Thanks for the additional info concerning your Mauser (capitalized as speaking of the specific Oberndorf Factory product versus non-capitalized "generic" mauser pattern).
Read + visuals as seeming A-OK for Oberndorf Sporter apparent originality! Expecting a hinged floorplate and if not, possibly indicative of a military sporter Model "C", but that "WM" butt plate versus military plate also suggestive of "B" Model as correct.
The 8x57 presumptively correct actually into the early Twenties as Armistice melded into Versailles Treaty & sanctions a creature of early Twenties! About 1932 the "new Fascist Face of Fatherland" emerged. Abandoning the Treaty and returning to 8mm military chambering production, but fewer in commercial context due to strong rearming emphasis!
The first thing I look for in a Obie Sporter is the angular tear-shaped bolt handle. Can't distinguish that but 'assuming 'there'... Large "originality hurdle" past! Next, all matching numbers as more than just "icing" to collectors. It's the realm of - all original - the larger bucks formula.
The above suggestion to D&T for scope... Your rifle, your call! But also your responsibility for care and preservation of rifle as Obie "art" when intact. Oh yes, and depreciate value by perhaps 50%. Assuming whatever aperture sight, to be "swappable" back to original... Go for it. Otherwise back to 50% valuation possibly!
The absence of receiver ring nomenclature or factory pattern adornment is common and while such collector Viagra, absence no condemnation at all.
Whew~
Congraats! Best! John John, Thank you for your helpful input!!!!! No fears about mounting a scope. Also has hinging floorplate with the typical lever release. I have reservations about any modifications to this old mädel and will probably just keep her as is. Just too nice to mess with. PS, teardrop bolt handle present!!! I have another suspect Model B that I need to post here and tell the history I know of it. It is definitely more of a user rifle. It’s a 1934-35 vintage piece. It’s interesting to say the least.

You mention that it's 8x57IS which would have the .323" bore. Last time i looked into prewar Oberndorf Mauser's i came to learn they were made with a .318"-321" bore. (8x57I). Be sure to double check, you wouldn't want to damage such a nice rifle.

That's a great Mauser sporter.
Looking forward to you taking some game with it and posting pics.

That is one pretty piece of wood on a wonderful representation of the gun makers art. I must admit I am a bit jealous. Use her as she was intended in the field.
Life is too short to hunt with ugly guns.

They switched to the JS version of the 8mm Mauser in 1905 with the current 0.323 groove diameter. A 1913 8mm Mauser would be the updated version.
Nice rifle. I recently entered the 8mm Mauser business myself with a BRNO.
