something on the .473" casehead?, or RCM , SAUM, WSM, or maybe super fat Lazzeroni?
(or any wildcat bores based on such)

what are your two ideal selections?
.243 w
.308 w
Best at what?
Oh goodness......

22-250.
Sorry I need three short action cartridges.
.243 win
.308 win
300 win short mag
.223
Then take your pick of 6.5 CM or PRC or .308 Win.
I have multiple nulas, but 2 of my favorites are a 30x284 pushing a 168gr berger at 3150 fps and a 338x284 pushing a 200gr combined technology at 2980 fps. both are tack driving hammers
The only 2 that I like enough to buy them are the 308 and the 7-08.
And not a one in any bolt action unless it uses a NATO type magazine. Mossberg MVP or Ruger Scouts come to mind but there are a few others too here and there.

But in a lever action, auto, or pump I like both the 308 and the 7-08. But all of them work fine.

Got a 325WSM but would like a 300WSM.

6.5 Creedmoor
7mm-08 Remington
308 Winchester

Sorry, I couldn’t stop with just two!

The Devil wear Prada 👠 now. Laffin 😎
.325 WSM for big bears, bison, and hoofed stuff in bear country.
7mm WSM for the rest.

The 6.5mm short magnums are a good idea too but as a practical matter don't outperform the 7mm.
.223AI and 6 Dasher
250 savage
308 Winchester
Best for me?
.223 Rem
.308 Win
.300 WSM
Sorry, I couldn't make it with two, I "need" three 😁......Hb

He is not wrong.....

308 Win
7mm saum
.223
.308
Until the 6.5 Creedmoor came along it was the 243 and the 308. For my purposes, the 2 I shoot the most are the 223 and the 243.

I need a job description to determine "the best." My favorites, of those I own, are the 22-250 and 243 Win.
For Mountain Hunting:
1. 284 Winchester
2. 308
7-08
358
all around

308
223

just big game hunting

308
7-08
If it's not limited to .473 or bigger, the .223 (fast twist) has to be in it for me.....it's just so useful for hunting, easy on barrels, easy on the shoulder, low cost, low powder usage, lots of bullet options, etc.

It's a toss up on the next depending on how it will be used. 6.5 CM, 7-08, .308 would be in the running.....I'd probably go 6.5 since the "what suites you best" for me would be mainly deer hunting.

6.5 Creed and 300 WSM covers things nicely in SA.

With a solid mounting system and scopes without known defects you have good tools to get the job done.
7mm08 and 300WSM are my two favorites. I think the .243, 6.5CM, and .300 WSM would make a great 3 gun battery though.
Just did a quick tabulation. It seems the 308 and 223 are still heavy hitters in the polls. Old school still rocks.
It is hard to imagine (outside of maybe coastal brown bears) what I would feel unprepared for at reasonable ranges if all I had in my cabinet was a .223 and a 7mm-08.
7 x 57 classic and still rockin.
Myself, I use the .243 win and a straightwall- .450 Marlin, short n' fat.

Fine old cartridge, but short action?
Two?!? Horrible thought.
Torn between 6 creed/7 wsm or 6.5 creed/300 wsm.
223/7-08 wouldn’t suck either. Add a 6.5 prc for my 7th. Perfect 7, right? grin
I could get by with a .223 and a 6.5 CM (or .260, 7mm-08 or 308) but I'm glad that I don't have to.
.308 Win for general all around. Would like a 6.5 WSM for open windy plains.
243 win
358 win
6.5 Creedmoor
7mm SAUM

Shooting heavy for caliber bullets, these two would handle all my hunting on any continent.

Honorable mention to the 6.5 PRC and .338 Federal.

Loaded to 308 Win. pressure in a modern bolt action the 300 Savage would be the 7.62 Creedmoor if it wasn't already the 300 Savage. I load long seated Berger VLD's for my 700 Classic in 300 Sav. and that makes for a very modern looking cartridge.

I almost went with the 7 SAUM. Need to get mine out hunting.

Heck yeah.....almost like the 30 TC!

Don’t forget the 22-250 and the 250 Savage!
For shooting game:

6.5 Creedmoor

338 Federal
358 Win
338 RCM
For me??

Dont need 2.

The 6mm Remington kills critters to Midwest whitetail w ease.

70 grain bullets for coyotes/fox/cats/crows or 85-100 bullets for easy to kill deer, or maybe just an 85 to do it all.

If I were to pick just 2 it would be a 22-250 & the 6mm.
For anything bigger than coyotes:

7mm-08 Rem
308 Win

Anything smaller

223 Rem
243 Win
Only need one: .243 Win
It's Iowa. .223 and .243.

kwg
I don't own a short action at all.
270 WSM and 308 Win are my pics. Although I’d probably seap the 308 for a 358 if my shoulder could handle it.

Of course, in 5-10 more years, I’ll probably have to swap the WSM for a 6.5CM to be a bit gentler on the shoulder.

Ha Ha. I am kind of a belted magnum enthusiast, so short actions don't really float my boat. The only 2 non belted calibers I own are in 270 and 30-06.

284 Winchester
.308

.300 WSM

I’d happily hunt a coastal brown with a 7-08 if I were so inclined. It would work fine I’d imagine and I’d venture a guess that it has many times over

243 Win.
358 Win.
The 2 in my safe that see the most time in the woods are my 7-08AI and my 338 Federal. The 243AI’s, 250AI, 22-250 etc don’t get out much anymore, except to the range.

For me it is:

6X45
7-08AI

I can load either of them up or down to kill anything I want to.

FWIW, if you can handle a 270 WSM, you can handle a 358 Win.

My picks:
270 WSM
7.62x39

Best for me......for me it would be

.250 Savage & 7-08. (My 7-08 goes by .275 rigby these days tho)
The two that I have owned and used the longest:

6mm Rem
284 Win

Both of these are easy to load and flexible.
We named them all...so the answer is all of them..
But we have forgot one everyone names there favorite but the one that probably diserves the title as the greatest is the good ole 30-30
We don't think of it as a conventional short action carterage but it actually is...

308 Win and pick one.
308 Winchester and 6.5X54 M/S. Be Well, Rusty
.223 and either the .260 Rem, 6.5 CM or the 7mm08, depending on one shooting needs......
270 WSM
358 Winchester

270 WSM

I could live with this combo and be quite happy.
308 Winchester
300 Winchester Short Magnum

When asked while carrying my 300 WSM's I simply respond with "308".
I've done a talley for all so far (my figures might not be exact), and the results are:

308Win (25)
7mm08 (16)
223Rem (14)
6.5mm CM (12)
243Win (10)
308 aaaaaand maybe the 358? Seems like you’d have all your bases covered.
Hmmm....gotta have the 223 in there, and I suppose that I will go with 300 SAUM, since now one has picked the SAUM. Both are so much more than given credit for.

True, that
My pick:

6mm Creedmoor
338 Federal
Depends on a few things..... however for me it would be 243 Win and 358 Win.
I have a 7mm-08 for deer and a .222 for varmits/coyotes.

I love all these. GREAT choices.

If it were me, though:

6.5 Creedmoor and .338 Federal

6.5x284 and .338 RCM
223 and 6.5 PRC or 6.5 SAUM 4S?
260 Remington and 358 Winchester. For all but the biggest stuff in Africa. Be Well, Rusty
.243 win

P
Probably not best due to action lengths and bullet deigns of today, but most innovative cases for their time would be 6.5 Rem Mag and 284 Win. Many of today's popular case designs owe a little something to them.

By far, I prefer the tall lanky Brazilian super models to the short chubbies so give me a 270 or 280 over any .473 based shorty.

The short ultra fats will never feed as well as the LA magnums but just serve to create a buying frenzy among those seeking “the answer”.

308 and 22-250
325 WSM and 308 Win, if held to 2 picks for me.
I like the 325 in the Kimber Montana and the 308 in the AR platform.
My 4 personal picks of 2 "magnum" and 2 non-magnum would be:
325 WSM
7 WSM
308 Win
7mm-08

crazy
