What size wall tent is that?

This is our second camp ( Stone Camp--- built in the 1930's )
Red Camp is our First.

Both camps surrounded by basically thousands of acres of hardwoods -- 270 acres of private hunting in New York attached to 900 acres public Hunting in NY and attached to 2000 acres public hunting in Vermont. Both camps are next to each other at the end of a dead end hollow.
The 1 acre of land my father bought in 1954 for $40 to build it, included forever hunting and restricted woodcutting rights on the remaining 100+ acres of woods that the 1 acre parcel was subdivided out of. Hunting rights can include anyone hunting out of our camp. Present owner ( hunter ) doesn't like it --- but knew it before he bought it. We do respect his property. I had that one in the late 90's. It was a pretty good rig.

Some of you all have some fancy camps. Nothing wrong with that, but it isn't for me.

For deer, elk and antelope here in WY, I usually sleep in the front seat of my pickup. If I eat dinner at all, I just heat up a can of stew on a small single burner stove on my tailgate and eat packaged stuff for breakfast and lunch. I like to be mobile and being fancy with the cooking doesn't work well for me.
If I am in the backcountry for elk or deer, I have just a small dome tent and my jet boil with Mountain House.

If it is going to be dry, sometimes I just use a tarp, like at snowCOCK camp this year.


I have a nice wall tent, but way too much time and energy is wasted getting an actual camp set up for me. When I hunted off horseback it was sometimes different, but not always.

No it was a 2.8. It was very durable but did lack the power going up mountains.

Here is ours. No neat old history. Same bunch of guys for the last 8-9 years. This is actually a cabin our neighbors let us use in exchange for pasture rent. A nice little trout stream about 100' from door.



They put this up for a carport, but we find it more useful for this purpose. Last season we had all five beams with hanging deer and a couple on the ground.

Thanks tzone--- There are about 10 + more camps in the nearby area that I known of and many many more over in nearby Vermont that I never new existed.. Our red camp gets used by a party of 5-7 hunters for the better part of First week of Vermont and First week of New York--- Nov-9th- 24 or so and then weekends. Most of the other camps in the area ,Hunters are hit or miss in and out. We by far have been the most regular since 1972. Camps are in this area a dying breed--- youth love them . for party--- camps were built in the woods in the 40's and 50's--- much larger deer herd and easier to shoot a buck setting at the edge of the farm land 10 miles away than to hunt the bigger woods. Which I understand their reasoning and their type of hunting. Much much more to hunting out of one of these camps with family and friends in breaking bread and drolling grog in front of a fireplace than figuring out which way the wind is blowing before you take that last piss 100 yards before you approach your deer stand that frosty morn. You already know how I feel about yours.

I had one with the 4.3. Biggest POS I've ever owned. Spent more time fixing it than driving it. Something broke every other week. The engine was the only thing on that heap that was any good at all. Got a Ford Explorer and then a Jeep Wrangler and now a Jeep Grand Cherokee. All were/are are WAAAAY Better than that sorry POS S-10 Blazer. You didn't miss a thing but headaches.

Nice! About the only bird left on my bucket list, always threatened to do it but never have, how did you do? I went after the white tailed ptarmigan here in Utah a few times and got into them around kings peak and gunsight pass in the Unitas at around 12,000 ft . Probably a similar hunt?

I used to operate like that. Hated any kind of cooking or camp chores.
Use a wall tent or trailer now when hunting with friends. Have used the wall tent for years but I hate set up and tear down.

More often than not I’m solo hunting deer, got this for a base camp. Sets up fast and is solid.as you can see I hate having to go to town for propane

I jumped 5 or 6 coveys, but like normal, most jumped way out of range. I also belly crawled up to this covey in the pic below, but at about 60 or so yards they realized something was up and dove off a 1000 foot cliff. If you look close, you'll see 5 or 6 snowCOCK. Picture was zoomed way in at about 200 yards with a cheap camera, so bluritud is a given.




That said, I did hit one HARD out of another covey but it kept sailing and made it to some other cliffs. I got to where I safely could and glassed for a few hours trying to locate him and hope he'd flutter and fall off, and land somewhere I could safely get to him. No dice. I have yet to kill one but every time I have gone, I have got shots. Not good shots mind you, as normally I have a 1000 foot cliff on one side of me, a 70% talus slope on the other, and I try twisting around loose rock to get my shot.

Lots of goats though.

I don’t hunt in or out of a deer camp anymore. 2011 was my last year to belong to a lease.
It’s nice & convenient hunting at home or 3 mi away BUT

I do miss the camp FIRE and FUN of hunting companions.

I’ll look and see if I can find any old paper pix of former deer camps.

Rooster, addressing the trigger pull weight is the first thing I did after purchase. A local gunsmith worked on the hammer and sear and it is now 3 lbs.

The camps, at least in PA, seem to be a dying thing. Lots of them up north don't even open anymore. Or if they do it'll be one or two people there. It was good to see in this thread that some camps are still up and going.

I have to miss bear season this year due to work and I hate to miss. But I'll have it scheduled off next year for sure.

Lots of vacant camps in our area that used to be regularly occupied for the opener. Iconic names, well known in our area routinely sit empty now. Places like Camp Misery, The Plastered Bastards, and Bear's Den haven seen hunters in well over a decade. I really think QDM ran a lot of guys out of the woods. Not saying I am, or am not a fan, just saying it has played into the decline. Big camps in our area that used to have well over 10 cars parked at them seldom have more than two or three these days. Truly is a shame to see such a time honored tradition on an obvious decline.

A lot of deer camps in Northern Wisconsin have closed, including the one my Grandad and his sons owned since the 1930s. The main reason is the deer herd has been significantly reduced by hard winters, state and federal forestry practices, wolves and bears.

Very true words ROundoak. I was in Price co this weekend and see that the deer numbers are looking up. My son Chas and I walked a good 3 miles Saturday grouse hunting. To our amazement my son went on a 2 mile walk , shot at a grouse and saw 4 deer. In the 3 mile walk we came across 2 buck rubs and a scrape. People find this hard to believe but that is a vast improvement from a few yrs ago . The state wont cut a single tree in the Flambeau River State Forest but the county is cutting everything and the deer numbers have improved despite having snow on most of the ground on April 25 this year. Although it is not fair to just blame the bear , wolves and hard winters . You forgot poachers too. Here is my deer camp that had 8 guys in it in 1989. Now it is down to Chas and I. West side of Price co. Wis. is tough country but I like it. We also catch fish there too. I bought the 7 ac. with 300' South Fork Flambeau River frontage for $3,000. When I told my dad he threw a fit till he saw the land.

Good looking camp and that river frontage is definitely a plus.

Clearcuts ‘seem’ damning to hunting AT FIRST but the REgrowth and NEW growth where it was NOT before is heaven for deer.
It depends on locale and the areas.natural vegetation but in a couple of years the amount of natural food AND cover will host and hide (protect)
deer & other wildlife.

Sad to hear about the deer herd in WI. Here in LA, we had very few deer in the 60's I was told. I was just a little whippersnapper at the time. But I remember daddy and papaw telling about the introducing some Wisconsin "blue deer" around here. Every time someone would kill a deer with a grayish coat and a nice rack, people would go on and on about it being one of those "blue deer" from Wisconsin. Very sad now to hear the deer herd is struggling. Probably wouldn't want any of our little ol' deer from here these days, but I would be willing to send some back to y'all if you want them. Right now we have plenty it seems.

We also hunt the clear cuts in northern WI. However, the country is quite a bit different than where iHookem hunts. We are NW WI, sand country. The cuts regrow in red pine and scrubby oak. Not a lot for acorns as far as I can tell. But, the cuts grow up in waist high grasses and tag alder/dog wood type brush before the red pines get big enough to matter much.

But IHookem is right. Most of the logging is done county specific. The state lays off the logging on their land as do most of the timber companies by us because they’re not ready to cut...too young. And of course on the National forest it’s a miracle if something gets logged.

I’m not sure if we are just in a pocket of deer or just lucky, but, we have no problem seeing deer at most hours of the day. Not a lot of big WI bucks of lore, but some damn fine ones. We have nothing huge on camera. I would say the biggest is 110-120”. It’s public land so, those don’t get a pass by many guys.

It is necessary to be more specific about "Northern Wisconsin" of which I speak and that is basically north of HW 29. Central and Southern farmland has good or high populations.

Here is a "blue deer" that I shot a few years ago in a river bottom where typically I find that color phase.

Back in the late 70's I believe I spent many a weekend at one of these camps. Buddy's step dad was a hunting partner in one of these. Use to camp out in the summer and ride his dirtbike in the fields that were on the side of the road before you got to the camp. Haven't been back since and I have lived less than 15 miles from them my whole life! Wasn't the south hollow camp a school house that was moved to that location?

I live near some of the big forests here in central PA. It is sad that the camps are pretty much empty. Peak is the first weekend for buck, then they are pretty well evacuated. Camp prices are down, and they tend to sit on the market. I was going to buy one mostly to rent for Penn State games. Still undecided.

7887mm08--- I really don't think South Hollow was ever a School House---- I knew the original owner Ted Williams- from Cambridge New York. Ted and a man named Greenway built it soon after WWII. Soon after that Sprague Springs ( The log cabin ) about 1/2 mile up the mountain behind South Hollow was built. South Hollow has been passed down to younger family members which I run into and I'll ask them about once being a School house and get back to you. Lot's of dirt biking there. Very nice place. I would have bought that one in a second. I used to hunt taylor county on nat. forest. Very little logging. Now I hunt in oneida county on county forest. They log every year.

Yes, the county logs a lot more. I didn't get the cabin and land for 3K , just the land . The cabin was another 3K however. Thankfully the taxes on the land and cabin are only $200 a year.

Sounds like a bargain to me.

Unless you count the 20 or so square miles east of Grayling. Hunted near the Lovells area for many years, Now we're NW just off the Manistee.

Old school camp in Bayfield County. 12 x 18 (made out of rejected WW2 airplane wings) and we have had as many as 9 guys in there for the season. Usually 4-6 though these days. Use to be a lot of deer, now they are scarcer than wolves and bear. Great memories, the fire is still hot and everyone still enjoys all the same old stories year after year. Each year we make up new ones. I wish everyone could experience the old camps. A guy stopped in last year and said he just wanted to sit in a real deer camp once more and shared memories of his old camp. Made my day.

My son and his wife will be staying in the Stone Camp while the old timers will be in the Red camp

Just revamped the water system---- New home made water tank to gather the water from the stream to create a head for the Hydro -ram pump that pumps to the 70 gal.tank in the loft of the camp.

You guys sure have some great deer camps. I'm not sure if it's me that missing out or you all though. I hunt on a family farm that belongs to a guy I went all through school with. I killed my first deer there 45 years ago. My deer stand is within 1 1/14 miles of my home and many times I just walk there. I see deer every day and almost always get a nice buck. Nobody bothers me and it doesn't cost a dime. I do find myself thinking I wish some of my hunting friends could be watching everything that I am right now when they tell me they didn't see a thing that day and I've watched several bucks and doe all day long.

I hope to God that you thank your friend, for what he has provided for you over the years, so many guys take it for granted until its gone, you are a lucky man with a great friend,

I am very grateful to him. Every time I sit in that deer stand and have the time of my life I think of how fortunate I am to be able to be a guest at his farm. I never abuse anything in regard to being there. He's helped me drag deer out of the woods and offered me his tractor with a loader if I need it. We both grew up with what he does for me being standard practice. He told me the other day I have a place to hunt as long as we both live. Yes I am very blessed and especially to have a friend like him.

Great photos of some "old school" type of deer camps! Here is one that I (and many others) used to be a member of. This is out in the National Forest here in Virginia on private property, butting right up to the GWNF. Log cabin, built in (I think) 1939, no running water, no heat (except a fireplace), but at least it has electricity (very limited -- only a few power outlets with the old style screw-in Buss fuses).

Still don't understand what happened, back around 2008/2009. Who said what, who did what, who pissed off who, family feud type of thing... Oh well, that was the end of it. Someone changed all the locks and booted us all out!

Catskills Deer Camp

Nothing fancy, But its warm and dry and its in the woods. Its deer camp. A nice campfire, family, friends, and good food. Wish I was there right now.

Posted elsewhere but again won't hurt.

Shower set up.

Collect rain off the shed. Shower built in back section of shed.



Into instant hot water deal.



Into the walled off portion in the back. Add a Menards shower set up, hooks and bench - nice way to was off the stink and it does make really hot water. Generator runs the pump so may as well have lights and exhaust fan too.







Decorate

Our camp is three miles of backpacking in the high country. We take Folgers showers, five eight penny nails holes in the bottom of a coffee can hanging from a tree.

We are a little more upscale than you . We cut a hole in the loft floor , stuck a 5 gal bucket with a 1/4 " hole with a home made shower . It is amazing how nice a 1 gallon shower is .

Glad you posted up pictures of your hunting camp, again.

In one hunting camp we have a rustic shower setup in a shed. Wash tub with hose hooked to it and a hole in floor to drain. Shower curtains and solar water bags. If the sun is not used we heat water on the wood stove.

I’m doing the tent camp in the High Peaks region of the Adirondacks again this year. Going in the second week of November for 2 weeks hopefully. I can’t wait!!

I did, I got a decent 10 point on our property in the flatlands. The mountains didn’t give up anything. I’ve got some new plans this year, hunting higher elevations and more remote. I have lost 20 pounds of fat in the past year, and I’m going to be hitting it hard.

I hear you on the weight loss. Good job! I've lost 42lbs of Covid weight since May, and can't weight to chase Oregon blacktails. I have a flight in 2 weeks.

The shower set up - really very easy and cheap sans the shed/build out. With 2 barrels linked together and NOT taking Hollywood showers - it's great for the whole crew.

I like your shower setup. Looking to do something similar at our overflow bunkhouse. We have running water but the pressure is too low to consistently operate a tankless heater.

I was thinking of placing a pump between our water source and a tankless heater much like you have done. Looking at the picture, is that two pumps you have in line or a filter system and pump?

I notice (or appears) you have all your equipment, except water barrels, inside. How much heat does the tankless put out considering the wood structure around it?

Are there any recommendations you would give for someone looking to do a similar setup?

It's a filter and pump.

Correct on equipment - not much heat at all. We keep the showers short and because it's basically instant - it's not on a long time 'getting warm". Don't know if I'd worry about that tho - they've got good spacing around the internals and we mounted direct to the wall - no issues at all.

There's nothing we'd really change on it. Our issue is being worried about freezing. The shed it's in - not heated or insulated so when nights get low as they're about to - we drain it and prep for freezing - especially the inside. It's not a good set up for rifle season - temps in the single digits. If there was an easy way to have the barrels inside AND ensure none of the hoses could freeze - would be better but this is pretty off grid - we are 40 acres off the road, no electricity save a Honda generator so there's no easy way to provide low heat to the area and keep it from freezing.


If you're in TX - probably not a concern at all.

It's 100% rain water - I'd not recommend it for drinking - we just use it a lot in the summer/early season to extend our time up there - rinse dirt/mud off etc. Feels like a million bucks after 3 days of cutting wood or whatever in summer temps.

You are correct - in S TX it will get down to freezing at times but not often and not for long. In the forty's we are putting on the heavy winter gear . Thanks for the information - think I will move forward with a similar plan.

No need for the wood stove this year as it was very warm.
