maybe i could find some cabrito for you.
ha i don't know what he thought when we went to the hood to help my buddy Albert get his rack up on his truck.. Albert's business has come a long way since then. https://www.facebook.com/HardLifesBaitandTackle/
I love PINS. It is such a magical place. We usually only go about 15 miles down. Just far enough to cut the crowds and find some solitude. It isn't usually much of a fishing trip for us, although we have caught some decent fish over the the years, more of an enjoy the beach and re-charge the mind sort of a trip. For the last few years we've made trips around memorial day, but this year we're going to the grand canyon and havasupai falls. I'll need to find another time to get my fix of PINS this year.

We will tent it. My wife is looking forward to it.

If you need a ride or a place to stay just let me know.
as for as rods and reels bring what you'd for catching bass catfish, freshwater gear will work fine for most reds and specks a medium heavy action rod with a spinning reel or baitcaster spooled with 12-20 lb line will work for most things. i'll have all the big rigs and tackle for the sharks.
You forgot to mention someone needs to bring a Special Edition Corpus Christi Scrabble board. You know, the one with only 16 squares on the board with only tiles with the letters C, B, H, R, S, T and I, A, E and O...
Roger. Let me know when you're planning on it. Would love to join if possible, and I'll bring my crowd of kids and wife. Ceviche will be made, and pisco sour too. On the house, or tent, or whatever. The older was 3 when we went and still recalls it.

Always good to have a Dr who can made Ceviche and help someone when they impale themselves.
Well, if ‘n I’m invited I still got a tent to loan out and room in my car for passengers.
Two days any time is doable, I much prefer the beach down here in the winter months, it’s actually pleasant out there, but I dunno when the fishing is best.
Roger, I am in for this trip. Looks like Sept based on latest post. Be there in March for nilgai and pigs near Port Mansfield. Any fishing that time of year? Pick dates so I can get it on calendar. Al

yes, fishing is good year round for the most part.
there is a tournament in sept. i'm going to check what the date is for that. don't want to go that weekend, would be to much traffic. that much traffic up and down the beach affects the fishing for the worse.
Roger, wife is up for the trip. I am speculating a Thur-Sunday trip?
Pending confirmation of dates and major events precluding it, we plan on making the kids skip school and join. We may need about 1/2 of beach to setup my large troop
It's a delightful troop. I thoroughly loved Lil Bit last time.
I don't think I'll make it this time. I swore a year or so ago that this old body would never spend another miserable night sleeping on the ground in a tent, and I think I'm going to honor my own vow.

Get a cot, sleep under the stars.... and bypass that senseless vow
LOL hell yeah, you can also carry a pistol down their if you have your ccl. i'm going to call my buddy Albert this evening he will know tournament dates so we can avoid that weekend. this is what i want to avoid. i've fished it twice, but if you're there to relax and have a good time with friends or family its not the weekend to go.
from what i've been able to find out, might be one tournament in sept. haven't found out a date , their web site has not been updated. no surf cats anymore. i'm pretty sure sharkathon is first week of oct. how does second week end of sept sound. i figure drive down the island early fri and head back sun. two nights on the sand is about my limit.....

Wife and son's birthday that week. Don't know if she would be up for getting sand everywhere. He wouldn't mind, as long as he gets a birthday party at some point. But you decide what is best, and I'll see if things line up. We better catch something besides hardheads and whiting, though whiting is pretty decent for ceviche, specks are much better
Just talked to my buddy Geoff Austin, he runs the Ruddy's BBQ redfish pro series tournaments and a couple others. He told me they are putting on a surf fishing tournament first week of august. Main venue the american bank center downtown will include a bad ass dinner and a Roger Creager concert. He said if we want we can have VIP tags. Captain meeting, dinner on thursday and fish fri/sat., awards prize money on sunday. he's going to get me all the details on mon. just an idea i'd thought i'd run by whoever decides to come down.
Roger, I gotta a Penn Battle 6000, but also looking at a conventional for some bigger/further fish. Will a 113H 4/0 work or should I look for a 6/0 instead as a more viable option. Not trying to win any world records on longest fights, or biggest fish on smallest reel. Just keeping it cheap and functional. Planning on spooling with 40-50lb Big Game or ANDE and maybe braid? 12/0 circles.

Pablo a 4/0 will work for everything but the the really big sharks. no problem catching a 100/200lb on it. I'd spool it with 100lb braid. you can get leader already made up at one of the tackle shops here or up there. Albert has a shop now for the last few yrs.
I have leaders. But making extra ones wouldn't be difficult. The husband of a nurse I work with also wraps and makes rods. Maybe I'll get the chance to wrap one myself, under his guidance. 6ft M/H rod? steel reel seat?
Guys here's the deal i just talked to my Buddy Brian who i went snapper fishing with, he said if we want he can take us out in the big boat for a 100-150 apiece basically enough to cover fuel and bait ect.
Roger, September is looking better, schedules came out and I will have some flexibility. Likely to come with family if that is the case. Separate question: which brand of tent/cot do you have? I remember it setup very easily.

i had a single person tent cot but rats in the storage unit i was renting chewed it up.
Roger, Any updates on dates and plans regarding the outing?
thanks for bringing this back up i was going to. it looks like i'm going to have to much work going on over the next 2-3 months. working on a office building and got a dental surgical clinic to start at the end of the month, that will take 5-6 weeks plus a 10,000 sft tile job on the island. probably have to put it off till spring or summer.
i can pull off a day trip offshore in my buddy's boat , we usually get a few of us together and pitch in a 150 each for fuel bait and stuff then run 30-50 miles out and fish all day.
