Just wondering what the rest of you guys are taking with you.

I spent the week lining up my 99-375 (took a nice 8 point and a doe with it last year), my 99R in 358 and my 99R in 300 Sav. All good to go right now. Heading out tomorrow so hopefully I'll have some good pics for you guys at the end of next week. Gonna be down a guy this year, the camps getting smaller. At 9 guys now. My buddies dad had a stroke 2 months ago and has regained pretty much everything except the side of his face but still has a hard time getting around yet he still managed to fill his bull moose tag last month. Won't be climbing into any tree stands though. Anyways, hopefully this turns into a good thread, have fun guys, see ya when I get back, peace out! laugh

Mike
358 EG and 250 T, depending if I'm brush hunting or setting, overlooking an open area. All ready to go.I also have a winny 30-30 carbine as a stand-in.
Old Trusty must go.. 1945 99EG in 300. Then I think I'll take along a 1920 99C in 303, and might even try to get my new 1916 250-3000 out.

99T in 300 might make it out for does later in the year. That's the nice thing about having 6 permits, can exercise a few of the rats. grin
It's all bow and black powder this year... six deer between my partner and I.

This one my partner took 20 minutes into the season at 7:09 AM on Oct. 1. We've been enjoying the pepperettes and salami/ summer sausage for a couple of weeks now. smile

Like Jed I promised the Winnie's I 'd take them out this year.Pre 64 70 Featherweight .358,Pre 64 70 .250/3000 & .300 Sav. Probably take Dad's 300F a few day's.Going to give this 22H.P. a shot with a Buck 119 Special as a backup,in case I have to wrestle with one after the shot.
I'll take the EG in 300, and a Remington 141 in 35 rem.
just a plain old 308F
My first year to use a 99. It will be 99F from 1959 in 300 savage with Weaver K4 post type scope. Will use my Savage 219 in 30-30 for a backup. Hope all of you have great success this season.
The premil 243 F is going most days. The 1899C in 25-35 is getting to go for rides in the truck on the nice days!
1899H in .22 HiPower. She's sighted in and raring to go. 70gr. Speers at 2800fps. Have to pick and choose my shots with this one but it'll do it.

Backups include the 99A in .30/30 w/K3 in Stith or custom Mauser "Guild gun" in .30/06 w/ K2.5 in Griffin&Howe QD Sidemount. The HiPower is the only one not blooded yet. I wonder how many critters it's accounted for during it's first 94yrs., before I got it 2yrs. ago.

Upon reflection I realized that every deer I killed in the last 20 yrs. has been with something built Pre-War. Shucks I don't even own a rifle newer than about 1955, including .22's. As an aside I've dropped a bunch of ducks this year with a 1924 vintage L.C.Smith. Old guns (and old guys!) rule.
After last years deluge on opening day, I bought a Tikka T3 stainless/synthetic 7mm-08. That will be the primary so I can 'blood' it. I was going to take my Ruger 270 as backup and leave the 358 Brush Gun at home but the Ruger is throwing shots all over the place so it looks like the 358 will be going along instead.

Dale
99 F (premil.) .358 Winchester as primary. Nikon scope, scope looks out of place but the K-4 El Paso Weaver crapped out this year. Hand load; 200 Grain Hornady spire point @2400 fps.

Marlin 30AW is wife's gun, straight stock with a Nikon Buckmaster on it. 150 gr. Winchesters

Back up is a Savage 110 synthetic in .270. Has the cheap scope but shoots good enough to go out to 200 yards. 115 gr. Managed Recoil Remingtons, gun REALLYlikes them, excellent groups.

Remington 7 Mannlicher in 260.
Remington 600 in 257 Roberts.
Remington 700 in 257 Roberts.
Remington 870 in 20 gauge (for IA).
Savage 11 FNS (Accu-Trigger) in 22-250.
Savage 11 FNS (Accu-Trigger) in 257 Roberts.
Winchester/USRA 70 stainless Ultimate Shadow in 25 WSSM.

Jeff
Probably...

EG in .300 Savage with a Lyman All American 2.5X post+crosshair. Rifle was purchased here, and the scope was a very nice gift from a Campfire Compadre.

Rem. Model 7 in .243

Hunting season is over for me, so I took out an AK-47, and some 30 round mags to blow away.
just might use the 300eg i just picked up but having a hard time leaving my 358 at home ? na i'll bring both and flip a coin
Maybe the first time in 20 years w/o a 99 on the opener. I got a Marlin 336ER in 356 Win. thats screamin to go out.
Well I already got a 2 point(western count)muley with my .308F,I was hoping for a moose but no luck this year.So for the remainder of the season it will either be my .300 EG or my .250EG depending on how I'm feeling on that given day.
Useing a 1899 30-30 H I got from RAS on here this year, has a 7/8 stith Alaskan post, on her now! back up will be my 300sav. EGT also with the same scope & stith! I WISH us all Good Hunting and be SAFE! John
CVA .58 Big Bore Mnt Rifle. I bought it 31 years ago for deer and elk. Didn't see any elk last Oct., maybe Nov (late mzldr season) for deer will bring better luck.
99EG in 300
a 99 in 7mm-08,,300E.G. and a 1920-250-3000
Just my 358 EG, i can get in plenty of trouble with just 1 rifle. Don

Beautiful,,,,,,,,,,,WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
These two at least..

-Savage 99A in 250.
-1941 99EG in 300 Savage wearing a set of stith mounts and a Lyman Alaskan.

RAS
I'm taking my "deer rifle"... a 1953 "EG" in .300 Savage, but I've moved the mid-1960's Redfield 3-9x scope from my pre-'64 Model 70 in .338 Win. Mag. to the "99" due to the outstanding clarity of the old Redfield scope as compared to the scope that was on the Model 99.

But the primary reason I did it was because the old Redfield is from the same era as my "99".

I've also worked up a new hunting load... it's not quite as "fast" as the old load in the warm weather, but it's more consistent (velocity-wise) regardless of air temperature due to the H4895 Powder (one of Hodgdon's "Extreme" powders) which is NOT "temperature sensitive" as was the IMR4895 powder I previously used.

While the IMR4895 yielded 2685 fps at 85, the muzzle velocity dropped down to 2627 fps when I chronographed them at 30... or almost the same M.V. as my new hunting load's using H4895's (2635 fps) M.V. at almost all temperatures.

This "consistent" M.V. proves out to be a REAL advantage because the rifle's M.V. remains the SAME at almost all temperatures whereas with non-"Extreme" powders, the muzzle velocity can vary tremendously (50 fps or more) thus affecting the bullet drop over longer ranges due to the lower muzzle velocities at lower temperatures.

I found 40.8 grains of H4895, 1/10th of a grain less than the published maximum load (40.9 grains) behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, boat-tailed bullet sparked by a standard Winchester primer in "accuratized" Winchester cases yielded a VERY consistency muzzle velocity (2633, 2636, 2636, 2638, 2642 & 2627) which averaged 2635 fps with good accuracy in the 3-shot groups I fired with that load.

This muzzle velocity gives the load a "point-blank-range" of 250 yards outta my "EG's" 24-inch barrel... EXACTLY the maximum range I'll take a shot at big game. smile

Strength & Honor...

John,

Please post a pic of that rifle with those mounts, preferably with a deer. That is a sweet rifle. Last time I sold one here was to Steelhead. He shot two big bucks w/ it in Alaska using a tang sight. Hopefully, you will have the same luck.

Jeff
99a in 250-3000 when I'm huntin my land.

might pack the 300EG some.

was hopin to hunt the 1899B in 32-40 this year but haven't had time to work up loads...
Will Be taking my savage model 99c in .308 with the 150 grain hornady interlocks coming out of the tube. If I decide to go for mulies I will take the Rem 700 -06 out.
This year I will be taking a 99F in 300 Savage made in '57. The rifle has a Marbles tang sight and 3/32 flat front bead. I had the original sights on the rifle, but I just couldn't hit with them. Unlike RonT, I first tried H4895 in the rifle, but couldn't group with it. IMR4895 did just fine though, so I'll be using that with 150gr CorLokts. The other rifle I'll be taking is a Remington 700 in 8x57 with a Weaver 4x.
1950 Savage 99EG .300 with good old fashioned iron sights!
A jug of CC and a jug of Beefeaters. Oh, and a M99 R in .300 and a M99-358.
I'm taking the fellow that stood to my right as I got married. He's takin one of those new fangled plastic stocked Savages. I told him I couldn't take him if he brought a Rem 710.
Well this is the first year I've been bringing a 99 out. I'm not sure what model it is, but it feels pretty handy, it's a .308, and it's fun to shoot. No "deer" yet, but this guy was in the wrong place at the wrong time last week:

Looks like a 99a Saddle Gun (postmil). Nice little rifles! Great wolverine!
I'm taking a 1955 F in the .300 Savage. Luepold 1-piece base with Luepold double extension rings on a VX1 2X7X33. First year with it. It will feel different for sure as I've carried a 54 EG since I was 16.

5 days and counting

Hey All:

Been using a rifle my deer old Dad gave me and it's been very useful...1941 .300 Savage EG. Sighted it in recently and put a group of shots together from 50 yards. Longest shot where I hunt in WI is maybe 125 yards..too much brush and trees. Think I've taken about 13 deer, most of them at about 50 to 80 yards. Can't wait!

Take care and good luck and be safe!

Derin
358 EG Lyman Alaskan 2.5 with redfield base with pop up peep.358 pre-mil F also.

Mike
I'll be using a 1951 EG in .250-3000 with a Lyman peep sight (the rifle is not tapped for scope mounts) and my handloads of 87-grain Speer spitzers. Also, a 1966 F in .358 with 180-grain Speer FNs and a Lyman 57SB peep. I hunt in places where the range is close, so don't really need a scope.

Dan
Guys Lets all try to get some pics, of our Deer & 99s this season! Hopeing that we all do good! Best of LUCK to ALL ! John
308 F lyman 2.5 (but looking hard at the VX-1 2-7x33) unless my 250-3000 shows up in time to get sited in. Got a 300 EG that I was thinking of throwing a Lyman 2.5 on and taking for "back-up" or for any hunting after a first kill.
John
Also got 6 Black Bear running around my hunting land.Going Nuciance hunting tonight with the shotgun and Flashlight its a blast.Got a friend who got a 13 point last week.Special permit of course.I will take pictures if I get one tonight.Have to turn in the antlers to DEC. cry

Remember RIGHT CKICK to "save picture as." grin grin grin
358R topped with a Leupold 3-9X compact. Very accurate with my handloads.

I'll be using my 1959 99 eg in 308. IT'S ONE FINE GUN.
Here's my 2 point with the .308

Was lucky enough to fill both my buck tags.Shot this broken horned buck opening day with my 1899 250-3000.
Shot this 24" 4-point on the last week of season with my pre-64 Winchester 264 mag at 250 yards.
Wow! I guess I'm retiring to the wrong end of California!

Those are blacktail - right? Never hunted them when I lived there; was to caught up in fishing. Might have to reset my priorities...
Lets see, what did I choose this year!
Kimber 84M .257 Roberts
Savage 99F 250-3000
Savage 1899 Short Rifle 38-55
Savage 99F .303 Sav.
Will try to kill 3 deer between PA. and MD. but I will probably get SKUNKED!
Was hoping to take my 99EG and 99E, .300 Sav. and .308 Win. respectively, but back-to-back surgeries for my wife and I prevented me from sighting them in in time for opening day, this Saturday. So, I'll go with a Winchester 88, .308 Win. and a Rem. Model 7, stainless synthetic, 7mm-08.
I will be carrying my 99 early E in .303. I just got back from a few days hunting in the Adirondacks and was very happy with how it carried. A friend missed one in the thick stuff. Our last day to hunt it finally cooled down, and snowed. My nephew got on the track of one early and dogged him a good part of the day before giving up. That buck was hunting for a girl and wouldn't slow down. At one point I was posted at the inlet to a beaver pond and the buck crossed at the dam. Invisible to me due to all the snow clinging to the trees. Maybe next time!
I haven't hunted in over 30 years, but this year I'll be going out with my father-in-law with my 99E in .308 Win. I'll also be carrying a S&W Model 25-5 (8-3/8" barrel) in .45 Colt in a Lou Alessi shoulder rig.

Depending on the range I just might have to set aside the Model 99 and take a shot with the revolver! I love those sights!

Yes!
hunting starts saturday for me...I will be taking my 99C in .243 for sure...the 308 F did not perform for me at the range (I am not blaing the rifle...yet) I am going to grab it and my brand new leupold scope tomorrow and if time permits and I can sneak to the range early (oh its going ot be a real mess there tomorrow) I may try it again and if all goes well it will be my go-to gun....either way I am shooting a 99 for sure...
