Picked up a nice commercial Oberndorf B in 8x57IS today. It’s a real Daisy!!!! Great shooter!

Handsome! What vintage (SN based) and is it all original & matching? Receiver, barrel & butt plate nomenclature? So far a great "teaser"! smile smile smile

Thanks for sharing & Best!

John

Numbers match. Has WAffenfabrik Mauser (WM) gutta percha or whatever it’s made of buttplate. Not the Mauser Banner buttplate. Has a 5 digit SN. I’m speculating either a late pre-wwar one maybe???? I was told 1914 has B crown and U crown proofs. No G proof I can find. Nice bore and sound wood (looks like Italian walnut?). Left side of Receiver in front of thumb cut out marked waffenfabrik Oberndorf A/N.

No Mauser Banner on top of receiver ring.

Ok, appears to be 1913 vintage. I happened upon a SN listing. This rifle is 75XXX range. I know that postwar very few 8x57 cartridge rifles were produced. Treaty of Versailles stuff. So the 8x60 was produced. It’s definitely an 8x57.

Thanks for the additional info concerning your Mauser (capitalized as speaking of the specific Oberndorf Factory product versus non-capitalized "generic" mauser pattern).

Read + visuals as seeming A-OK for Oberndorf Sporter apparent originality! Expecting a hinged floorplate and if not, possibly indicative of a military sporter Model "C", but that "WM" butt plate versus military plate also suggestive of "B" Model as correct.

The 8x57 presumptively correct actually into the early Twenties as Armistice melded into Versailles Treaty & sanctions a creature of early Twenties! About 1932 the "new Fascist Face of Fatherland" emerged. Abandoning the Treaty and returning to 8mm military chambering production, but fewer in commercial context due to strong rearming emphasis!

The first thing I look for in a Obie Sporter is the angular tear-shaped bolt handle. Can't distinguish that but 'assuming 'there'... Large "originality hurdle" past! Next, all matching numbers as more than just "icing" to collectors. It's the realm of - all original - the larger bucks formula.

The above suggestion to D&T for scope... Your rifle, your call! But also your responsibility for care and preservation of rifle as Obie "art" when intact. Oh yes, and depreciate value by perhaps 50%. Assuming whatever aperture sight, to be "swappable" back to original... Go for it. Otherwise back to 50% valuation possibly!

The absence of receiver ring nomenclature or factory pattern adornment is common and while such collector Viagra, absence no condemnation at all.

Whew~

Congraats!
Best!

John,

Thank you for your helpful input!!!!!

No fears about mounting a scope. Also has hinging floorplate with the typical lever release. I have reservations about any modifications to this old mädel and will probably just keep her as is. Just too nice to mess with. PS, teardrop bolt handle present!!!

I have another suspect Model B that I need to post here and tell the history I know of it. It is definitely more of a user rifle. It’s a 1934-35 vintage piece. It’s interesting to say the least.

Nice gun Kaywoodie.
Posted By: 8MMX57JS Re: New family member - 11/14/23
You mention that it's 8x57IS which would have the .323" bore. Last time i looked into prewar Oberndorf Mauser's i came to learn they were made with a .318"-321" bore. (8x57I). Be sure to double check, you wouldn't want to damage such a nice rifle.

Thanks for sharing, you enabler! Now I simply must go look up this cocking piece sight. Wonderful rifle. Look at that forend!

Looking forward to you taking some game with it and posting pics.

That is one pretty piece of wood on a wonderful representation of the gun makers art. I must admit I am a bit jealous. Use her as she was intended in the field.

They switched to the JS version of the 8mm Mauser in 1905 with the current 0.323 groove diameter. A 1913 8mm Mauser would be the updated version.

Nice rifle. I recently entered the 8mm Mauser business myself with a BRNO.
