Standing at a sporting goods counter at a Walmart in Monrovia, CA. Called ahead to make sure they had stock of steel shot dove loads.
Keep in mind I just bought the last three boxes of this stuff day before yesterday at a different Walmart.
Show them my driver’s license, same one I showed at the other Wally, nope, you need a passport as well.
Argued with everyone up and down the line. Corporate policy, if your Ca DL doesn’t have the little bear logo, you need secondary proof of citizenship. Passport.
1). Wish they’d have mentioned this little detail when I called ahead and checked inventory,
2). Easier for an illegal to vote in this state than for a citizen to buy ammo.
I went proactive about 5 yrs ago and bought 35 cases of #8,7-1/2 and #6 dove loads. (lead)
There was some sabre rattling about phasing out lead shot.
Which isn't entirely germane to this conversation.
Did that as well a few years back, and now I have a bunch of lead I can't shoot at game in Cali. This state is now entirely lead-free for hunting. Be doing a lot more out-of-state trips the next few years.

About an hour ago I bought two 525 round count boxes of WW 22LR ammo for $18.95 each at a Texas WalMart.
The guy who checked me out put in some numbers for my birthday that the register asked for without asking me. I guess he looked at me and concluded that I was over 21.
We’re out as of next year once my wife retires. The only thing the leftist politicians here want from me is my hard earned tax dollars to spend on programs for illegal aliens! We have become cultural refugees from the state we were born and raised in!
I assume the little bear logo is the way CA is complying with the the Real ID Act, not having on your DL means the State of CA hasn't confirmed that you are who your DL says you are. I'm not sure why the Walmart you visited is taking issue with it, the new federal requirements don't go into effect until next year.
If you fly within the United States or enter secure federal buildings and military bases, you will need a valid passport or other federally approved document, such as a REAL ID driver license or identification card, beginning October 1, 2020.
CAL-DOJ has submitted emergency regulations, effective July 1, 2019 that all Firearm and Ammunition purchases will require the purchaser have a "Real ID" license or ID card.
ETA: there’s been some backpedaling by DOJ and now it appears the only licenses they will not accept are the ones marked federal limits apply.

I almost went to jail for messing with some numchucks on the beach near Redding in the 80's. They didn't care about the keg of beer we had tapped though.

When I worked at Cabela's, I would always enter Feb 31 1909 for every birthdate.
The most outrageous proposed regulation that has the chance to impact most California gun owners almost immediately is the state DOJ's insistence that only RealID-compliant driver's licenses are sufficient for the purchase of ammunition.
Michel & Associates, representing the National Rifle Association and the California Rifle & Pistol Association, has penned an exhaustive letter opposing the new regulations and pointing out that the RealID requirement is both a) contrary to federal rules on purchasing firearms and ammunition and b) only arguably necessary because of the state's own policy decisions with regard to issuing illegal aliens drivers licenses.

That's what I was thinking of while reading this thread. Just renewed my NY state drivers license back in Feb. and I upgraded to what NY state calls an "enhanced license". IIRC someday I may need that type license to get on a plane (?) or when I cross the border into Canada. I knew there were some other things that kick in someday in the future.

One of the many reasons I no longer hunt in Ca. I go out of state even for upland birds. F this state. Snowwolfe, you fund it, I'll move.
The Walmart’s here wanted to “walk” your handgun ammo and long guns up to the front of the store like your some fuggin criminal on a perp walk.
Never mind the fact that I’m packing a Legally Licensed and loaded handgun. 😡
Fugg Walmart.
I may pay just a little more at my LGS, but I like to support them and help keep them in business so I don’t HAVE TO GO TO WALMART.
Happened to me 20+years ago at a Wal-Mart. Bought two shotguns they didn't have boxes for so the manager and I, each with shotgun in hand, walked'em up to the front door. Twice the drama!

Rant off
I find it amusing that Kommiefornia issues a DL to every illegal PoS that darkens the door of the DMV, yet will require you have a passport or REAL ID for proof of citizenship when exercising a right other than voting. It's only going to get worse.
Y'all aren't getting any of your freedoms back without gunfire.

Headed for Idaho ?
Wyoming or Montana is a much better choice

I'm good with that. The condors as a species have failed to evolve and adapt. By nursing an inferior species along, we aren't doing Darwin any favors.
Walmart isn't the only retailer doing this. I tried to buy ammo at a Sportsman's Warehouse near me last night (northern California) and since I had the "federal limits apply" stamp on my DL, I was out of luck - needed a certified birth certificate or passport. They have a sign posted at the gun counter explaining the requirements. I tried my military ID (retired) and they would not accept that either. The guy behind the counter was very apologetic (we attend the same church so I know him fairly well) but his manager was there and they wouldn't do it. California sucks.
Bought several flats of 12,20 and 28 gauge non toxic for upland hunting and added some waterfowl ammo to my stock also. All to circumvent the clusterphuck beginning July. Still have 3 or 4 flats of lead ammo that i'll hunt other states with. Had several Bass Pro employees explaining how the law would affect buying ammo there after July 1. Obvious upper management didn't understand the law also.
Why any hunter or shooter would stay in California is beyond me
You are born here. You build your entire life with a woman here. You hunt and fish your ass off for decades while building a good home in the country while the majority of the state keeps shifting to the left. You wake up one day and realize that this is a hostile environment where you have zero voice. You are attacked for your core values, from the left but also the right because you are a Californian.. You now have grown kids and a wife that refuses to leave them because of your political beliefs. If you divorce the wife and move to your desired free state, the alimony will destroy you and you are crushed financially . That's why.
Salmonella, I've seen the pictures you have posted; you've harvested more and better quality fish and animals than at least 95 percent of the Campfire I'd say, and that's not an insult to anyone, it's just a testimony to the opportunities that you've taken advantage of. You live in a pretty great area even if it is "behind enemy lines". I live in CA for many of the same reasons you do - mainly because my wife does not want to leave, at least not yet. We came here on a military assignment and I've stayed way too long, but we do have plans to move out within the next 4-5 years. I can't wait. But in the meantime, there is a lot to enjoy here, in the outdoors. The politics suck, many of the people suck, but you have certainly made the most of it. That said, I do hope you get the chance to move to a more agreeable location soon. I grew up in Idaho, and much of it isn't the same as it was then, but it's still a pretty good place to be. Same with most of the mountain west.

Mmmmm thank you man. I struggle sometimes, but most would love to have what I do. It's a really weird position to be in. My wife has supported all of my budget busting hunts and crazy OCD over the top exuberance. She is beautiful and I would live a lonely life without her, so I live here on this fringe. Thanks man, your post made my day.
What if a citizen shots an illegal. Does it cancel out the vote?
You from Texarkana? I am from Atlanta. Not to be confused with those impostors from Georgia. Anyway, The big stores everywhere come up with silly crap. But Texas is still better.
Nore and more we are getting like Europe, pre-WW2, Need "documents" and "Papers" to satisfy the government, Why should a PASSPORT be required to make a purchase, or exercise any of our rights.
Driver';s license is not enough - that can be forged or faked, so can a passport. Next will be bar codes and implants . It's in Revelations I believe.

^^^^^^^^^This. Just a shame that the most beautiful state in the country is mostly overrun by morons.

Take your passport when you go out of state. You might need it to get back.

I think leaving a place JUST because of your political beliefs is nonsense. Now if said political climate PREVENTS you from exercising your political or anything else, then it is time to go or give in. That said, if your wife threatens divorce as a weapon, I have to tell you, I would have huge issues with that kind of threat. My wife for example, refuses to go to say, Montana because of the extreme weather and the fact she still has a family here in Florida (My folks are gone as of last year, but I also have lots of family in Florida), but let there be no mistake (and a lot of you here either know or know of my wife), if she were to every pull the "D" card because I wanted to move, let's just say it's kinda like combat, in that nobody ever knows how he'll react, but I'm here to tell you, that's one bell that if she chooses to ring, cannot be un-rung...
It's about amazing as hitting the lottery just to see a store clerk actually in the sporting goods dept. at the local Walmart stores, let alone one that's authorized to sell guns, ammo and licenses, even more so one who actually knows what they are doing.

I should be buying Lotto tickets, I guess. I simply walked up to the sporting goods counter in a local WM and asked for 22LR ammo and saw the 525 count boxes on a shelf in a behind-the-counter display case.
I normally don't shop at Walmart but I went in to see if they had any and their price if they did on the WW 525 round boxes of plated bullet 22LR. I had just left a local gun shop where the owner was now wanting $31.95 for the same box (He heard that there was going to be a rush on ammo and guns, I'm guessing)
Next week I'm going to be rich after I cash in my Lotto ticket........... Yippee...!!!!

I have a beautiful loving wife, nobody on this earth will care for me like she does....she has supported my frivolous, budget busting hunting and fishing but....she just absolutely refuses to leave her family and move to a place where she knows no one...it's the line in the sand.
I guess I'll say it............ I worked for a large oil company for almost 30 years and it provided me with an excellent source of income and benefits to care for my wife and family. The downside was that on occasion, you were asked to move to another part of the country.
Each of the four times that happened, my wife packed up and we joyfully moved our family. She is a very lovely lady also, and I'm glad that I found her and not someone who is tied to her family more than to our family. Our three kids are grown and married with families of their own, but my wife and I are still a family together.

Well said. Mine too. Our family is prioritized over hers, mine, and whatever. Me, her and the kids have made several 2000 mile moves for work. I got damn lucky, but didn't marry her by accident.
Back to the topic at hand, who could've believed all things firearm would have gotten so bad, even in Cali? Don't for one second believe it'll stop there.

As conservatives from the agricultural region of the Central Valley, our voices and values are now outnumbered by the liberal minded metropolitan populations and ignored by the leftist politicians. We have two children and our first granddaughter awaiting us in the free state of Oklahoma. We’re counting the days!
