Anybody have a load for 120 NBT that seem to work on most guns
Posted By: ChipM Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/04/22
I've used 45 gr of IMR4350, worked well in 2 7mm-08's, not the fastest. If you want a bit more speed, try Big Game at 50 grains.

45g Varget.

+3 on 45 grains of Var-jay. 50 Grains of Big Game is also good in mine.
Posted By: Remington280 Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/04/22
Varget works but I've found Rl15 to work very well at 40 grains ( youth load) and have a good range of accuracy at 43-45 grains.
Big game works also but accuracy window is small.
I use RL15 in youth rifle and Big Game in my rifle.
Try RL15 for quick work.

RL15 with 120nbt and 140sgk’s in our two.
Posted By: Pharmseller Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/04/22
51.5 gr Big Game, Winchester Large Rifle Magnum primer.

3,126 fps.

Close to max, work up to it.

Vargets All Shot Well In Everthing I've Tried It In... 43-45 Grs and a 120 Is Gold.. To Bad Golds Cheaper Than Varget Now..
Posted By: NMSSHOOTER Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/05/22
I’ve got varget and imr 4350. Think I may try it. Looking for alittle more speed

Currently loading 4350 with the 140 nbt. It shoots well in everything but is slow.
Posted By: bsa1917hunter Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/05/22
Big Game for up to 140gr. Hunter for 150's..
Posted By: dingo Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/06/22
Reloder 17 works for me.
Posted By: DaveinWV Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/06/22
I load 50gr of H4350 for both of my 7mm-08s.
Posted By: NMSSHOOTER Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/12/22
Gonna shoot 45 grains of varget with the 120 bt until suppressor arrives then do alittle more load development.
Thanks for the information

I have always had good luck finding an accuracy node with Varget in .223, .243, 7mm-08 and .308. I do not chase speed. Just stop when I find something sub-MOA in my rifle.

I like the 120 Barnes for my 200 yard hunting
Posted By: eaglemountainman Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/12/22
Not a fan of NBTs.
My 7-08s all like 120 TTSXs over Big Game.

Thanks to Pharmseller for suggesting Big Game several months ago. It works for me.

My groups with the 120 gr BT and 49 gr of BG looked a lot like the group posted above. It was right at 3k fps in my gun. Worked up to 51 gr and the groups were slightly larger. Put it back at 49 as I like cup and core bullets around 2900-3000 fps starting velocity. Now the 120 ttsx, I push at 3175 with BG with .75 MOA accuracy.

I will have to remember this when I load up some more 7mm-08s.. Never fooled with many loads for mine. Made it to hunt whitetails on the east coast. Since I made my last trip there, I think is has been sitting on a junk table gathering dust.

Sounds like you need to order Mule Deers new book Gun Gack IV
Posted By: bruinruin Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/15/22
I only have 1 7-08, so I can't speak to being accurate in most rifles, but after trying several powders and a few different bullets in mine, (which has worn different barrels) I happily settled on 51 or 51.5 grains of Big Game powder for the 120 BT.
Posted By: Scorpion Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/16/22
“The Campfire Load” used to be 43-44 grains of Reloder 15 with a 120 NBT or 120 TSX.

I’ve had success with it in 4 different rifles. Deer drop like they were hit by Thor’s Hammer.

Seems like some prefer Varget or Big Game, I have no personal experience with them.

Rl15 for 140s and under H4350 for anything heavier.

I use 45 grns of Varget if nobody else has mentioned it.....
Posted By: Ken_L Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/20/22
I tested varget and big game with nosler 140 ballistic tips and the kimber definitely favored the big game.

If you don’t use Big Game you’re a gay communist who likes cats.

47 gr BG under 140 TTSX. 2900 + fps from 24 in barrel.

45 gr Varget 120 NBT 2950-3000 fps 22 in barrel
48 gr CFE 223 120 TTSX 3100+ fps 22 in barrel

I'm not sure what he is but I do know he lives in my barn and he's quite independent

Big Game with the 120 gr. Ballistic Tip for the win! I used to use RL 15, but get more velocity and equal accuracy with BG.

The 120 NBT is a classic in the 7-08 and has been one of my favorites.

New fav is the 140 Sierra HPBT. It’s slightly more accurate than the NBT, probably a bit more expansive. I get quick kills with good exits.

Try it.

Thanks for the tip.

I'm a fan of IMR3031 for 120/130 in the 7-08. My rifle (M70 Fwt) has always benefited from speeding up the burn rate for any particular bullet weight. YMMV
Posted By: gunnut308 Re: 7-08 hand loads - 11/24/22
This old girl stepped in front of a 140 NBT a few days ago. I have another 7-08 sighted in with 120’s that I need to drag out.
