Here is a pretty good video to watch. Proof as I have stated many times on here Heat Treat is not just Heat Treat! Protocol matters!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Haven't finished watching but like the video so far.
So what's a knife maker without a metallurgical microscope to do? Lots of bench testing varying heat treatments on same stock/profile?
I've checked in on kknives a number of times. I like that he is pushing the envelope.
MCH do you have any knives in Rex121? If so, do you notice much of a difference?
121 has no peer! If you require Stainless then S125V.
I have two and another I am on the books for.
Lots of bench testing varying heat treatments on same stock/profile? YES
Roman is a very smart young man. He has sunk a ton of money into his shop. He isn't going to make you what you want, but if you get one of his knives you will see just how much he stands out in a crowd of top end makers. Don't quote me on this but I do believe he shares some information with a few other makers. Remember he has a lot of time and money invested!!!
There are not a lot of guys like myself that are willing to pay for such a high end user. But guys like Phil, Shawn, and Roman are out there catering to guys like myself. Their knives aren't for everyone! They are ground thin and are made for cutting not abusing. Their knives cost more, and for several reasons. 1) they are willing to work with the likes of 121. 2) they are grinding thin (requires time and expensive belts) and also grind wet. 3) They have spent the time and materials in heat treat protocol.
These guys are making quality knives second to none! With the finest steels currently available. I have owned knives from just about all the household (24hourcampfire) names, I have owned at least one from each of the biggest names in knife making (working knives, not art knives) past and present minus a William Scagel. I am not guessing here. By know means am I saying that the household (24hourcampfire) names are not worth of using and buying. They have their place. I would certainly like to see Menefee jump into the high end steels. I would be in line asap! Minus of course the swedge.

Who is Phil, Shawn, and Roman for us nobody’s?
Some m390 I had build a few years ago, by Dale....
Who is Phil, Shawn, and Roman for us nobody’s?
Im guessing Phil Wilson, Shawn from Triple B, and Roman from KKnives_Switzerland.
About your M390 blade, did you notice much of a difference between it and other steels? Nice looking buck!
Not a bit. But I work a critter up, then touch em up. Work several critters up a year, trick for me, is don’t let em get like a butter knife. 😆

That’s why you need the Supa-duper knife steel! You could year after year without touching it up!

Thanks but CPM 154, s35v and A-2 is what I’ll finish the race using. Not worth figuring out and burning up thermocouples for me. I did help skin a elk with Phil Wilson’s first s125v knife. It worked wonderfully but so did my a-2 on my elk laying beside it. I understand very well the mindset and do respect it. Just don’t have a need or desire to spend time with other steels.
Thanks
Rick Menefee

The gospel.
Prolly the same answer you get from most the “household campfire names” makers.
A solution looking for a problem.
I guess I'm a simpleton, I'm very happy to work up a critter without sharpening, then running it 2-3 times through a lansky crock stick,to get razor sharp again... Hank, gene, rick, and cakes wares provide this for me, in several steeles, I'm happy... Since its on a first name basis now. Carry on...
+1 on the simpleton for me.
David, Gene , Charlie, Ken, Dale, Tim, Rick, Mike are some of the makers I’ll suffer with.
Do have a couple in s35vn in the works.
I’ll take GWB’s word for steel over a lab test day......
Dave, you name dropper you!!!!😂
There's a few I don't know there, but I could suffer the s35vn as well....
I'm such a simpleton, I texted Dale the other day for another Wyoming Skinner wearing ram horn scales, I specifically told him, "use whatever Steele you want" , as I trust whomever is doin the work....😁😎👍
Again, carry on.. Grin
Fwiw, I probably worked up more elk last year than 85% of the member's here have killed in their lives.Grin
specifically told him, "use whatever Steele you want
.
You gamblin’ SOB!
The 35super knives are being made by a couple guys i found on Instagram.
Fingers crossed.
Haha, I must trust him?? 😂
Big Dave, you motorboatin gristle you, I'm actually excited to try tims m-4 out, it's probably the sharpest sumbitch I've received yet..
It's probably the heaviest blade I've got, but that's what I ordered, and I'm very happy with the craftsmanship.. Did I mention its a sharp sumbitch? 😂 grin
M4. Got one too.
Where you been? That ain’t for knives...
Got a s30v in bound from Tim.
Maybe it’ll cut up some Summer sausage..
Haha bet you won't be disappointed.
WOW I didn't know I had that power to get all your panties twisted up! Laughing
Carry on please ladies!
No panties twisted.
Orders are in the books.
Geez, big Dave and I were just bullshittin.
Alan, you must do alotta killin/grilin/skinnin every year.

Sharing the ‘fire.
Alan, you must do alotta killin/grilin/skinnin every year.
Skinnin rhinoceros.
That’s not allowed...
Seer’ us bidness.
That's right, this is super steele shiit!!!!😂😂
Like first name basis, kinda stuff!!! Haha
Alan, you must do alotta killin/grilin/skinnin every year.
Never killed anything in my life, maybe one of these days I'll get lucky.
Folks would shiit the meat I've made with old timers, wal mart gerbers etc... Guess now I've got the $ I enjoy nice custom wares... Same goes with rifles I suppose, I've miles of " of bone killed with factory rifles, but I enjoy custom stuff there as well...

You going to be ok? You should really get your condition looked at by a qualified physician!
Although this last run at M4 was fun and interesting, I am thinking along the same lines as Rick Menefee
and will stick with the old faithfuls next time around.
I do have a chunk and some blanks left of the M4, so will do current request and another round (or 2) to finish it off.
Then (if then) I will probably return to CPM 154 and/or S30V----Ho Hum.
The new stuff and what can be done with it is really cool, but.......
I do enjoy the info that periodically gets shared here.

The video is testing the heat treat protocol. I am sure there is slight variance in the blades but from my experience his knifes are very consistent.

What I'm saying is, I have 2 Spydie PM2's. They claim 62HRC, but on my Wilson they average about 60.1 to 60.9 They are .145 at the spine, .016ish behind the edge, and sharpened at 32* The Kasé Knives Shards I've personally played with are .138 and less than.12 behind the edge and sharpened to 30*. Roman offers the slim version all the way down to ridiculous, in the range of .004 behind the edge...ergo, my question: did the reviewer check the HRC, because the claim of 62 for the Spydie is way high per my tester..also, if profile, ie overall and behind the edge thickness isn't taken into account we aren't apples to apples...and finally, he discusses making the edge finish the same, but not the edge angle...again...a huge factor... Not saying anything is amiss, just questions I have re the video...

You drove the nail with behind the edge thickness. The big wheels guys are using are game changers. As for real world using tool
Another point of interest. Rc will change with different surface finishes. I’ve had them up to 1 from a 220 grit finish to a mirror finish. I’ve never saw it but was told from the man. Many steels will gain a Rockwell after a year or so.
... Many steels will gain a Rockwell after a year or so.
That's very interesting. Any idea what is going on?
Austenite transformation
I believe Phil Wilson was who explained it to me
Thanks Rick. I'm not sure I quite grock how it works, but that gives me something to chase down.

I can't say if he checked the Spyderco or not. He may very well have just gone off what Spyderco claims. That doesn't disprove my point that heat treat is not all created equal even within the same HRC. Personally I prefer Vickers over Rockwell.
As for the HRC we could debate this all day as none are taken on or very near the edge.
As for the BTE as it gets thinner yes of course it slices better but that comes with a trade off. The thinner the less stable and tough the edge will be. So that has to be taken into account as well.
Other interesting facts about heat treating. For example slipjoint springs. The standard rc for spring is 50. On my oven with calibrated thermocouple I have a temp spread of 90 degrees on the high end. So if I’m tempering at 1100 degrees to 1190. I get the same Rockwell but at the high end temps I get twice the flexibility. A man has to learn his oven, elements and thermocouple. I buy steel by the lb and a [bleep] load at one time. Different lot numbers same with reloading act different.
