Never been a fan of chaps but do like chinks when riding through the pines and tall junipers.
When I was a kid, there'd be these town guys (town being like 700 pop.) who were like, "Yeah, I wanna help hay. Lemme get my chaps and hay hooks. I only do it to keep in shape for football."
I'm thinkin', the only guys on our crew who have hooks are the oldsters who use the good ones and "use" means they keep it on the tractor with them so nobody else can score it. Me and the other kids who actually haul the hay are stuck with the old junk hooks, one apiece. Chaps? Wtf? We're in jeans with holes all ripped in them that cactus and locust thorns stick through easily along with wore-out white t-shirts. I only hay because my Dad will kick my ass if I don't.
I wear waterproof ranch boots most of the time, they are comfortable and practical. Wrangler jeans and carhart shirts, some without holes even. If people have a problem with it they just don’t understand fashion.

Think our dads were a lot alike. I got volunteered on a custom hay crew when my older brother decided it looked like a good way to make money. I was 7th grade and maybe 110 lbs. I had hauled since I was big enough to move one end of a bale, but custom hauling was another thing entirely.
As for "western" dress, I wore the boots until my mid 30s when they started causing trouble with my feet. Boots, jeans, and a jean jacket still feels like home to me.
I had a pullover lace to the neck real buckskin shirt as a kid, Got it as a hand me down from an older cousin whose dad had been friends with some real old west types when he was a boy. I think I wore it out. Kinda like the one above without fringe
I had to give up boots this year. No support and I developed that Plantar Fascitus ( sp) in my heels.I am 76 and have worn wrangler since I was in Junior high .Shirts with snaps on and two pockets a until they went to $40 each although I did just find two flannel snap front shirts for $13each.I can't remember not wearing either straw or felt hat a with 4 " brim and 4 inch crown. Around here, it's not western clothing, it is just what we wear.
Cowboy Cut Wranglers, Redwing Pecos work boots, and a Carhartt pocket T-shirt most days.
If I “dress up” , I’ve got a pair of Leddy’s custom made elephant hide cowboy boots with 17” tops I had made about 20 years ago. and a Wrangler button down shirt, or maybe a Columbia button down fishing shirt.
Got lots of Tony Lama Cowboy boots I rarely wear any more because the old leather soles are too damn slick.
The older I get, the more I like square toed cowboy boots with a rubber or vibram sole. Hated them when they first came out but they are damn comfortable. Hard to beat Redwing pull on work boots for comfort. 🤠
I'm like a chick when it comes to shoes aka boots.
Of the +dozen pair about 1/3 are cowboy boots.
One pair for riding and rest are all rubber soled walking heels. Square toe mofo.
Other than a couple woman folk I swear everyone I know wears cowboy boots.
I've got a couple pair of cowboy boots for dress occasions. Other than that I'm in tennis shoes 'cause they're a lot warmer or rubber boots in the winter when there's mud all over or snow. Boots are too hot when I can ride around in the tractor or pickup in tennis shoes or do mechanic work in the shed the same way. If I was working for some big corporation and had to have steel-toed boots or get fired for safety violations I'd do so then. Working for myself it's just easier to not drop shixt on my feet. I don't even own a pair of shoes other than cowboy boots or tennis shoes.
ten gallon hat. check Wranglers. check brushpopper shirt. check pointy-toed boots. check spurs. check assless chaps. check
but now I'm like ol' Fieldgrade.Redwing pecos wellingtons
I think I've always been "ol' Fieldgrade" Don.
Even when we had horses I wore the same ol' Wranglers and the low heeled round toe Roper/Wellington style for riding.........Red Wings for work.......like I said.....I weren't no cowbow.
I went to a cutting show in Central Cal last week and was the only one there in shorts and a T-shirt. My wife made me wear jeans and my chit kickers. They are literally chit kickers. Ariat boots that I do yard work and projects in during cold weather. I still wore a T-shirt though. I enjoyed the show but am not really into the dress up part. Heading to Tulsa in October and she wants me to dress the part. I think I am going to buy the biggest sombrero I can find and spring them on that.
Every day. Cowboy cut Wranglers, though I'm liking mwz 47's lately. Ariat and Twisted X boots. Resistol hat's, but honestly most days it is a ball cap. I own chaps and chinks, but rarely wear either one. Spurs when I ride, which is several days a week.
I would rather get a pineapple kicked up my azz than spend much time on a horse. But I spent about 2 hours this evening coming out of the hills [very steep hills] North of Riggins,Id. in a pretty lively rain and was happy to be wearing a good custom lid. Those old boys who spent their lives outdoors knew how pick a hat. I wore Wranglers to dinner after getting dried out but not in the rain.
I tell my uncle if hes gonna wear cowboy boots in public hes gotta walk 10 steps behind me so people don't think we are together. Cowboy boots in modern times are for chicks and dudes light in the loafers. My 2 cents
Got one snap-button Pendleton I wear around the house in cold weather because it's easy on and off. Anything more would be cultural appropriation. I have a deal with the horses: I stay off their backs, and in return they won't kill me. A horse killed Superman you know.
Now wool; I got me some wool stuff; Filson, Pendleton, Bemidji, Stormy Kromer, military surplus from around the world.......
I wear Wrangler jeans. Around the farm everyday I wear Justin waterproof work boots. Go to town boots are Ariats, and Sunday boots are Jusitn cowboy boots. Hunting boots are Mucks.

And he's back there pointing out his Dumbass nephew to everybody …..

No kidding, Okie! Might be it takes a man to wear boots when everybody else is clopping around in girly shoes and "mom" jeans or whatever in hell all the sheep are wearing now days
These people that wear tennis shoe/sandals, and ball caps ,don't get out enough to get the top of their ears sunburned or working dust, stickers and places where seeds and crud get into their socks if they don't wear boots. It's not fashion, it's practicality and function
I can’t wear traditional pull on cowboy boots anymore. So it’s either my Redwing Iron Rangers or Merrill pull on’s , both supplied with Plantar Facitius (sic) inserts. The inserts help me beaucoup!!!!

When I was younger, I had a lot of trouble with my feet because of that, and quit wearing cowboy boots for a long time. As I got older, I got too lazy to have to tie and retie my boots every time I came in and out of the house. I went back to wearing the Western style work boots, and my feet do not bother me one bit. Must have outgrown it.
Have a pair of boots for dress up purposes. Don't have the need to ride anymore. But when I do it is Wilson boots with a good underslung heel and oxbow stirrups. Sometimes Whites but not a fan of riding a lot with a lace boot.
Was in argentina years ago to participate in a cattle performance program. A number of ranchers from Montana went along. While I was working in my hotel room on my presentation, those guys were out dicking around in BA. A guy ran up from behind and stopped them because they were wearing cowboy hats, not something commonly seen in BA. Turns out it was Robert Duvall. He had recently hooked up with a beautiful Argentine woman and spent a lot of time down there.
I wear cowboy boots most all the time, I like western sports coats, and suits. I like a bolo tie at times. How about you good folks?
long time ago, when i was playing county mountie, cowboy boots were commonly worn. horrible to run in, and i switched to hiking boots. still got a pair or two of boots, but a real high arch prevents me from wearing them. one real problem with most bolo ties. they are a small rope around your neck, somebody grabs the tie, they got you. so the S.O. had this sheriff's department logo on the ties, but they were breakaway ties, somebody grabs it, they just fall off. long time ago i had a five beaver stetson on, walked into the store my wife was working in, and this recent transplant from new york thought it a good idea to knock that hat off. I was half way over the counter to get him, when my wife grabbed me. flatlanders
I've got multiple pairs of cowboy boots, but don't play cowboy much anymore. Day in, day out, I primarily wear my Thorogood moc toe lace ups.
The company I work for has a Taj Mahal of a corporate office 4 states from where I live.. Full on dress code, slacks, dress shoes, button up shirt etc. Cowboy boots are specifically forbidden in the handbook. I was up there a couple months ago, specifically wore Wranglers and a pair of ostrich skin boots and a pearl snap shirt. Nothing ratty, just not in policy. My boss who is officed there, and a great guy, just laughed at me when I walked in his office.

It takes a man to wear boots? Wow, that's a new one to me! I've spent enough time on a horse to understand the utility of a good cowboy boot, but most of the guys wearing them out here aren't getting anywhere near a horse. I have nothing against them or other western dress, wear whatever suits you, but to think that it somehow makes somebody "manly" because they have wear boots or a cowboy hat is a bit of a stretch.
Never really thought about it, but I guess so, I just wear the clothes my wife gets me. Boots however I have a messed up foot from a break behind the big toe that never grew back together right and looks like a giant bunion. The only thing I can wear are the double H square toes, and the Muck boots, I tired a pair of hiking shoes a couple years ago and blew out the side in less then a week. Nevermind my foot hurt like hell that week.
Think you need to read again, and don't forget to get the context. In other words, to wear cowboy boots in some areas where it might be considered "gay" someone might need to be a little tougher (Or have a good sense of humor).
If I see someone in city clothes, I know sure as rip they didn't show up to work. Boots, are essential here, heavy , durable pants, long sleeve shirt and a felt or straw hat. A ball cap for tight spots while working.A knife is essential. I don't ride without chinks or shotgun chaps. This isn't fashion, folks it is mostly tools of the trade- except for a good long silk neckerchief, it can be both pretty and useful. Just don't tell anyone their pretty , they would box your nose ( noticed the left handed heeler- not to common)

I read that Duvall is or was really into Tango. In fact, I saw him in an interview where he talked about his obsession with that type of dance.
70's silk pearl snaps with a bolo tie. Life long friend and neighbor of the family wore that type of stuff. Cousin Jerry, KKYX. God bless him and everything he did for GOOD country music. Long live Jerry King.
Have a pair of black cockroach killers, and a pair of elephant skins. Neither fit anymore.
Work boots, 2 pair of leather Crocs, one pair of church shoes. That's all I own. The second pair of crocs was my fashion consultants idea. The 2+ year old pair looked bad, she said.
I wear those things so much in the summer my feet look weird. Snow white, with dark tanned spots and streaks where the holes are.
Jeans when it's cold or I need the protection. The hat is out of place here, mostly. I have worn a breezer and had a leather type to shed rain. Only worn when needed.
Have been pondering a hat of some sort for next summer.
A good friend had a round of melanoma, scary stuff now that I'm getting some gray hair, and have started to grow things on my skin that dont belong. I noticed how brown the inside of my ears are, that got me to thinking...
Chlinstructor, I worked years in Downtown Cow Town. W.L. Leddy’s Ranchwear was and is The Real Deal. They speak Western! Especially to us cowboys. Great place.
Never got the “western” look. Mother of pearl buttons, big belt buckles and conchos; heavily tooled leather belts and tight jeans? I just don’t understand.
I much prefer those short black sparkly cocktail dresses........................on my wimmins.
Haven't been on a horse for a million years it seems, and even then it was only when we visited our country cousins.
As one of the 70's long haired generation, we culturally appropriated "western" dress and Native American dress like bandanas to keep the hair out of our eyes. (Just don't wear on cholo style in the wrong neighborhood )
Started wearing "cowboy" boots when I was kid, round toe as I have peasant feet. Pointy toes would make my feet look like a size 18 in order to fit my size 10.5 feet. My dress up shoes nowadays, and for at least the last 50 years, have been pull on boots, presently a pair of Justin (USA made) work boots. Have never been able to afford custom boots, or I'd have a nice pair made.
Have a few western hats too, couple for work, couple for dress up. Might still be able to fit in a "western" sport coat I got for my little sister's wedding 23 years or so ago.
Can't stand "candy ass monkey suits", so no friggen wing tips, and double breasted stuff for me.
Daily wear is usually a pair of short/long Wrangler Riggs Ranger pants depending on weather and type of work to be done. Pocket T shirt, sometimes a "dickies" denim shirt if needed for some sort of protection. Daily shoes are none or sandals, unless working on something requiring real foot wear, then it's usually a pair of romeos without socks, unless it's REALLY work, then I have socks and multiple pull on or lace up boots. For a guy who hates wearing anything on his feet I sure have a lot of footwear. Ball cap, fedora or a "cowboy" hat is de rigueur. Bandana around neck if really sunny or mosquitoes are an issue. Might have to get me one of them silk ones someday.
Next time I go shopping with my wife, I'll check and see if she can find me a Western Dress.
Geno
PS, captured a runaway horse when barefooted once. It got away from some gal down by the river in the town we lived in and was crossing the bridge heading back to the barn. Gal was sure thankful.

He was.
He made a movie called Assassination Tango about an American going to BA to assassinate a nazi. His wife is the female lead. Beautiful Argentine woman. Duvall spent a lot of time in Argentina. Don't know if he still does.
