Some nice shooting. Like how she calls hits and misses.
The 30-06 getting it done with a good long-range bullet.

Very impressive. Judging from the flag angle and the grass tops swaying, I would guess the wind speed was about 20 mph. Necessary windage would be many feet. At 2800 yards a minor variation, undetectable from the firing line, over the course of the five seconds, would probably have been enough to cause a miss. Also the sound of the gong would not have been detectable from the firing line for about 8 seconds after a hit.
It would be better if the spotter had sat with her scope directly behind the rifle barrel. That way you can see the wake of the sonic boom in the spotting scope and get a good idea of windage if you can't see the bullet impact.
I suspect (guesstimate) that the bullet transitioned to subsonic some place along the 2800 yards. Going transonic like that introduces a "burble" that affects accuracy slightly. That's why 1000 yard match shooters in "service rifle" matches use an M1A instead of an AR15. It's difficult to make a .223 bullet remain above the speed of sound out to 1000 yards, even with 80 or 90 grain bullets. No problem with a 175 grain SMK in a .308. A 6.5mm 140 grain bullet would work even better.
A friend of mine won the 1000 yard national iron sight championship at Camp Perry with a 30-06 back in the 1990s. He was using a very hot load with 190 grain Sierras and primers glued in with super glue. In those days the round of choice was a .300 Magnum. Nowadays it would be a 6.5x.284. The 6.5 Creedmoor would not pack with those rounds. I suspect that if someone held matches consisting of 20 shots at that gong at 2800 yards, a 30-06 with 230 grain Bergers would clean the Creedmoor's clock.
Which just goes to show:
"There ain't nothin' that you can't fix With 47 dollars and a 30-06."
I wonder where that took place. The accents might have been Australian.
Don't blame me. I voted for Trump.

What, no 6.5 quagmire of SFWA scope??? THe devil you say!

I'm glad people are pushing the envelope, but I lose interest when dispersion becomes greater than the size of the target, i.e. a turkey shoot.

I saw this video a few months ago. They are in New Zealand if I recall.
James Pepper: There's no law west of Dodge and no God west of the Pecos. Right, Mr. Chisum? John Chisum: Wrong, Mr. Pepper. Because no matter where people go, sooner or later there's the law. And sooner or later they find God's already been there.

Shooting that far in that much wind is really a crap shoot. It is amazing he was able to hit the target twice. Funny how the ole 06 can still be relevant all over the world for all kinds of things. As stick would say, HINT........................................

Proving a hundred years and a hundred cartridges later the 30-06 was a correct choice
