One of these 2 exits one was made by a high speed projectile and the other was made by a low speed projectile, the high speed round impacted with about 2700 FPE and the low speed projectile impacted with less than 900 FPE can you tell which is which?
The 300 Winn Mag loaded round is for size comparision......

I'm quite sure range had something to do with bullet speed. Quite often the same bullet at faster speed will expand more, but penetrate less. Or it was a handgun. You are actually looking at the inside of the "exit" wound, not the hair side.......

That is less than 900 Foot Pounds of Energy (FPE). The load had a claimed muzzle velocity of 950 FPS per its manufacteror......

Yo are correct the picture is the inside of the exit side of the rib cage. Both bullets hit and centered a rib on the way in and on the way out and both bullets were not recovered as they both exited and continued on..........

The top photo is of an exit wound made by a 440 grain flat point hardcast from a 500 JRH at a claimed 950 FPS by Buffalo Bore this equates to about 882 Foot pounds of energy. The bottom photo is of an exit wound made by a 180 grain TXS fired from a 300 Winn Mag at an elevation of 6550 ft, at a Lasered 286 yards. These figures are not exact, but realitively close impact velocity of approximately 2660 FPS and over 2800 FPE.
The flat point hard cast left a massive wound.
The Elk a 6X7 as I approced the downed bull,he had his head up so I shot him through the rib cage with the handgun,as an insurance shot. this is the bull

Color me 'not surprised'. Those high dollar- penetrate -everything- bullets act just like solids.

The internal damage was impressive with the TXS and the bull went nowhere after being hit.The bull never gave a clear shot only part of his body was visable as a cow was between us.I waited in the scope for an opertunity and when it came I took it.The TXS destroyed the liver and he only took a couple of steps and just was not able to go. The handgun round exit is the largest that I have seen on Elk through the rib cage and this includes 338 Winn. with 250 partions

The other hole could be made from bone fragments or bullet fragments. It doesn't mean the bullet came apart. Possibly a petal broke off, but it looks more like a bone fragment. I have seen many multiple exit wounds from bone fragments as well as bullet fragments. Flinch

It is a shortened 500 S&W case with a smaller rim diameter,so it can be fit into a Freedom Arms revolver and was designed by Jack Huntington the Ammo was loaded by Buffalo Bore. BFR is chambering revolvers in 500 JRH produced from the custom shop. The full power load is a 425 grain @ 1350 fps from a 5 1/2" barrel
