Hunting season is over for me, so I took out an AK-47, and some 30 round mags to blow away.

Well I already got a 2 point(western count)muley with my .308F,I was hoping for a moose but no luck this year.So for the remainder of the season it will either be my .300 EG or my .250EG depending on how I'm feeling on that given day.

It's all bow and black powder this year... six deer between my partner and I. This one my partner took 20 minutes into the season at 7:09 AM on Oct. 1. We've been enjoying the pepperettes and salami/ summer sausage for a couple of weeks now. Beautiful,,,,,,,,,,,WAY TO GO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm taking my "deer rifle"... a 1953 "EG" in .300 Savage, but I've moved the mid-1960's Redfield 3-9x scope from my pre-'64 Model 70 in .338 Win. Mag. to the "99" due to the outstanding clarity of the old Redfield scope as compared to the scope that was on the Model 99. But the primary reason I did it was because the old Redfield is from the same era as my "99". I've also worked up a new hunting load... it's not quite as "fast" as the old load in the warm weather, but it's more consistent (velocity-wise) regardless of air temperature due to the H4895 Powder (one of Hodgdon's " Extreme" powders) which is NOT "temperature sensitive" as was the IMR4895 powder I previously used. While the IMR4895 yielded 2685 fps at 85, the muzzle velocity dropped down to 2627 fps when I chronographed them at 30... or almost the same M.V. as my new hunting load's using H4895's (2635 fps) M.V. at almost all temperatures. This "consistent" M.V. proves out to be a REAL advantage because the rifle's M.V. remains the SAME at almost all temperatures whereas with non-"Extreme" powders, the muzzle velocity can vary tremendously (50 fps or more) thus affecting the bullet drop over longer ranges due to the lower muzzle velocities at lower temperatures. I found 40.8 grains of H4895, 1/10th of a grain less than the published maximum load (40.9 grains) behind a 150 grain Nosler Ballistic Tip, boat-tailed bullet sparked by a standard Winchester primer in "accuratized" Winchester cases yielded a VERY consistency muzzle velocity (2633, 2636, 2636, 2638, 2642 & 2627) which averaged 2635 fps with good accuracy in the 3-shot groups I fired with that load. This muzzle velocity gives the load a "point-blank-range" of 250 yards outta my "EG's" 24-inch barrel... EXACTLY the maximum range I'll take a shot at big game. Strength & Honor... Ron T.
It's smart to hang around old guys 'cause they know lotsa stuff...

I WISH us all Good Hunting and be SAFE! John John, Please post a pic of that rifle with those mounts, preferably with a deer. That is a sweet rifle. Last time I sold one here was to Steelhead. He shot two big bucks w/ it in Alaska using a tang sight. Hopefully, you will have the same luck. Jeff

This year I will be taking a 99F in 300 Savage made in '57. The rifle has a Marbles tang sight and 3/32 flat front bead. I had the original sights on the rifle, but I just couldn't hit with them. Unlike RonT, I first tried H4895 in the rifle, but couldn't group with it. IMR4895 did just fine though, so I'll be using that with 150gr CorLokts. The other rifle I'll be taking is a Remington 700 in 8x57 with a Weaver 4x.

Well this is the first year I've been bringing a 99 out. I'm not sure what model it is, but it feels pretty handy, it's a .308, and it's fun to shoot. No "deer" yet, but this guy was in the wrong place at the wrong time last week:
Luck favors the prepared.
