Not sure there is anything I would call reliable. I'll need reliable, thinking 16-18" bbl point & shoot. Running Weldcore 180 or NPT 200 grain. Torpedoes be damned, Grizzly protection. 41

M 1 Garand with 168 TTSX. Done deal.
If its grizzly you worry about, I carry a Glock 20 around them most of the time. Will kill em dead.
If I have to chase a wounded brown bear in the alders I'd would really love to have one of those M1 Garands in 458 win mag.. As is a 458 win mag in bolt gun suffices.
We can keep Larry Root and all his idiotic blabber and user names on here, but we can't get Ralph back..... Whiskey Tango Foxtrot, over....

A few people are making AR based 30-06. https://www.bearcreekarsenal.com/calibers/30-06/30-06-rifles.htmlNo way I would carry a Remington Jam-o-matic with a 10 rd 3rd party mag for bear protection. Those things have enough issues with the standard 4 rd mags. Although a BAR has a mag, it’s contained under a hinged floor plate. I guess you could try to mod one, but then there’s the issue of finding a high capacity mag. Never heard of such a thing. What’s wrong with a 12 gauge. Tubular fed semi or pump, or an AR-12 platform. My RIA AR-12 has a 9rd mag, and is awesome shooting slugs. https://www.armscor.com/firearms-list/vr60-shotgun-standard-12ga-5rd With a smooth bore, I shoot sub 2.5” groups at 100 yds. Hard to believe if I didn’t experience it myself.

I've run the 10 rnd Tripple K's with my 7600 carbine just for fun. Works slick and just a crazy amount of fire power.

If I wanted to carry a long gun for bear protection, I would much prefer this to any semi-auto sporting rifle.

Garand, 8+1=9. Close enough for government work.

Someone was making a semi BAR a while back. IIRC Shrap shot some rabbits with one, either his or Venturino’s.
Kinda bulky for backpacking…..My father bitched about carrying one all over Yurrup 1944-45. Some how he managed to shoot Expert with it in training, and won the prize of toting one.
What fresh Hell is this?

I'll need reliable, thinking 16-18" bbl point & shoot. Running Weldcore 180 or NPT 200 grain. Torpedoes be damned, Grizzly protection. Nothing in 30-06 I'd touch. Buy a bolt rifle and learn how work the bolt fast, Winchesters are 5+1. You can get some 10 round box magazines for several 308's. The 18" Ruger Predator that takes AIC mags would be a contender. At close range there won't be a significant difference in velocity from a 16-18" 30-06 vs a 308. If it HAS to be semi-auto then a Benelli 12 ga with slugs. And I'll 2nd the notion of a 10mm with heavy Buffalo Bore or Double Tap loads.
Most people don't really want the truth.
They just want constant reassurance that what they believe is the truth.

41 I own a few 10 round mags for the Remington 742. Mine was 30-06. However, they would also feed my 7600 in 35 Whelen. I wish I could be optimistic, but in 20 years, I never got a full mag to empty without a jam of some sort. This was one of those dry holes that you stick in the bottom drawer and move on.
