I am bored today so piddling around looking at some hunting rifles. Some of my favorite rifles I own are those of the Remington Custom Shop….namely the KS rifles. They are quite the rifle and in my opinion very understated. Those that know them, love them. I’m one of those that love them.

Who owns and loves the Remington KS mountain rifles?

Rifles 350RM, 7-08, 223, 35 Whelen, .280

Remington 700 Custom KS, that started life as a 375 H&H. Original owner had it re-barreled to 300 H&H, then accurized by Hill Country Rifles.

A project that's ever so close to being finished...

700KS in 7mm Rem Mag, Brown Pounder stock and a Schmidt & Bender 3-12x50 Klassik LM L3 illuminated reticle. Looking forward to posting some been there done that photos...

To my knowledge, the only left handed KS mountain rifle factory chambered in 300 H&H.

And its big brother, a lefty KS in 375 H&H. With some battle scars.

The 300 I had built in 1993. I called the custom shop and asked if they would do one so chambered. They said no problem. It’s killed a bunch of deer, quite a few elk, a few antelope and several caribou. The 375 I found at a shop in Wasilla for a bargain price. It came pre scarred from the previous owner. It is a handful from the bench but then, not many bench rest matches are shot with 375s.
You are right. The KS series are a good rifle. Understated is a good description. My two are wonderfully accurate and I’ve heard the same from other KS owners. I’m a fan.
No pics but I had a KS mountain in 8mm rem mag. Helluva rifle.

As somewhat of a Remington nut, the KS SS is possibly my favorite rifle from the Remington Custom Shop.

I'm away from home working in Alaska and can't get to them but I know I have a couple of 7mm Rem Mags that are both great shooters and a 300 RUM that I haven't even fired yet in the safe. I had some others chambered in various cartridges that I wasn't invested in and let them go in trades.

That’s a cool pair…. Dang.
There’s some nice looking KS Mountains here. Makes my two battle scarred veterans look like they need a facelift.

I’m pretty sure I’d do something financially irresponsible if I ever stumbled onto a left hand KS Mtn in 8mm RM.
These are great pics. Thanks for sharing. I had an opportunity to buy a stainless 375 several years ago and passed….very dumb. Not because I ever really needed it, but it was $900🤦🏻‍♂️

Remington's best effort in my opinion.

They are by far my favorite hunting rifle. I prefer the early series with gloss blue finish, jeweled bolt and Brown Precision stock.

That 280 though……nice
I hunted with my 700KS .300 Win Mag almost exclusively for maybe 17 years. It started out as the gloss blue model. I wanted a more durable finish and since it was before the stainless 700s arrived, I had McMillan electroless nickle plate everything. The only decent picture I have is from my 2006 sheep hunt along the Colorado River here in AZ.

.280 KS in its early years - pretty much sits in the back of the safe now.

These are great pics. I knew and have seen pics of some of these rifles. They are just awesome rifles

I heard these are good guns. I should probably buy one…
Even though it doesn't make it out of the safe for hunting much anymore, my M700 KS 338 Winchester magnum is my favorite rifle. Bought it in 1997 and it's wonderfully accurate with 225 gr Accubonds at 2870 FPS.

My KS started life as a 35 whelen, I got it new in 2006. As well as it shot I wanted to throw a little bigger lead and had Kevin Weaver rebarrel it to 375-06 in 2013. By far my favorite rifle, it shoots Sierra 250 grain gamekings at over 2700 fps and Nosler 260 Accubonds at 2600 fps and still weights less than 8 pounds. I really love my KS,

Is there a big difference in barrel contour between KS and factory sporter?

There is - the KS contour for a non-magnum is more similar to a Rem Mtn rifle/1st Gen Ti contour then to their regular sporter barrel. If I can find it I'll try to repost here, I did a comparison of both the KS and a Mtn rifle contour and posted it here but its been several years. In the pictures you can see how similar they are at certain points when you measure down the barrel. But where the KS is better IMHO is the fact it finishes at 24" versus 22" like the Mtn rifle, helps balance a rifle a bit more.
Not sure if this helps - you can sort of see the contours?? Anyway, top rifle is a Gander Mtn Guide rifle in /243, middle rifle is a 1st Gen Ti 7mm-08, bottom is a KS .280. You can sort of see that they are pretty similar.

I love those rifles! All perfect! If you ever decide to foolishly part with that 243, I’d like a shot at it👍🏼
My favorite contour.

Some good discussion here:

https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbt...tthread/Board/39/main/997731/type/thread
As OM stated, the KS is often described as midway between the mountain and standard sporter.
The contour in discussion:

The KS Magnums are a similar taper, but my .300 Win was .640 at the muzzle IIRC.

Nick, during moments of stupidity on my part I actually sold the top 2 rifles crazy

Yes. The ks magnum taper is unique as well. While the lilja standard ks is not an exact dupe; the lilja magnum ks is:

My first was a 7RemMag that I sold, had to remedy that foolish decision and was fortunate to later acquire a 30-06 and a .280.

I know - I should of known better but so it goes. If I was a smart guy I"d of grabbed up every KS that came up for sale versus building a bunch of customs that aren't even in the same league as the KS rifles

Would you tell me the difference between a Remington 700 KS and a Remington KS Mountain Rifle? Reason I asked is that for years I've heard them called Remington 700 KS Mountain Rifles but have never seen a Rem 700 KS Mountain rifle. I own two Remington 700 KS Rifles and five Remington 700 Mountain Rifles but have yet to see a Remington 700 KS Mountain Rifle.
Thanks for helping me clear this up.
Like an idiot I sold my .375H&H KS.

That’s actually one rifle I really wish I’d have kept.

They are the same - the Remington Custom Shop KS Mountain rifle I guess what it is technically called. The "KS" I believe was because of the Kevlar stock - KS part of that. So if they came out of the Custom Shop its a KS rifle, if they where a regular mountain rifle they had wood or plastic stocks and the regular mountain rifle also had a 22" barrel where the KS Mountain Rifle barrels are 24".

AKwolverine can correct me if I got anything wrong but think thats pretty accurate description??
Nope; all correct same/same. Only thing I’d add is the ks safari. A 700 ks could technically also be a safari; but a ks mountain rifle is a what most usually refer to as a ks.

That is what I had hoped to see.. Went out to check my 30-06 KS box and it is identical!
Thanks for getting me back in line!

You're not the only idiot Frank.

Last time I had track, the top rifle still resides in Texas. I've tried numerous times to buy it back, but to no avail.
All that's left to do now is to start squeezing the trigger!

That turned out great Dean!
Thank you! Hoping it shoots half as good as it looks!
I’ll try to find a picture. I ordered a KS .338 Win. Mag in 1987, which I believe was the first year production. It was my only big game rifle until 1999. Been sitting in the safe as a spare to my Rifles, Inc. Strata .338 since then. Check it every few years to make sure it’s still sighted in.

d500,
What’s the barrel measure at the muzzle on your 35 W?
Regards, and thanks in advance.
