I have a set of original 1973 Colt Python Target grips for sale.
These came off of a previous owned Python my dad bought for me for my 21st birthday in 1975. I replaced these originals back in the day with a set of Hogue Monogrips, and these have been stored in the original Hogue packaging ever since.
The left grip is in perfect shape, the right has a couple dings in the leading edge of the bottom, and a "dent" in the wood under the curve by the trigger guard, not really noticeable in a side view. Complete with the original Python grip screw.
These are the transitional, or early gen 3 style grips, so my understanding, fairly uncommon to find for sale separately.
This variation looks very similar to gen 3, but has the early style backs with fitting pads, like on gen 2. All early gen 3 grips I have seen were made of mahogany and sprayed with a dark tint to resemble walnut. They are often confused with the later gen 3 (or even mistaken for reproductions), but the following details make them easy to recognize: 1: The upper corners of the checkered area are rounded, whereas 3rd generation has sharp corners.
2: Seen from the bottom, these grips are shaped like a continuous oval like on gen 2, whereas the 3rd generation has a compound curve shape with more or less pronounced corners where the curves meet.
3: The thumb cuts are larger than on gen 3, so this variation is sometimes called “large ear grips”.
$425.00 shipped priority mail in the US only.

Tag. Interesting information. Google can make a guy look pretty smart...... I learned a lot researching exactly what I had. I had no idea there were three generations of Python grips. I copied & pasted the description I finally found online.
