Appreciate any input. Last time I had a dog it was the good ol'days and we just let them roam and those days are gone.

For in the house moreso than truck travel. Will be a growing puppy. Working on a kennel outside too. Is vinyl flooring viable on a wooden deck?

Brands to look at or characteristics to look for? I saw some rotomolded ones at Sportsman's, RuffTuff, that look like they may be worth the price premium?

Other related dog habitat considerations? Appreciate anyone's time and input on this.
Have a Gunner Kennel for my Boykin. Might be more than you need/want. I really like it though.
Those look excellent, and they have financing. Thanks.

I use a Vari-Kenel, 23”Lx19”Hx19”W. New about $50.00. Perfect size for a 25-30 lb. beagle. Light with a center handle for carrying (even with the dog in it), easy to open and close and just hose out to clean. The beagle loves it.
Ruff tuff are great. Stays in truck and is bombproof. Gunner are great for double the $$$$
Appreciate it guys. I suppose sitting in the house, super duty is not so necessary.

Counting down the weeks. I am so excited, uhhhh, I mean the kid is.... grin

32" camo Petmate Ruffmax is looking pretty good for a price we'd be happy with, $65 delivered... I think ours is larger version beagle.

I ordered it already. Fingers crossed. It'll get us going without breaking the bank.

Thanks guys getting me thinking.

Figured I might have more questions and could expand here.

We have plenty of prickly pear here, it's a concern. Hmmmmm?

Thank you. Absolutely.
I know of no dog more fun and lovable than a beagle.

But the price for that is their independent streak and their hard-headedness.

Always remember that a beagle lives for it's nose and it's prey drive.

If you think it's time to go in the house but the beagle just discovered an enticing scent there will be a delay.

If you're late to your wedding but the beagle just ran a varmint off the property and was last heard going across the ridge a quarter mile away, there will be a delay.

If this doesn't sound like fun to you you might be better off with a different dog.
And yes, you can break a beagle of this. But you won't like the result.

If you can live like this you'll have a dog that will tussle ferociously all day long with the older kids, snuggle all day long with the younger kids, and sleep like a rock snuggled in the small of your back.
And varmints will be few on your home place.
I have had Beagles for years. They are my breed.
I find females to be a bit more "manageable" than males.
IMO, all effective Beagle training involves the extensive use of treats. Beagles are essentially a nose hard-wired to a stomach.

These are the two I have now, both about 4 years old

She’s a doll! Long ears and nice symmetrical face. Enjoy!
My beagle, Trooper is 9 years old and h'es my buddy. He's got some serious allergy issues and his skin gets really red and irritated this time of year. He stays on appoquel and an antibiotic. I had him allergy tested last week and am waiting for the results. He's been a blast that's for sure. I used to love it when he'd charge off the back porch and get in a mexican stand off with the whitetail does that come in the yard. He never caught the rabbit that hung out in the back yard, but he'd give it hell trying to catch him. Like one other poster noted, if he gets on a trail you're not going to get him back for awhile. Mine got after the deer once and it was four hours before he finally came back, exhausted.

We had him fixed and he bailed off the back porch with the cone around his neck and went after the deer one evening. I went after him and finally caught him about an hour later. I just knew he was going to tear his stitches up, but he didn't. I, on the other hand, tore the meniscus in my left knee chasing his butt and wound up having surgery about a year later.

Beagles, being short haired hounds, shed like nobody's business. Both my beagle and my boxer are house dogs so I have to vacuum at least once a day.

Trooper is a very loving and fun dog. Enjoy yours!
With a beagle as stated above the nose rules. When that nose gose down the brain goes off. But I do love em so.

Zofia is blowing her summer coat now, hard to believe that much fur could come off a 28 lb. dog.

YES to the above!

Beagles aren't perfect, but a beagle is a great dog for kids!

This thread is a great contrast to the the latest Pit Bull thread on the 'Fire LINK-- even without reading it, you know that it is going to be about one or more Pit Bulls killing or mutilating somebody.

A beagle thread, on the other hand, is much more likely to be about how a beagle puppy licked some kid to death! grin

This one is two months old and nose to the ground, well when not airborne!

With the grace of dog we'll make it home tomorrow.

that is the perfect picture of the beginning of a happy childhood & puppyhood congrats boomer . i can't tell who is the happiest
Hopefully you didn't teach them any choice words on your way through the CDA area.
Made it home (top pic) safe and sound, 1050 miles. Got her acquainted with mom, and the yard, and a full belly, took a dump and then I made the command decision to let her nap. Out in two minutes snuggled up in the crate just like it was meant to be.

Oh man thanks!
The girls are in charge now.

We've got two, about four years old. They'll eat anything, chew on everything when they're young. A kevlar dog bed lasted 2 days. Underground fence works somewhat, use the stubborn dog collar. Rabbit or cat runs thru the yard forget it. They keep the raccoons out of the trash. I don't consider em guard dogs because they sleep when they're not playing. Get a good collar with your phone number on it. When I have mine out (on the farm) I run bells on their collars so I can find them when they're not trailen. Spent many hours of my days looking for them. They're the clown of the dog world. Used to run coonhounds when I was younger, beagles are my favorite now.
Biggles are cool.....
Wow, simple Pleasure of walking around with a puppy... And I have finally determined why the heck we have lawns, it's for the dogs!
i am glad the girls let you have a turn with the puppy grin

hey MtnBoomer!

Post some more pictures of the puppy, preferably with your offspring enjoying it!

Pictures with you and that vicious beast will do, however! laugh

John
You should see her laying back for me to work the belly rub magic! Nice having a lil' pooch around.

Things are going well. When we're doing our part the house training is working. The daughter can out play the pup, that's for sure and can outrun the little bugger still.

Here's some action. First time barking that we've heard, and she's wondering what to think. So far insects in the grass seems to interest her wayyyy too much. Bunny scent makes her very serious but hasn't caught sight of it yet!
She'll whine to get to that pink bed shown above. I got the puppy love pretty bad, along with mom and kid.

Oh, IAMS puppy seems to be doing the trick. Pure bliss.

Glad to see you've been pumping iron to facilitate carrying your new Sig thingy.

That's the daughter's work out device smartguy! We tell her she will need to be strong and fast to keep the boys from catching and kissing her! laugh
Standby for the bunny tracking video! Ohh yah.

Got home this morning at dawn. Pup was outside and I grabbed her up. Went around back and I spotted a bunny. So I held her out facing that way and she saw it take off. I set her on the trail and she got sooo excited. The video is after following about 30 yards, starting to get mixed up... . First she's had hot scent.. Guess she saw Antelope yesterday too and got serious. Love it!

Damn! The sound takes me right back to a pup I had 5 decades ago! :I was a very young pup then too....! grin:

Looks like you got a good pup indeed -- worth the long drive to get her I'm sure!

The bunny community should be shaking in their furry little booties!

Now, I'm going to watch and listen to the video again! smile

Hi John. Part 2

She’s a real Champ, lots of drive when performing the work of the breed.
This is my life now. laugh

This pup is a hoot. I cut off a bit of deer antler with an angle grinder. I think the scent of the fresh cut was a bit intense for her. On the downside she has grown but not enough to NOT be able to get through the fence. Have made good progress in her trying to chew us, thankfully. Give and take.
You brought a big smile to my face!

Lovely daughter, lovely beagle!

John
nice life you got boomer . enjoy it
What a great thread- congrats for the pup and the joy it's bringing.
Great thread, one of the best of the year....Thanks for posting...
Oh boy, I better fess up. Thanks for all the good words guys. This past week got rough and, although no fault of the pup, she was just being a pup, she fell out of grace with mom and the kid, and me too by default. The wild play with the kid seemed to cause her to forget important lessons. She got to nipping on my daughter, and ignoring us (as I'd been warned), and heading out to squeeze through the fence. So, it became a challenge that, as a family we had to face the reality that a beagle pup was not going to be the right fit. It wouldn't have been good of me to insist we force it. Dangit.

Yesterday, she moved on to a home on 30 acres in the woods in NW Montana. A retired couple with a rat terrier and a pretty good understanding of the challenges ahead. It's going to work out good for them all.

We learned a lot and the pup is no worse for it, happy as always. Sigh.
Here's a note we got from the new owners this morning. Sounds like she's in good hands.

Hi, Just a note to let you know Jager has become the best friend and source of entertainment for us. Dexter and Jag chase around the couch playing keep away with stuffed toys until exhaustion. We have a large fenced garden and put those two in there to run and dig and burn even more energy. The first night she got me up every two hours, last night she had an eight hour run. We like that she gives us plenty of warning when she needs to potty. Dexter spent almost his first year kenneled at night and we'll probably do that with her. She is an amazing eater, we have been giving her about a quarter cup every few hours until we hit a couple cups. Otherwise I think she'd really overeat. I usually free feed Dexter, but the first evening she wolfed down about 2 to 3 cups before I r realized how quickly she eats! What a talkative lover she is, we are so impressed with her. Shockingly, she is very calm and listens so well, but is a total puppy when they play. I will let you know occasionally how she is doing. Thank you so much for a wonderful pup.
You do know that you can’t let beagles roam. They will travel for miles and aren’t likely to survive an encounter with coyotes.
Amazing baying!

Just saw this, wished I knew and lived closer. Beautiful pup, would’ve loved to have her.
