For you folks that have access to these stores, what do you think of them?
Dicks is selling the local Field & Stream store to them. so hoping for an improvement.
There are several in my AO, and I have a favorable impression of Sportsmens Warehouse.
They are way better than Dicks but not as good as Scheels. Just my 2 cents.
Poor Dick’s, I feel bad for them!
my closest is 2 hrs away in Provo Utah
I may stop in there if close by......prices are retail high of course.....
When I need guns...reloading components etc......I buy online
They all may change their customer gun handling after this incident

Haven't had them here for eight years or so, but what they were then sure beats the hell outa what Cabela's is now.
I miss the one we had near us. Great place or reloading supplies and ammo. Was not an academy type place and was built with guys like us in mind I always thought.
I've never been in a Field & Stream, just Dicks many years ago. Sportsman's Warehouse is so far above a Dick's they're not even in the same league, not even the same sport.
We used to have a Sportsman's in NW Arkansas, but they closed during their bankruptcy several years back.
I go to one in Logan, Utah quite often. Haven't bought a ton of stuff, mostly clothes, but they've got plenty of quality hunting and fishing items to look at, versus sitting in my hotel.
Love Sportsman's Warehouse. Went to Cabelas a month ago to pick up some cleaning patches, something I've bought there in years past. This time they had two small packets of patches, I believe they were for cleaning AR's. I walked out and went to Sportsman's Warehouse the next day. Plenty of bags of cleaning patches on the shelf in all sizes.
I know that these stores make more money on clothing than on cleaning patches, but if you don't have the small stuff I'm not going to come back to look at the clothing. Cabelas needs to learn that lesson - all over again.
I went into a Dick's Sporting Goods one time, years ago, because I'd never seen their merchandise and it happened to be next door to a place my wife wanted to shop. I got the impression t by at it was just a soccer ball shop and never even thought about going back. I think they closed that one up.
They're building a Rural King about an hour and a half away from us. Wife really wants to go for the grand opening. Cabelas is really close to their new location so curious to see how that affects them.
I prefer SW over Cabela's or Bass Pro but there is still room for improvement.
I patronize our local one quite a bit. You can find cheaper prices on line and for large purchases that's worth it but for little onsie-twosie stuff - box of bullets for reloading, brick of primers, etc. - where the difference is only going to be a buck or two it's just as easy to drive there and buy it. They give a 5% military/veteran discount so by the time you add in shipping sometimes it's a wash or Sportsman's actually comes out cheaper. They also have a good selection of outdoor clothing and shoes plus lots of archery, fishing and camping equipment.
Bottom line is I'm very glad to have them in the area.
Sportsmans is pretty good. like an online store where you can handle the stuff. lots of chinese made stuff like anywhere. same as online. prices a little bit higher than online, sales tax vs shipping.
seemed like they priced their powder right at online price plus hazmat plus shipping (for an 8 pound keg)
But they do have sales sometimes, or some discounted items make it worth paying attention.
I usually go in if I'm on that side of town.
For guns and accessories...Cabela's, BPS, Scheel's, Gander Mountain, Sportsman's, Academy, Dick's, Sports Authority
Some of these may be completely out of business or divested of gun stuff. Sport's Authority, Gander and Sportsman's are all gone from around here. Dick's is boycotted because of their waffling and outright hostility to gun folks. Cabela's is owned by BPS now. At one time, they were all within driving distance and all selling guns.
There’s one near me, 150 miles. We’ve been there several times, and think that they’re pretty good. Certainly better than today’s Cabela’s.
Oh, what’s a Dick’s?
memtb
Much better than Gander, Bass Pro, Dick's, etc.
Not quite as good as Scheels.
But they sell nice Tikkas!
Sportsmans is the only large, full service outdoor store here. There's a Dicks but you all know what they're like. There are other stores that carry some things but Sportsmans has about everything I need.
As others have mentioned the prices are high. The store are well stocked and the product variety is good. They have more reloading supplies than most places that sell it. You can find some good gun deals from time to time.
I have stopped in one in Southaven ,MS a few times. Seems like a better store than BPS. I always found something to buy. Had a decent selection of reloading supplies I wanted when they were hard to find.
Sw is overpriced but has a good selection. I prefer scheels but they are expensive as well. Dicks is a joke.
The Sportsmans Whse. in Lex. probably has more inventory than the average size Cabelas, before Bass Pro stripped them out. Great selection of outdoor shoes/boots, awesome reloading inventory with reasonable powder prices. Any kind of hunting, and for local fishing, they've got it covered. Haven't seen a golf club or a tennis racket in the store.
I don't rally pay much attention to their big gun inventory as I'm price spoiled by Bud's being a few blocks away, Centerfire Systems in an adjoining town & Ky. Gun Co. just 45 minutes past that.
But I do like SW.
Sportsmans also sells online. Search their website. If you request delivery to one of their stores, shipping's free. I've found some good prices online. It won't be overnight like Amazon but they get freight once a week and it'll usually be there on the next truck.
I stopped at a Dick's sporting goods yesterday just to see what they changed. There are NO hunting or even fishing items there. The old guns & fishing section is now coolers, balls for various sports and lots & lots of golfing supplies. I hope the dumb bastards go belly-up soon.
Haven't had them here for eight years or so, but what they were then sure beats the hell outa what Cabela's is now.
I agree, I prefer them over cabelas and bass pro these days.
There are two sizes of stores now for SW. Our local store is about 1/3 the size of the one in Lewiston Id. I shop in the Lewiston store when ever I am up there. Our local one is OK but very small. I really like the North 40 store in Lewiston, that is a must stop for us.
I like them.
All of the good and bad points have already been mentioned.
I would just like to add that they support my Sportsmen's Club with discounts for supplies for our annual kid's camp. Cabela's didn't do that, even back before BPS bought them.
I like sportsmans. Far better than any other chain shop IMO.
I like the one here. Decent prices on guns. Great selection on guns, ammo, reloading. Gun counter guys are typical box store gun counter guys.
If there was something to dislike about it, I guess it would be there are no used firearms.
Sw is overpriced but has a good selection. I prefer scheels but they are expensive as well. Dicks is a joke.
+1. If you have seen one SW you have seen them all. They all are laid out the same and have the same inventory. About 10 years ago they ran off all the small mom and pop shops so they are now about the only game in town. One other thing that kind of sucks is that they do not deal in used guns. No trades, etc - only new.
SW has a better selection of hunting and fishing stuff without all the other crap BPS/Cabelas has. Prices are sometimes a couple bucks cheaper than Cowbellers and they still give the 5% mil/vet discount on ammo and components which Cabelas does not. SW donates merchandise to our RMEF banquets and Cabelas BPS stopped. I don’t buy schit at Cabelas unless I can’t find it elsewhere. Most shooting stuff I get on sale at SW or pay retail at my local gun shop since it is 20 miles closer. It takes me almost 3 gallons of gas to round trip to Cabelas or SW so for small purchases it’s a no brainer.

Yes, I like North 40 Outfitters too. The one in Ponderay, ID has a better selection of outdoor gear than the Colville, WA.
Happy Trails
Nearest one is 2 hr drive away. But it's basically the only game in town for shooting supplies. Our local Ace Hdwr carries some stuff, but very limited inventory. Couple of smaller shops in the town the Sportsman's is in, sometimes go to them too.
From what I've seen, they have decent sale prices on certain firearms. A large selection of reloading components as has been mentioned, which is nice in my neck of the woods. I go to that town occasionally and can stop in and pick up a few items I need while there. Have bought shoes/boots/sandals there for myself and wife, as we don't like buying them online.
Maybe they're watching this thread and using it as a customer satisfaction survey?
Geno
I will throw this one out also as competition to SW. Murdoch's, been to several of them in Montana and have a very good selection of outdoor stuff and prices are average.
I like the one here. Decent prices on guns. Great selection on guns, ammo, reloading. Gun counter guys are typical box store gun counter guys.
If there was something to dislike about it, I guess it would be there are no used firearms.
I was talking to the gun counter guy last Spring at the Milpitas store and asked him about selling used guns. His response is that corporate was thinking about adding a used gun section in the future. I hope they follow thru with that.
I won't step into a Field and Stream, Dicks anymore so a new store is welcome. Our local Gander Mountains are closing as of a month ago

Pretty much my impression of the only Dick's I've ben in - in Denver 2 years ago. Noting to see here, move along folks.
We have a SW here in Soldotna. One in Anchorage too. Not bad stores- lots of stuff, retail pricing of course. I think both are better than the Anchorage Cabelas, or for that matter, the Bass Pro stores I've been in here and there.
Here in LV it's SW or BPS and I don't go to BPS. The SW near me is outstanding in their customer service. Any time I have asked about an item the staff has walked me to the item or to someone who knew more. I also like their Elk summer sausage.

There's a Sportsman's Warehouse about 3 miles from my house, and a Scheel's about 130 miles away. I still go to Scheel's when I'm going to stock up on lots of things, but for getting some ammo, fishing equipment or the like, the SW is just fine. Service is sorta hit or miss, but I usually go in knowing what I want so that's not an issue for me. The thing I really like about the SW near me is that they have a ton of reloading equipment, at decent prices. In fact, I think they have a better selection of powder and components than the Scheel's I go to. Dick's isn't a sporting goods store, so I don't even consider them to be in the same league.
Edit: I saw someone else mention Murdoch's....while the ones near me (Bozeman) don't have the variety of things that a SW has, I actually prefer shopping at Murdoch's and got a very good deal on a Ruger 22/45 last year, way lower than anywhere else (even online sources). Plus, they have all sorts of other stuff I usually shop for, from hardware to things like salt licks. I just wish they had more selection.
I agree with all of the above regarding SW. Much better than Cabelas.
We had a Sportsmans Warehouse over in Las Cruces (about 150 miles away) and there is one in Tucson, about the same distance in the opposite direction. We shop in Las Cruces, so having SW there was convenient. However, the one in Las Cruces shut down during the bankruptcy process and we were without one for several years. I will tell you--I really missed them.
They opened a new one in Las Cruces a few years ago, after they regained their financial footing, but it is one of the "down-sized" versions. I am glad to have it, but I still miss the old, full-sized store.
I probably go to Tucson 4-6 times in an average year, and I always hit the SW there, as the stock for just about everything is much broader than the smaller store in Las Cruces.
There is also now a Cabelas in El Paso (also about 150 miles away), but it, too, is a down-sized version of a "real" Cabelas store. Since we rarely shop for anything in El Paso, I may hit it once a year or so and I am always disappointed.
Just wish to hell that there was a Scheels somewhere south of the frozen north...
Sportsman Warehouse is way over priced IMO. I can buy 12 gauge shotshells way cheaper at WallyWorld. I shot a lot of trap---it makes a difference.
They are way better than Dicks but not as good as Scheels. Just my 2 cents.
Our Sportsman's has better prices than Scheels but it's not as nice of a store. I don't buy golf clubs or tennis shoes anyway.

I shoot a lot of sporting clays each winter after the rifle seasons shut down and shotgun shells are the only ammo that I buy. I confess that I do buy all of my shotgun shells from Wally World. However, I hand load for all my rifles and a few rifles belonging to my daughter and grandchildren, and SW has powder and components at reasonable prices, not to mention other outdoor gear and clothes that I can handle and/or try on before I buy.
I have been a Sportsmans for years.
I've had a decent run with them, especially out West when I'm traveling.
I agree with the pricing comments, but it's handy for a one-and-done purchase when needed.

I like them.
Prices are not lowest, but decent. The places I've found with lower prices generally have no selection. It costs money to have a variety of product on the shelf.
The staff actually seem to use the products. The people in the gun department are shooters. The people in fishing fish. The people in camping and hiking hike and camp. More than that, the staff seems to have a .. wholesomeness? .. not sure what else to call it. The kids are solid, not snowflakes. The older folks seem like you'd find 'em sittin' on a hay bale or at a bbq ... with meat, not tofu. Flannel, not polyester. Hard to explain. Just .. they're .. us. My kind of peeps. I like supporting a business that supports such people.

I have found the same with the employees at our local store. Once I was given a 10% discount simply because I was wearing a MAGA hat.
I have no use for the people at Cabelas.
Sportsmans Warehouse opened a store in my area a couple of years ago. Before that, I had to drive to Colo. Spgs. to their store, for bullets, ammo, powder, etc., now all of it is available just a few miles away! This store has been a real godsend for our area.

Good job buying shells from a company that is trying to sell off your rights.
https://www.thetruthaboutguns.com/w...sponsible-firearms-retailer-partnership/
if I buy retail stuff I probably spend the most on it at SW. Cabelas, since bass pro took over I really don't have any interest in going there. sportsmans has taken a different approach. They are building smaller stores in more areas. I think its a great strategy. They are focusing on things people need right then. They are very dialed into what customers want in my area. Cabelas used to get me in there because they would offer something at a great deal to get me into the store. They don't do that anymore plus they raised their prices. sportsmans has OK prices and when I need something they are most likely to get my business.
add me to the good job list too, just bought a 2 man Field and Stream stand for me and my boys. Of all the ladder stands I've bought over the years, its without a doubt the most comfortable, easiest to put together, well thought out and designed one I've come across. I will continue to buy them as needed as long as they are being made like they are now.
and I did recently buy a $124 dollar remington 1187 20ga from walmart.
I buy my underwear there. Guess that's bad too.
By far my favorite large sporting good store...they blow away cabelas bass pro and scheels ....
Wish I had one around here..
good luck with that...stand alone retail has been closing up, and the trend is accelerating
I like sportsman's warehouse! I like it better than Cabela's or the defunct Gander Mountain. Also prefer it to Bass Pro shops.
I’ve bought a lot of stuff from them, no complaints.
I really liked the one we had here, but IMHO they put it in a poor location, it closed with a lot of others some years ago.
Then they put a Cabelas in across the highway, guess how that is turning out.
In my area decent sporting goods stores are few and far between.
When a SW opened up I was skeptical it was going to be another Dicks type of affair. I was pleasantly surprised by the inventory..very well stocked with high quality goods. In fact had a few NF on clearance I’ve been eyeballing
I like ours. Their prices are higher than some stores, but better than Cabelas etc. They have decent gear and some of their sales are pretty good. They also price match any other prices and beat them by 5% if they are advertised, I think even online? They do not carry used guns, which is a disappointment to me because that is one of my favorite things.
sportsmans just had a flier in the wednesday paper. some stuff on sale.
https://www.sportsmans.com/storeflyer and input the zip code of your closest store.
they are not showing the current one for flagstaff, maybe they wait until tomorrow when it kicks in.
Haven't had them here for eight years or so, but what they were then sure beats the hell outa what Cabela's is now.
I agree, I prefer them over cabelas and bass pro these days.
Same here, they closed our store in 2008. A little pricey , but they had inventory, And the guys who worked there were hunters and fishermen that knew their stuff. I have emailed corporate a few times asking them to come back. Not another outdoor store 100 miles from me but Dicks and their worthless

Wonder if it is all F&S?
Story is the one in Altoona Pa. Is going to become a Sportsmans also.
Yippee!
F Dicks, and their Schiddty Field and Stream!
I prefer Sportsmans to Cabelas and Scheels, but sometimes I still visit Scheels.
Cabelas, not so much.

The one in Little Washington was mentioned in the article as well.
Its the only box store I’ve been able to assemble a rifle, scope, mounts, and sling.
They were doing well until the owner cheated on his wife, maybe they slowly come back
I've never been in a Field & Stream, just Dicks many years ago. Sportsman's Warehouse is so far above a Dick's they're not even in the same league, not even the same sport.
+1
Went to one Wednesday great store too bad it is a 200+ mile drive to it
Luckily i was on work time since we have a site nearby that needed a wireless network upgrade/repair.
Joke at work is I drive 7 hours round trip for a 20 minute repair than 2 hours at Sportsman Warehouse
They were pretty good until Cabela's came to town, but ever since Bass Pro bought out Cabela's I've been hoping they come back. SW is better than Dicks and Scheels

Agreed here 100% and excited to be able to go into that store again!
Where are you at gunchamp?
Bedford, here.
I like Scheel's better but Sportsman's is ok.
I’ve been a big fan since I visited the first one in UT. Since relocating to NY, I’ve been pleading with Corporate to open stores here. Hoping Field & Stream closings make it happen. Since Gander shut down, our only option have been very long drives to a small Bass Pro.
The Sportsmans Warehouse in Chattanooga, TN is very good. The employees are friendly and helpful.

Agree totally. They run a good store and their employees are more knowledgeable than average. I buy most of my powder there and often get bullets too.

There is one in Chattanooga, about an hour north of me. I really like the store and go in there anytime I'm in the area. This particular store always has a good supply of reloading gear and a very well stocked firearms display. I like them a LOT more than Dicks, even better than Cabelas. Living in GA I can't buy handguns there, and while their prices on guns are good, I've only bought one. In GA my carry permit allows me to skip the background check. If I buy in TN it is a $10 fee, plus sales tax is considerably more which eats up the savings.
