Newer BACO M70..
Outstanding workmanship
Is that a casting?
Scope mount holes not aligned?
No squareness reference in the pic, could be an optical illusion. Hard to tell, certainly nothing indicating a side mount.
inquiring minds wanna know....... i see a few possible issues. rust, ejection port what??????????
Big Ed
Those holes look a weeee bit foreword.
Somebody shoulda bought a Tikka.... laffin...
From that angle the holes look oblong.
front hole is left of center more than the back one the back one looks off also
Whatever it is, can’t be as bad as mine. I’ve got one hole that’s 6-48, the other 8-40 and a tin can shim.
She’s a beaut.....
I think i see rust 😬......Hb
No reflection of the photographer!!! Vampire!!!
It’s difficult to tell, looks off center to me.
I see exactly what you see!
Looks like the front hole is all the way through.
If the holes are off-center, maybe it’s their new long range rifle. Pre-set for the “coriolis effect”!
memtb
Preset for a Leupold's unoptimal 100 yard zero
Looks like a crack to me.
Is a Braille transcript available?
I agree with 16bore. Drilled too far forward. May be so you can mount a shorter scope on a long action? grin...
No model 70 expert but in looking at the picture I'm also guessing the scope holes are not in the right location. I think the front one is Ok but the back hole should be further back??
Don’t know what the hell it is.....Redneck is mean!
Been following this thread for a couple of days and I give up.....for the life of me I cant find elaine's nipple. 😉
What is the cut on the lhs of the action
There is a cutout in front of where the bolt release button is located. Is this a single shot? Looks like the bottom is not cutout for the ammo. Its hard to tell in the photo, but it appears that the top of the action, where the holes are drilled, is lower than the left side of the action. The left side should be lower than the top of the action. Again, this could just be the angle that the pic was taken. After looking at this more, I believe the way the light shine off the left side makes an optical illusion. Looking at it one way, the left side looks high, another way and it looks correct.
The holes appear to be drilled in about the right place, assuming they are straight. The front hole does appear to be drilled all the way thru, but the rear hole doesn't. Hard to tell the way the light is. They should be drilled all the way thru.

where the bolt would go, on the opposite side of the action, what is that big hole where you are seeing daylight?
non of my Model 70s have that on them, that I recall....
John, that's the same cutout I see. I dont recall seeing that on either of my M70's.
Yeah Randy, makes me first wonder if someone overpressurized the action with a round that was miles over SAAMI specs...
couple of years ago, I found a piece of metal, that was stuck in wood behind one of the shooters bench.. it was as long as my thumb, and had Winchester stamped on it...had a heck of a time working it out of the wood with a pair of pliers....
evidently some local yoyo, blew up an action and unceremoniously left.. range never heard if someone showed up at the Local ER in the Hospital or Urgent Care....
the same situation be my first guess on the etiology of why the hole is there....
Why would that kind of damage be on the rear of the action and not showing any damage on the front of the action?
Cartridge let lose at the web, blowing primer etc...gunsmith had to remove what was left of the rest of the case...
I've seen aftermaths of a cartridge being way overloaded, and damaged the trigger and destroyed the stock when it let lose...
once even destroying the scope...
Also look at the right side of the action, just on front of the top.... is that dark spot a shadow? Hard to tell in the pic.
Say what you want about the BACO guns, but they are much better machined and finished than the NH guns, even the 5 digit classics and I have owned a pile of em.
Guess Redneck is just gonna leave us hangin’......
...dancing in the night....
lol...Was my first thought as well...
From that angle the holes look oblong.
DING DING DING!!!
All four holes are oval-shaped... WTH????
Drilled crooked, tapped square?
They just appear to be oblong, because they are drilled on a radius instead of a flat surface.
unless they have some special oblong drill bits and specialty taps.
No problem, can put a square screw in an oblong hole. Its the curved holes that bother me, hard to find those flexible screws.

You might have to go with left handed screws, depending on the rotation of the curve...

.
Oh, they ARE oblong..on top - but the holes seem to be D/T ok.... Never saw anything like this before... Looks like crap, IYAM....

All four holes are oval-shaped... WTH????
Are they truly oval shaped or are they just chamfered for ease of starting the screw and because of that, they look oval. If a correct-sized screw threads in with no resistance, the hole is not oval.
A bit aggressive with the buffing process.

Oval at surface only... Just below that, the holes are D/T just fine... But it sure looks like crap to me.... And no other BACO I've had in the shop exhibits that anomaly..
Oblong holes? Meh. Just use a bigger hammer to install the screws.

They must have used a countersink to deburr the hole.

That's where the bolt release goes, but the action is completely disassembled, probably getting a a new barrel.........

Okay, This a long thread, so here goes.
You are going to turn that action into a really cool rifle.
Looks like there is some work that needs to get done.
Wishing you the best with this one.
Considering the holes are drilled through a curved surface, they look round to me.
They aren't - trust me...
What would be a proper fix? Weld up and re drill and tap?

I got an idea.......install bases and move on. JeeZ
Long thread.
But dam.....you drill on a curved surface and when they buffed it the sides are thinner and cuts quicker.
So it looks wider.
What’s the fuss about?
Makes no difference if you use the hole.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
My sentiments exactly.
Installing is fine if the holes aren't compromised and strip out when the screws are torqued down. If you guys like your stuff half a$$ then install and move on I myself am a little bit ocd about stuff.
Looks like above: Holes not aligned, too far forward, and oblong.
Could be optical.
