Starting things off for this year.....
Wyoming opener on Sept 26th. My M70 Alaskan in 338 Win Mag 225 grain Nosler Partition. About 200 yards and uphill.
Very nice, classic combo there....
Nice! When's supper
Nice! When's supper
Picked it up from processor this afternoon, supper tomorrow night for sure!
Congrats on taking your bull with such a classic rifle.
Congrats. Love Elk Hunting and Pre 64's. I believe the 338 is Big Medicine too!
M 70 Featherweight .270 Winchester
Ken,
You are under gunned for that wabbit. Good grief man where is the 460 Wby mag?
Stunt shooting,Irfubar. Although did use a 130 gr Trophy Bonded Tip on the wabbit.
The .460 is on vacation until fall hunting seasons are over. May bring it back out in early March.
Aaah yes , stunt shooting, a campfire mainstay. Just glad you weren't injured by the wabbit.
Thanks Irfubar,it was a close one,I killed it before the charge started.
Hopefully will have some pics from my deer hunt next month.
Was lucky and blessed enough to harvest this little beauty last week, thanks to my (poorly compensated) guides and newfound friends BobCape (Bob) and APDDSN0864 (Ed) and my road buddy Mannlicher (Sam), without whom none of which would have been possible.
Thanks to an invite from eh76, several antelope and at least one mule deer (last I heard) were harvested. Several whitetail had been spotted prior to our arrival, but the recent squatter's rights actions of a burly moutain lion spoiled the action in the nearby creek bottom.
The trip out and back was 5300+ miles and I am feeling my Wheaties, but would not have traded the experience for anything.
This approx. 120 lb doe was taken with a '56 Model 70 .30-06 Featherweight using 150 gr Federal Blue Box SP.
Best Wishes to all at camp: Keith, Sam, Woody, Jeremy, Bob, Ed, Doc, Bryan, Casey, Ryan, and Sheldon. Hope to see you all again in the future.
PS- our campsite had been thoughtfully appointed with some exquisite designer lawn furniture prior to our arrival.
Very nice local dirt and good eating for sure! As for the furniture, will gladly take that for the yard here!
congrats to Razz on the nice Bull and Local dirt for the pronghorn! Great pics too!
Son filled his tag yesterday morning with his p64 30-06. 180 grain Nosler Partition.
Congrats all around and some really good pics.
Winchester M 70 Featherweight .270 Win.
Nicely done guys. Got to take my pre 64 270 fwt bear hunting for a couple days earlier this fall but nothing more planned til next spring. I am determined to be on a killing spree next year!

Opening morning Coues with M70 6.5-06
Dang Mike, That's a great thick racked buck. Congrats!
Mike, what stock is on your 6.5-06 and how do you like it?
My daughter and I.
It's the McMillan Hunter's Edge. Like the forend and grip a lot for hunting, wish the comb were a little higher. Just picked up a second one for my pre 64 30-06 featherweight today.
I love seeing kids with their critters and their Winchesters! Oh, and old guys with carbines too!
My critter, she went along to "babysit" the old man. Cause my wife was worried about me hunting in the mountains.
Great pictures all! Been hammer the post oak thickets with a 95 in 35 WCF the last couple of weeks. So far one 3 point (should qualify for the dink award) and two hogs. Going out in the morning still after one of the big 8 or 10 points that is hanging around. Need to get Kaywoodie to help me with photo bucket for photos!

Of all the 1886's I always thought those late era .33 WCF's were the bee's knees! Especially the TD models! Nice Rifle 1911!
EdM, That's a great pic really nice rifle.
Thanks.
EdM, Is that Kudu record class? it looks gigantic from that angle in the pic.
Damn Ed!! Great animals!!!
This just in from Postoak Cowboy! Evidently he got serious this morning and drug out his old .300 H&H, built on an old Winchester M1917 receiver and barrel. Put together by old Austin gunsmith JF "Buster" Kreuz over 50 years ago.
I think he's happy with him!
And I'm sure PETA would love this!!
Edm those are awesome! Love the Kudu!!
That buck I got this morning is my best so far. The barreled Winchester Action is dated 2/17! Figured it was fitting for the old Dough Boy!
Poastoak cowboy, Congrats on the chocolate horned Buck he's a dandy!
Kudos for getting your kid's involved in the outdoors.
https://www.24hourcampfire.com/ubbthreads/ubbthreads.php/topics/12422722/muley-buck#Post12422722Shot this guy yesterday with my 1939 Winchester Model 70 30-06 with a 150 Accubond at 100ish yards. He was standing facing me, bullet was recovered in his flank under the hide.
EdM, Is that Kudu record class? it looks gigantic from that angle in the pic.
No, he just very wide which is why I went after him. He measures 53 1/2" so still pretty decent.
Congrats to Postoak Cowboy and Ismith!
There have been several nice mule deer posted! Sure enjoy seeing the mule deer with them model 70s! I hope to get my daughter on a deer with her Model 88 this season.
My son doing his part to fill the freezer with his Featherweight.
My 1886 scored about two weeks ago and I was encouraged to place the pic in the Winchester kills thread.
95 yard shot and she dropped right there. My 86 is a 33WCF loaded with a Hornady 200 grain flat point, 42 grains of 4895. Love this old rifle!

Thanks folks. She's a lot of fun to shoot....accurate too.
Congrats to the young man with The Featherweight!
Another nice 86 in 33WCF!
My granddaughter (postoak cowboy's daughter) busted her first just about an hour ago with her model 88 in .308!
Very nice! Congrats to the young lady!
Very nice kaywoodie. Congrats to her, and the whole family for getting kids involved.
Gotta be proud of your Granddaughter there Bob!! Way to go, that smile says it all! I'm sure you and Grandma were smiling just as big. My granddaughter starts next year, thinking my 88 carbine in .243 is the ticket.
Thats all! Thats Grammie's old rifle she gave her last year for Christmas. Its been a good shooting rifle over the yesrs! Now they both start new chapters in their hunting life!
Yeah Ms Katy did well, one shot about 65 yards. Plus she used her own hand loads!
Pretty sure my winchesters are done for the 2017 season, only small game likely for the remainder.
Buddy was visiting in June and we went out to get some meat/feeder hogs. It was my first ever hog hunt...next time will be spot and stock as shooting them over a feeder was kinda too unclimatic for my taste. Meat was delicious though, loved me some pulled pork sandwiches from the crockpot. Rifle was a 1955 Fwt 30-06, all original with a 180 Interlock, dropped on the spot with a neck shot.
Last saturday I took a nice 8-pt while hunting in my old stomping grounds of Central Pa. We were pushing a swamp and I was a stander. This guy came out, then started running the creek I was over looking. Shot him as he was quartering away running, 110 TTSX through the backbone exit through the far ribcage after tearing through the lungs. Rifle was a SC Fwt 270 in an edge Fwt pattern.
Nice critters TomM1! Porker is perfect size for snackin'! Yum
Congrats to your Granddaughter,Bob!
Congrats to you also, TomM1!
Thanks Ken!! Did you use a Model 70 on your cow??? Inquiring minds wanna know?
Sorry it took so long to answer you Bob,but no,I used a Interarms Mark X in a .35 Whelen.
Hey! That will work too!
My granddaughter (postoak cowboy's daughter) busted her first just about an hour ago with her model 88 in .308!
Congrats to your granddaughter! That's a cool Winchester she's using too!
Congrats and it looks like he had some meat on his bones.
Girls rule!!!! You go girl!!!!

Congrats to all. Nice thread.
Thanks,
But this is my favorite of the year. "You really want to go down there? I can get out fairly easy with four legs and youth on my side. You I'm not so sure. Up to you Bud."
Some pretty cool stuff there Gunner..
Battue, great photos.. the old model 12 16 and your best pal... My college room mate and his son were out for elk.. They got a nice cow.. My room mate missed though.. Forest Hills is their home area.. Have a good one and a Merry Christmas..

You're welcome Gunner! Glad to oblige!
Awesome pics and animals taken with that cool ol 375.
Very cool gunner, hope to do a similar PG hunt myself someday.
Love the Mdl 12 battue, I normally see beautiful SxS in your ruffed pics, good to see the pumps get a workout!
Gunner, did you do a write up on your trip to Africa? I'd love to hear about it.

Thanks BSA, I knew your old rifle would get it done.

Thanks Tom, nice pig you have in the above post too, beware, you go to Africa once, you're bit, hard, I just finished trip number two since the fall of 2015.
Damn right, nice Waterbuck Ed, I looked for one hard and couldn't get it done this trip.
Gunner, did you do a write up on your trip to Africa? I'd love to hear about it.
I haven't done a write up yet BSA, that bullet I sent you came from that Nyala Bull in the last photo.
This hunt was the hardest thing I've had to do in my life so far, two months before the hunt leave date I managed to tear my right shoulder rotator cuff in three places.
No more working out or cardio, I was pounding a prescribed 1800 mgs if ibuprofen daily and eating every carb [fiber] in sight, I was swol up like a fat pup off mamas milk bag on that hunt, it didn't and wasn't gonna stop me, I went ahead with the hunt against two Dr's orders, all animals were hit hard and died quick.
The giant Cape Eland and Sable Bulls aren't pictured, I busted them with 750 grain bullets from my 50-90 Sharps with black powder ;]
Gosh Gunner, blued steel, walnut stock and mounting a Leupold?!? It's a wonder you could kill anything!!
Great job!!
Awesome pictures Gunner. Congrats on a great hunt buddy.
That will get a couple thumbs up. đź‘Ťđź‘ŤWell done!!!!
2017 Buck, 207 yards - one 180gr Hornady BTSP did the trick from the old 30Gov't06.
Minimum of 15 solid kills with Leupold. 5 or so other brands thrown in. Interesting. Of course they sell so many more of them. Hmmmm
Dang fellas! Some more impressive critters!
Well done to all! EdM, Beretzs, centershot!!
Nicely done EdM, Beretzs and Centershot. Interesting observation on Leupolds, have always been a big fan of them.

LOL, Thanks TMitch, another very funny thing about this hunt was having only twenty 375 cal. 275 gr Bitterroot Bonded Core bullets to work with, BSA sent me a bag of 20, I worked up a load [2755 fps] and zeroed the rifle, had the scope get fuzzy, Leupold sent me a new replacement, was able to re-zero the new scope, take one practice shot once in Africa, kill four animals and still have one loaded round left.
Hows that for efficient?
Awesome pictures Gunner. Congrats on a great hunt buddy.
Thanks Beretzs, I appreciate the votes of confidence from yourself and BSA on using these bullets.
Nice Elk too, that SS-II looks good.
Good shooting Ed, is that an Nyala?

X's 3, good going men.
Outstanding work, fellas! Hadn't checked this thread in a while. Am home now recovering from replacement of congenital aortic valve. Got me a pig or cow valve now.
But, I'll be back out at 'em asap.
I took a rescued Pre 64 M70 7MM carbine out last night and dropped a doe. It was to dark for any pictures. Maybe tomorrow with a reduced load for my 375 H&H, another Pre64.
Good shooting Ed, is that an Nyala?
That is a bushbuck,Gunner.
Thanks Elk, I didn't recognize the colors, the bushbuck I shot was near chocolate brown.
You're welcome,Gunner.
Awesome pictures Gunner. Congrats on a great hunt buddy.

I’m a BIG fan of those Swift Sciroccos Gunner. In my opinion they are damned near a modern day Bitterroot. They are some serious BG Bullets and just hammer the 4-5 Elk we’ve used them on. 270-338 and the results have been the same.
10-4, wish they made a 160 in 7mm, it would be a contender for my Mashburn build.

Shoot Gunner, run their 150... That bullet at 3250’ish will not ever leave you missing 10 grains.
That was dug out of this bull at 475 yards.
Apologize for getting off track but these animals were all taken with Model 70’s
Damn, looks nice, guess the .51 BC would stretch to 600 just fine, may run it heads up with the 160 AB and see whick one pans out the best.
THANKS!

Oh yeah. Both are awesome Bullets. Bob and I kinda went back and forth some on the Swift’s. He hadn’t shot any BG with them so a couple of us tried them out that fall (and this year) and I’ve been very impressed with them. They do expand pretty flat and wide so they aren’t going to exit on shots all of the time but to me it’s been a no brainer since animals haven’t really gone anywhere to speak of.
The 338 recovered above was very impressive to me after digging through the wound channel a little. Crushed the on side leg and was tucked in the hide on the far side. Slapped that bull down and I didn’t have enough time to take a second shot when he popped up and rolled down the hill.
Hell of a deal, I couldn't imagine a .338 cal. 300 gr Scirocco at 3K.
;]
I know the 210 at 2950 didn’t stink. I couldn’t imagine a 300 at that sorta speed.
An equal opportunity destroyer.
10-4, wish they made a 160 in 7mm, it would be a contender for my Mashburn build.
Gunner I use the 160gr Speer Grand Slam in a 7X57 AI. It works like the hammer of Thor. Took a lot of big stuff in Africa with it including a cull Giraffe. I wouldn't hesitate to take it elk hunting.

Thanks GSP, I still have a few of the old style 175 SGS's I shoot on my '09 DWM 7x57mm, it's a hell of a bullet as is I'm guessing the 160 you speak of, gonna spin turrets out to 6/700 yards for hunting with my Mashburn, I'm leaning hard towards the 160 gr Accubonds for all game, really like the b.c. for a standard hunting bullet.
I have some of the 160 AB for a custom built 275 Rigby (just to be different you know) but haven't loaded any yet. I have used the 140's with great success out of a rifle I had built in 7MM-08 on a Ruger #1 action and in my M70 7MM carbine....yes it's a pre64
Pretty hard to beat any of the good Bullets out there from 154-180 grains in the Mashburn. It quickly climbed to the top as one of my favorite cartridges. Thinking I’ll be working the 175 PT and BBC for this fall.
Another Winchester kill, youth modern gun is today and tomorrow. There were several doe in the clear cut at twilight when we arrived this morning. We were there less than 10 minutes when this guy showed up.
Classic FWT .270 running 130 Accubond/RL-22. Double lung hit right at 200 yards. He mule kicked and made it 50 back into the timber.
Buck was standing here when he met Mr Nosler. The box stand on the hill in the background.
Way to go Gunnut308! Excellent buck and I love seeing those 270’s still stacking up those bucks!
Feb 2017 feral Duroc sow . Weight estimated at 600 pounds by landowner. It dwarfed other hogs taken (250-300 pounders) .
Shot off hand at 50 yards with pre 64 M70 featherweight .308 - one shot and down. Still eating the breakfast sausage.
Sorry, but forgot to take picture of rifle, you all know what an old M70 looks like anyhow.
I got a small WT buck with my M70 7x57. I'll try to get some pics up when I get a minute.
Hey! Nice shootin' all!!!
Love seeing the young folk with Winchesters and good game!
Bit late to this party (never shot a deer this past fall) but I was invited a few weeks ago to Texas by my good friend and former Ops Officer. I went and had a real good time, used my favorite 270 WIN, M70FW to shoot a small 50 lb pig the last night I was there. The 270 has a Douglas barrel and has always been an accurate rifle; I was pleased with my scope as well. A 70 yard shot into the woods at 8:15 pm, black to my eyesight - however I could actually see the spot for the pigs heart in through that Leupold. My first time to kill a pig or to hunt in Texas.
Good shooting and remember to come back to Texas and kill more pigs!
