I'm looking at theming out the Near rail on my Sako and I was wondering if anyone has any experience with it?

I have not but I'm thinking of getting one too. I have confidence in the wedge fit and it would solve all mounting issues.

I spoke to Richard Near about it and he said there has never been an issue with it in the 10yrs he has been making it.

I haven't had any issues with over 30 years of Sako, Leupold, Burris or Conetrol. The Near rail certainly looks better than Weaver, although I never understood why anyone would put Weaver bases on any gun that you wanted to look nice.

I would be using a Near alpha mount...no weavers here

Their Alpha Mount looks pretty nice.

It is very nice, I just put one on my Tikka 223 for coyotes...

I like the looks of the Alpha but a rail will solve any placement issue on any size scope.

I'll be getting the rail anyway for a Sako 75 IV size action. As it stands I have to use a scope with 4" of eye relief to have natural head placement. Any scope with a 3.5" eye relief,unless it has a very long tube causes me to have to stretch my neck way forward to have full view.

He has a 3 ring alphamount that goes onto a rail...the magazine isn't seated in the front so that why it looks that way...not backwards

I had a Near Rail and 3 ring Alpha Mount on a Sako TRG. ROCK SOLID.

Incredible metal work, probably none better. A work of art. Very expensive.

Which Sako? Richard made me one for my 85 Varmint (tapered dovetails). The guy's a fanatical perfectionist.

Anyone had any ejection problems with a Near rail on a Sako 75 or 85?

No ejection issues at all on a Sako 85 Varmint in .223.

Short action Sakos have lower ejection angle than larger actions. There's usually a question of if they'll eject into the scope so a rail on M size or larger would almost certainly be a no-go.

Is that experience with a rail or just speculation?

The only ejection problems I've ever heard of were with 85's in long actions. I've not heard of any 75 ejection problems regardless of action size.They moved the extractor position on the 85's bolt.

That's experience with ejecting into actual scopes. If Near says M actions don't have clearance issues with a rail I don't believe it. I've owned around 10 Sako 85s most of which are M size. Many will hit bottom of a scope tube if mounted with low rings. Topic has been well discussed here and can be confirmed by Eurooptic or any other retailer of Sakos. A rail sits way lower than a scope tube so I just don't believe it would clear.

First thing I do with any new Sako is mount a lapping bar and see if empties will hit it. I then take a piece of paper and hold it over the ejection port while ejecting empties lowering it more each time til it hits. I'm very sure I've never tested a 75 or 85 that would clear a rail.

75 and 85 extractors both sit at 10:00. Lower portion of 85 bolt face is removed to allow a form of CRF. I've had 75s eject into bottom of scopes too although not as common.
