Was out on my skis in the timber where the snow is still too deep to posthole through. Unfortunately my business of selling shed antlers has morphed into finding and cleaning winterkilled bull skulls. There are alot more skulls than shed antlers anymore. When I find a wolf kill I cant help but think of this animal being pursued from its wintering grounds up into the drainages until they are exhausted and succumb to the hungry pack. I know just where to find these wolf kills, the elk always do the same thing. They run into the timber and up the drainage until they are trapped by deadfall under the waist deep snow. And they die there, eaten alive.

I just heard a report this afternoon of a Wolf/Wolves killing a calf in an enclosed calving pen across the river in WA....

I'm surprised they only killed one....

What is the biggest bull you've found?

For this year your looking at it. This was the first trip into the high country as I have been concentrating on shed antlers down near the snowline. Not many big bulls winter here any more, most of what I find are 3-4 yr old 5x5s or smaller. With the occasional 300+ class 6x6. I found a very nice heavy mature 5x5 winterkill last year. I would much prefer to find shed antlers over dead elk, being a renewable resource and all.

I suspect the older bulls are now either wintering in the park, across over on private ranches in the Madison Valley, or get eaten before they make it out to the Gallatin Canyon area. We seldom see trophy class bulls here anymore.

I did manage to find one shed antler, an 8 pounder representing the first find of the season , Sunday morning. This is after at least 60 hours and countless miles of looking.

Dang. So do you actually live in the Taylor Fork? Hunted that country when I lived in Bozeman. Haven't been back for a few years now. Between the wolves thinning things out a bit and nearly stepping in a pile of griz crap every couple steps, I decided there were better places to hunt elk in Montana.
