Anything out there? Looking for a box feed Remington or Browning auto with a 10 round magazine.

The Triple K brand 10-round 30-06 magazines are available on eBay.
Not sure there is anything I would call reliable.

This one would be cool to have LOL 30-06 Automatic Colt

I'll need reliable, thinking 16-18" bbl point & shoot. Running Weldcore 180 or NPT 200 grain. Torpedoes be damned, Grizzly protection.

M 1 Garand with 168 TTSX. Done deal.

If its grizzly you worry about, I carry a Glock 20 around them most of the time. Will kill em dead.

If I have to chase a wounded brown bear in the alders I'd would really love to have one of those M1 Garands in 458 win mag.. As is a 458 win mag in bolt gun suffices.

Heavy but here is something to consider.

No way I would carry a Remington Jam-o-matic with a 10 rd 3rd party mag for bear protection. Those things have enough issues with the standard 4 rd mags.

Although a BAR has a mag, it’s contained under a hinged floor plate. I guess you could try to mod one, but then there’s the issue of finding a high capacity mag. Never heard of such a thing.

What’s wrong with a 12 gauge. Tubular fed semi or pump, or an AR-12 platform. My RIA AR-12 has a 9rd mag, and is awesome shooting slugs.

https://www.armscor.com/firearms-list/vr60-shotgun-standard-12ga-5rd

With a smooth bore, I shoot sub 2.5” groups at 100 yds. Hard to believe if I didn’t experience it myself.
I've run the 10 rnd Tripple K's with my 7600 carbine just for fun. Works slick and just a crazy amount of fire power.
Benelli used to make a 10 rounder for the R1 never saw any in stock though.

Garand, 8+1=9. Close enough for government work.

Incredibly expensive, but thats probably your only choice if you just have to have an 06, not a .308
No the Garand hold a total of 8. Not 8+1

That rifle looks like it would get it done, I'm reading up on it.

Someone was making a semi BAR a while back. IIRC Shrap shot some rabbits with one, either his or Venturino’s.

Kinda bulky for backpacking…..My father bitched about carrying one all over Yurrup 1944-45. Some how he managed to shoot Expert with it in training, and won the prize of toting one.

Nothing in 30-06 I'd touch.

Buy a bolt rifle and learn how work the bolt fast, Winchesters are 5+1. You can get some 10 round box magazines for several 308's. The 18" Ruger Predator that takes AIC mags would be a contender. At close range there won't be a significant difference in velocity from a 16-18" 30-06 vs a 308.

If it HAS to be semi-auto then a Benelli 12 ga with slugs.

And I'll 2nd the notion of a 10mm with heavy Buffalo Bore or Double Tap loads.

I own a few 10 round mags for the Remington 742. Mine was 30-06. However, they would also feed my 7600 in 35 Whelen.

I wish I could be optimistic, but in 20 years, I never got a full mag to empty without a jam of some sort. This was one of those dry holes that you stick in the bottom drawer and move on.

You're right, I forgot you can't do 1 in the chamber plus the clip.
Whats this for?
High cap and .30 cal iron sights........ I'd go with a .308 win battle rifle of some sort.

If sporting purpose, some euro auto (.308 or .30-06).

BTW, a 16" FAL Para is still a pig LOL
I had an AR 308 with several 20 round magazines and one 5 round magazine. Never had an issue with function.
I recently saw M1A tankers for sale. I believe you’d have a good selection of magazines for them too
https://nemoarms.com/omen-series/
I have had the Remington Models 740, 742 (they were both jammomatics. "Don't leave home WITH one" ha) I've also had a Model Four (270) a model 7400 (30-06) and a Model 750 Whelan Carbine. They were excellent and reliable rifles. So you could "try one of them out" with any 10rd magazines and if reliable, hey, use 165 Barnes or 200 Partitions. OR as mentioned, a Benelli that would shoot 3" Magnums. THEN, I will sell you this wad of Terminator 3" 12ga 850gr hard lead slugs! I have several of the "Tuskers" that shoot a 600gr hard lead. I've only shot the Tuskers in my Mod 870 WingMaster Magnum, yes, they kick...hard. I don't know about the Terminators. frown

I know it is not a .30-06 but for close up stuff and stopping power a .458 SOCOM will get it done. It fits in the AR platform and will accept high capacity mags that will work. It is single stack and I do not know for sure what mag it will take to get 10 rounds.
Have a great day.
Jim
WWII Browning BAR comes to mind smile Honestly the Garand is the proven one, it gets you 8

The new Beretta straight pull in 30-06 announced at SHOT last week will have high cap magazine capability, but not a semi auto if that is a deal killer

Lots of power in a portable package. Same gun in 450 Bushmaster is another viable option. Buffalo Bore loads some powerful loads for either one. A Ruger SFAR .308 looks intriguing as well. I’ve considered all these, as well as the compact M1A’s as a camp gun for Alaska.
Would a 16" M1 Garand work ? Tell Shuff you want to shoot 200 grain slugs out of it so he can drill the right size gas port.

This is what you need. One of my best friends hunts hogs in the cutover, brush, and swamps of south Georgia with this: Browning BAR Mk3 DBM
Or this, if you feel a little more traditional: Browning BAR Mk 3 DBM, wood

I've handled both of these and they're relatively light, and with the 18" fluted barrel, they're purposefully made to be very fast handling in close quarters. At the ranges you're talking about, with modern ammo, there's very little to no practical difference between the .30-06 and the .308. Plus with one of these, you get Browning reliability and a purpose designed and built rifle.
Garand was what popped into my head too. A consideration with that one though is the fairly narrow pressure band and velocity range that must be adhered too or run the risk of twanging the operating rod. That can be overcome to an extent with an adjustable gas valve but there would still be considerable tweaking of loads and adjusting the gun if smacking big bears up close with heavy premium bullets going as fast as practical is in the cards. I dunno, I'm not a "bear guy", but on the other hand wouldn't 8 shots quick of "standard" 150-165's at 2700-2800fps be good medicine?
The M1 Ball version using 173gr (+/-) hunting bullets would work quite well I'd imagine.
I suppose ten rounds beats five provided you have the time to use some. I've been watching the "I Was Prey" series on the Animal Planet channel and the last three episodes had two grizzly and a black bear attack along with their usual shark and alligator chewing. The one guy worked for the forest service and got between a sow and cubs and he didn't even have time to get his handgun out before the bear got him. The bear ran through the cloud of bear spray to rip on the guy. The daughter of an acquaintance of mine worked with the Alaska Fish & Game Department as a summer intern doing some kind of a bear study and he told me that they used shotguns as back up. A 12 gauge slug is more than double the diameter of a .30-06/.308. If you are able to put a bunch of shots into a grizzly, you'd better have a pretty convincing argument about why the bear had all those holes in it and you didn't.
I can't fathom going any way but an 870 w/18-20" bbl and mag extender or Benelli M-3 if it's purely a defensive bear deterrent.
No kidding, all of you Bear Country guys....I have a bunch of Dixie Slugs I'll make you a deal on!
An AR-10/ LR 308 loaded with 150 grain TTSX or 160 grain partitions would give impressive results in flesh or in chewing up cover
Pump vs Semi?!?!!??

Guys that say pump assume that both hands are free to deal situation at hand.

Hunting deer is one thing but fending off things bent on killing you is another.
You guys might want to read a book titled Alaska's Bear Hunting Judge, by Richard C. Folta. It was first published in 1986, but sold well enough there were two printings, and they can be purchased on the Internet for around $35.

He moved to Alaska just before WWI, and started off hunting on Kodiak with a Remington semi-auto .35 Remington--but eventually went to the Garand....

The Benelli M3 is pump and/or semi auto.

Like this or the Ruger SFAR any thoughts?

Well if a guy had him a stash of GI ammo of all "colors" don't know how you could do better than a M1 Garand that is in nice shape . Mb
FN 49?

The Belgians would make a contract for production of the SAFN 1949 rifle on August 24, 1950 for 6,000 rifles in caliber .30-06 Springfield. - from Wikipedia

WOW that looks like fun, unless you are standing at the wrong end of the barrel.

After dropping so many animals in their tracks with my .30-06, I have often wondered how anyone would survive even 1 round of an 06 in WWI or II.
I think the two easiest choices are a Browning Bar DBM or the Ruger SFAR.

Both are in 308 which is interchangable in terms of performance with a 30-06.

If you want the more traditional rifle go with the BAR. If you want all the options that come with an AR, go with the Ruger.

If you live or hunt in a place with no ARs,the Browning chooses itself.

I would probably shoot Nosler Partitions which expand rapidly and penetrate very well

I have only killed one bear, a black bear in Ontario. But the 308 Caliber Nosler Partition instantly put the bear down.

Another great choice in 308 ammo would be the 165 Grain Trophy Bonded Tip by Federal. It worked great on African plains game for me.
HK 940- Heavy & expensive but accurate and reliable. 10 rnd mags from HK.
Weight is comparable to the Garand. Probably a bit lighter.
The only semi-auto rifles I’d trust in life or death situations are the M1 and the M14. If the M1A is built as good as the M14’s were, then the M1A too. I’ve not had much experience with the M1A though.

The AR platform works great for PD shooting and target shooting. As far as depending my life on a rifle, they are bottom of the heap for me, perhaps equal to trap door Springfields with copper cases and black powder loads, as used by General Custer’s men.

The Browning BAR is a great hunting rifle.

The 742/7400 isn’t nearly as bad as some say. Most of the nay sayers seem to work on the Remington semi-autos without knowing what loads have been shot in them, I think. The Browning is a better rifle than the Remingtons, IMO.

I have very little experience with German or other military’s rifles. Good or bad, IDK.

+1

Other than the weight difference, we weren't too thrilled when they took away our M14s and gave us M16s. Full auto function of the 16s was a nice plus.

I had one. Accurate & heavy (>9lb if I remember right) the chamber was tight and all ammo had to have the neck trimmed. Ran a finish reamer in it and it worked fine. Great target rifle.
Still it’s an AR. More Army and Marines died in Vietnam due to M16’s miserable POS - won’t function. Never ever trust an AR with your life and I’ll never change my mind on that - I’m permanently prejudiced.
Already said. If you could use the WWII BAR..... RZ.
This guy will build you an M-1 in 35 Whelen.

Ohio Ordnance makes a semi-auto 30-06 with a 20-round magazine. It only weighs 19.4# but we all need to exercise more. Besides, it comes with a nifty carrying handle:
