SAN FRANCISCO – Fix global warming or cook dinner on a gas stove?

That’s the choice for people in 13 cities and one county in California that have enacted new zoning codes encouraging or requiring all-electric new construction.

The codes, most of them passed since June, are meant to keep builders from running natural gas lines to new homes and apartments, with an eye toward creating fewer legacy gas hookups as the nation shifts to carbon-neutral energy sources.

For proponents, it's a change that must be made to fight climate change. For natural gas companies, it's a threat to their existence. And for some cooks who love to prepare food with flame, it's an unthinkable loss.

Natural gas is a fossil fuel, mostly methane, and produces 33% of U.S. carbon dioxide emissions from electricity generation, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. Carbon dioxide is the primary greenhouse gas causing climate change.

“There’s no pathway to stabilizing the climate without phasing gas out of our homes and buildings. This is a must-do for the climate and a livable planet,” said Rachel Golden of the Sierra Club’s building electrification campaign.

These new building codes come as local governments work to speed the transition from natural gas and other fossil fuels and toward the use of electricity from renewables, said Robert Jackson, a professor of energy and the environment at Stanford University in Palo Alto, California.

“Every house, every high-rise that’s built with gas, may be in place for decades. We’re establishing infrastructure that may be in place for 50 years,” he said.

These "reach" or "stretch" building codes, as they are known, have so far all been passed in California. The first was in Berkeley in July, then more in Northern California and recently Santa Monica in Southern California. Other cities in Massachusetts, Oregon and Washington state are contemplating them, according to the Sierra Club.

Some of the cities ban natural gas hookups to new construction. Others offer builders incentives if they go all-electric, much the same as they might get to take up more space on a lot if a house is extra energy-efficient. In April, Sunnyvale, a town in Silicon Valley, changed its building code to offer a density bonus to all-electric developments.

No more gas stoves?
The building codes apply only to new construction beginning in 2020, so they aren’t an issue for anyone in an already-built home.

Probably the biggest stumbling block for most pondering an all-electric home is the prospect of not having a gas stove.
This is coming from a state has been shutting off electricity to thousands of customers for months.

This should be a real money saver huh ?
I guess a smart perso would need a diesel generatir
Those people out there are nuts!
from the article:

"The building codes apply only to new construction beginning in 2020, so they aren’t an issue for anyone in an already-built home."

They'll get around to eliminating the existing gas appliances soon after passing this legislation
Coming soon to CA- registration of generators and BBQ tanks, followed by confiscation.

A precedent was set with bump stocks that will be applied to whatever is considered to be the next evil.

Oh sure. Carbon tax on all new gas appliances to double their cost. Idiots.
If our country would shut down anything powered by fossil fuels in any way, the general public would have all the idiot's heads on a pike by the end of that experiment.

Includes elec. generated by coal, & NG...

People don't have a clue.

Their grocery shelves would be empty in hours, all grids would be down, pretty much instant regression by 200 years.

All their emotion fueled ideas would die with them.
A more effective path to reducing CO2 emissions would be to reduce the planet's population by 80%, give or take a little.

Got fleas?
Well, I have 3 bbq's, one gas, one charcoal, one electric so I'm covered that way.

Just installed a high $ professional-grade domestic gas stove after years of hatefully using one of those crappy flat-top electric ranges. For that reason, they can go flagellate themselves.
First bump stocks next rubber bands.

All liberals would be a good start on that experiment.... laugh

But in order for one to believe that getting rid of mankind would change anything related to the earth, weather, warming or cooling by any significant amount, you would be a card carrying member of the global warming religion...

I don't believe that BS. Not in the least.
They are insane. Natural gas is a very clean form of energy. We are the Saudi Arabia of natural gas, and we have enough to last us for 200 years, if we used natural gas and nothing else for energy. It is clean burning.
And they demand electric only, where do they think the electicity comes from, at night when there is no wind. Either coal or nuke, and libs hate nuke.

My state is really backwards. We have a huge coal fired electric plant in Asheville NC, next year, they are going to switch it over to natural gas.

I got a problem with their theories as well.
I have an electric stove.

Its probably from the 70's.

In no hurry to replace it....but it did die I would go with gas.

The is sure a difference!

Go for it California! We will start farming wind up here and seriously cash in!

I'm telling you. It all started when the SCOTUS said you can't lock up crazy people.

Hell, I don’t either, but I could fake it, if it meant eradicating f’ing GD liberals...
Let them cook or heat on solar panels. Shipping out the welfare state in every urban hub would be a much better plan.
Yes they can't get any crazier.
California has the HIGHEST ELECTRIC rates in the nation and going up.
Do they have any clue as to where electricity comes from? GD
Maybe they will outlaw breathing next. That should cure most of their carbon issues.

And they'll likely also raise taxes substantially to pay for the fires caused by the power plants that burn coal or natural gas to make the electricity they require that all homes have to prevent the climate changes that have never happened as predicted and probably never will because they don't give two hoots and a hollar about climate change anyway, just socialism so they can steal everyone's wealth and property for themselves. And nobody has the guts to do what needs done with these creatures.

Them first. Like now.

Of course they do. From the outlets in the wall. Just like food comes from the grocery store.
Man-made climate change is a scam.
Over the last few decades my electricity has gone out many times. We have gone to propane so we can heat our home and cook our food because of this. Maybe in California they don't have to worry as much about -0 figures, but when you have been without power for several days at low temps gas looks like the way to go.
When we redid the family room downstairs, we put in a gas fireplace to complement/backup the NG furnace. With battery power backup, the fireplace will keep the house going for. couple days, we were told. If and when we ever put in a backup generator, we are golden.

We would have preferred wood fireplace , but direct vent was the only way we could go without adding 10K or so to cost for a chimney chase, and major reuild of that end of the house.

I really do have to give away or sell that 6-8 cords of mostly freedry wood in the yard... We use the fireplace enough that our bill has jumped noticably. And yes, our hot water heater and range are also gas, as is th slab-heated garage.

Here in Alaska, many of us appreciate "climate change", with our warmer temp recently.

When the climate change swings the other way (it will, you know) , what will be the globalist elite's "reasoning" then? Not that I expect to be around to see it. Perhaps no one will.

Earth Abides!
Well I read NASA is saying we are in for 30 years of cooling. Over the past 2 winters and the beginning of this one maybe they are right this time.

Nope.

We're going all raw and vegan here..............no need to cook ever again.

Broccoli rules!!!

So, yeah, just standby and watch it happen. But bitch now because afterwards bitching will bring death.

Jim,

do like the wheat farmers in E WA. Lease out the areas for the pads and keep farming under them turbines. Them farmers love that extra money and I think they only lose an acre or so under each turbine.

Geno
That was all part of the plan Geno.

Until Veejay embezzled the funds and fled back to India!

I still have a MET tower on the place......but no turbines.

What could that possibly be?

What would shutting the power off gain them?
Sounds like a fantastic place to willingly live.

They have talked about taking over control of the power company, for example. Seems highly socialistic.
Ahhhh....gotcha.
Keep trying to pigeon hole all of of us into the liberal [bleep]...ain't happening bitches....lol.

Them dang injuns again Jim............this time the "dot" type.

Hope the situation changes and you can get some of that gravy.

"Consumer-owned utility" unfortunately would mean that the same liberal dunces controlling California's politics would be making the decisions for us.
Jimy: It's kalifornicationkopia.... what did you expect - rational thinking and common sense laws/regulations/politicians?
Yeah... ha, ha ha!
Sad.

Not if they turned it into an entity like our Co-op. Ours runs great, cheapest rates in the State (as they're not in it to maximize profit), and they actually spend money on repairing infrastructure, like the multitude of poles they replaced this summer. Before they fell and caused problems.

When the utility is owned by investors expecting a certain level of return every quarter, you can dang sure figure that repairs and maintenance fall down the list below shutting off power to the customers. When the customers are the owners, things work differently.

Yours is not regulated by the California Utilities Commission.
Don’t you dumbasses know that electricity is free? You just like plug things in and they work.

Love,
AOC
Let's see, every time the winds blows the power gets shut off, and yet they want everyone to have means to cook to be only electric? Is this the long term plan for the libs? No way to cook so everyone starves?

Just can't help but giggle a little at their way of thinking. Put everyone on an electric system that is unreliable and then tell them that they can't have a gas stove. Brilliant thinking.
Apparently there's no need as we are "self regulating" perhaps?

Maybe there's a clue there?

Of course, the Commission will not be anxious to relinquish power................they never are.

See my earlier post.

I dont know.

Its a turn key operation. Some of the best, most reliable wind around.
You fuxxerz try to paint us all with the same brush....LOL...
I'm the resistance...I ain't doing none of this California bullshit....lol....
Blame it on the Beach Boys all that crooning and kay eyeing about Shangra la dee dah California. phhht. Everyone moved there.
California needs more wind energy.

I will wait a while longer for the call........
Don't miss the real point of this. They can more readily shut off your electric than they can your gas. All about control.
Reliable wind is a great asset.

You tap into it yet on a small scale for outbuildings and such? Maybe for wells, combined with some solar it might be a good way to go. Thinking I need to figure out a set up here for that. I can cook on the wood stove, or out on the BBQ grill in the summer. Only thing I really need electricity for is the well.

In case of the zombie pockalips, ya' know.

Geno
I like the idea of wind and solar for myself.

Sell them your wind Jim.....

Problem is when the wind blows they have to turn off the power to prevent arcin&sparkin lines from burning the place down........ they are in a fix....
