I didn’t need this rifle at all, but badly wanted it after I picked it up. A CZ550 American in 9.3x62 (oxymoron I know) that appears to be either seldom or never fired. I saw one a few years back in the composite stock, and have regretted not buying it since... I wasn’t going to let that happen this time. This American stock is absolutely beautiful and quite trim compared to the pig that was on the 550 UHR I briefly owned.

Talleys are in the mail, now I need dies, brass, 250gr accubonds...

Nicest wood I've seen on a CZ.

I'd say you scored bigly!

That is a GORGEOUS rifle !!!

CONGRATS !!! May it serve you well.

That's the best looking 550 I've ever seen. I've seen some 527s with pretty wood, and some 452s, but never seen anything "nice" on a 550. That one is SHARP!
Posted By: Quak Re: CZ550 9.3x62 Find - 06/18/19
Damn! I’m a huge 550 fan.

You scored, no doubt.

I owned one before and it had nothing on that one!

Very nice, I think I would have had trouble passing on that one.

Very nice, if it shoots like my 550 FS you will be very happy.
Posted By: Jwood1284 Re: CZ550 9.3x62 Find - 06/18/19
Dang now you all are making me self-conscious about how to scope it up. I have a VX3i 3.5-10, but wondering if the Czech rifle deserves a Meopta or Swaro Z3?
Posted By: Dirtfarmer Re: CZ550 9.3x62 Find - 06/18/19
Here's an unusual 550 FS with Conquest 3-9x40 (sent it back for elevation turret). Those work well with 550's. This one is a 7x57.

Had this 3.5 - 10 x 50 Leupold with Illuminated reticle, laying around collecting dust. Since the rifle came with high rings I gave it a try.

That'll work.

I've posted JB's 9.3x62 loads before, will do it again. Proven loads, pressure tested and they work.

My go to load in the past was Norma Brass, 250 gr. Accubonds, 58 gr. varget, Fed 210M primers and 3.290 OAL. I upped the last loads to 60 grains. The Nosler #7 manual shows 56.5 grains of Varget as max load, with 52.5 grs. of Varget shown as the most accurate load with the 250 Accubonds. It is seldom that I load over book max, but I did on the Sako, and had no problem with blown primers or stretched cases.

I really like that scope, have one on my Champlin and Haskins, Len Brownell built 7RM. With the quarter rib and long ring spacing, not any scope would work.

Actually Zeiss 1.5-4.5x18, not Swaro...

I like your FS 550, nice wood.

Yep we’ve discussed them before . Really love that model Zeiss . But I picked up the Swarovski and swapped the Zeiss over to a 375 H&H

I can't blame on you that grab. I've owned 2. Both were accurate but neither looked anywhere that nice. I've seen worse looking Supergrade stocks. Mine loved the 250 grain accubonds and the 286 Oryx/Megas.

Gotcha.

jorge, regarding CZ's, they are generally very accurate.

Looking at the typical CZ bore thru the Hawkeye shows a slick bore, near custom barrel quality. A LONG way from the average Rem or Salvage tube with tool marks. It's a wonder some of them shoot as well as they do.

The CZ OEM trigger has MIM parts. If you adjust to eliminate the set trigger feature, you lock the trigger in forward position. Removing the barreled action with that set up can put the trigger in a bind, even break it. The answer is elongating the trigger slot in the bottom metal, or leaving the set trigger configuration as is.

I broke mine, ended up with a Timney.

Nice looking x62. I highly recommend changing out the safety to a M70 type. The trigger on those adjust nicely. Toss on a sling swivel and a front sight and get yourself a peep sight from NECG and you'll really be cookin'!

I have the same rifle, but not as good wood. Close but not that nice. Very accurate, the loads shown have been all I've ever needed. You'll like it.

I much prefer the standard 3 pos saftey on that cz to a swing out Winchester style. I wouldn’t change a thing.

I am betting that when you start killing game with it you'll just fall in love.

Beautiful rifle! If you haven’t settled on a scope, don’t bypass a used Leupold 1.75-6.

Did you find this in a gun shop in Alabama? If so, let me know where as I need to start shopping there.

I would seriously consider putting a VX6 1-6 on it. I used those on my last trip to Africa on a 404 J and 375 H&H. Was not left wanting at all.
Posted By: Jwood1284 Re: CZ550 9.3x62 Find - 06/23/19
Rings, brass, and dies arrived. Still waiting on the Accubonds to get here, and I'll get the Varget locally. The medium Talley's are still too low for the ocular on my Razor LH 1.5-8, so the VX3i gets the nod for now.

I also swapped the plastic follower in favor of a steel one from CZ USA.

Posted By: Quak Re: CZ550 9.3x62 Find - 06/25/19
Ive got 3. All of mine came with the machined steel follower and a 3 pos saftey. Mine also came from the factory free floated, glass AND pillar bedded. I wonder when the switchover to plastic was on the follower? Take a gander down that barrel when you get a chance. They do a very very nice job finishing them.

Im a big fan of the triggers. Simple to adjust and an open design that's easy to clean.

All i shoot anymore

Quak, My 1998 7x64 FS has a plastic follower and had a plastic floorplate. Bought a steel one from CZ-USA for $110 but, made do with the follower since it was another 75 bucks. BTW, I have a brand new steel floorplate for the CZ-550 magnum I would make someone a deal on.

Update:

I found a smoking deal on a SHV 3-10 demo with the illuminated duplex reticle. This is an amazing scope, and it just clears the bolt handle with Warne mediums. It’s heavy compared to a VX3, but this rifle is already a tank. I’ve got two load tests assembled with 250gr accubonds and 270gr speers, both over Varget.

There was a guy from Houston, Bob Faucett? or something close to that that had posted here on the 'fire a 9.3 load list with several well known gunwriters favorite 9.3 loads.and the info had been published I think in Handloader. I got my 550 American 9.3x62 in early '5. Found 2 of 'em in Arlington in calling every CZ dealer in 5 states, only an hour+ from my house in far north Dallas

I wound up getting very good accuracy from Speer 270's and found some disc'd 250 gr Nosler BT's. This was right as the 250 gr NAB's were 1st being produced and barely showing up and really hard to get. FWIW Speer 270's & RL15 were " more than adequate" on Texas WTails but my very first 4 rounds were mind boggleing... a one shot sighter, and 3 more rounds holding on the sighter, with all 4 under an inch & 3 touching at 100 paces at a backyard range full of AR shooters and No RO, laying on a piece of cardbord to stay out of the mud. I was hooked on whole deal and would love to be able to shoot a 9.3 again but mid 70's age and now a bum shoulder sez No Way.

Get Mule Deer to look in the archives for that older load list and post it...look at the impressive names of the authors of the various loads too and know that those loads really were that accurate. Have fun and enjoy the history that comes alive for you,. beautimous rifle too.
Ron .
