Bought a 4" 500 smith a week or so ago. Had a few of the stupidly large versions in the past but never cared for them. Handled a 4" version and it was very well balanced and felt great. Anyway took it out today to the range for some chrono results. Was curious what the short barrel would produce. Took 3 hand loads out with me.
300 grain hornady ftx was a 1577 fps.
440 grain cast performance was 1257 fps.
And just for chits and giggles the 700 grain load was 1026 fps.
Just wanted to share as there really isnt much in the way of data out there for the 4" barrel model. This gun is incredibly accurate and feels great. Most who know me in here know that I'm a single action guy but I think the 500 is gonna see a good bit of use this fall.

That's a compact D/A powerhouse if there ever was one, I had a monster with the 8-3/8ths barrel, bought it for s's&g's, the full power load using the 440's at 1650 fps was not fun to shoot.
I would think the 440's at 1250 would do it all, enjoy your new revolver gunchamp.

I shot one once, yep one shot and handed that monster back to it's owner! John Shaw received a couple from Smith back when they first came out. Both 460 and 500s. We grabbed some ammo cans and went out on a night time jackrabbit safari with them. The "cartoon guns" have just a little flash when you are way out on the high desert, in the black of night..

Shot one of the first edition guns that a friend bought...decided right then if S&W ever came out with a shortie I would buy it..after the 4" hit the market bought the first nice used one I came across...I think it had one round through it... I think the only factory loads I have fired were some Winchester...like 375 grain Platinum...not real sure. I do remember a LE friend had an expired vest....put it on a dummy and the bullet passed through both sides. I've settled on 350 grain bullets. Berry's plated, Speer Soft Point (also a plated bullet), Sierra JHP and Hornady XTP.. Run the Berry's with 18.0 grains of Unique and the others with 20...also have a burn your whiskers load of 43 grains of H110...when you touch it off you can feel the heat on your face and see the fireball in full cloudless sunshine.. ..also picked up one of the 20" barrels for a TC Encore... Was asked to take some Japanese businessmen shooting last year...they had never even seen a real gun before...the 500 always brings a smile...
If you can not deal with reality, reality will deal with you....

I know exactly what you are sayin with the heat on the face. The 300 ftx load was loaded almost to book max. 49 gr of 110 will make your face feel like its on fire haha.

Got the big one, 8 3/8.... Crazy gun....usually shoot the 350 gr XTP over H110 or Lil Gun. Very accurate...the trick is to stop shooting before you start to flinch and before your hand goes numb.
