Looking for a new scope for my medium wieght .308 that I use on everything from paper for load development to clays up to 550 (so far) to deer and pigs. These are the ones I am leaning toward so far... Sightron SIIB 3-12x42AO $319.00 Sightron SII 3.5-10x44SF $449.00 Sightron SII Big Sky 6x42 $299.00 Nikon New Monarch 3-12x42SF $429.00 All of their turrets can be reset to zero, even those with hunting turrets. Am torn between the simplicity and potential increased reliability of the straight 6, and the increased magnification and being able to eliminate parallax (a problem I have recently found in my Conquest). Seems to be many folks that like both brands. What do you think? John

Ditto on the 6x42.
Very much nice.
Otherwise, the 3-12 Big Sky.

I haven't tried a Sightron yet, nor have I owned a 6x42 ... so my input is based on power range alone (and the assumption that you will be happy with any of the 4 you mentioned) ...
I'd go with either of the two SF models ... leaning toward Nikon, only because I've had a couple Nikons and can like them a lot ...

All votes for the 6x42 so far. Any dissenters? John

John;
I'll have pics of the 6x42 Big Sky from the user angle up shortly.

BTW - just did a quick and dirty comparison between the Big Sky 6x42 and the FX-III 6x42. No appreciable difference in parallal at about 300 yards.

FWIW, the Sightron low-profile target turrets measure 3/8" high from the body of the scope to the top of the turret.
The FX-III adjustment knobs measure a fat 3/16" when measured in the same fashion.

Just musing aloud, I'm still amazed that Leupold has not yet designed and implemented a hunter's low-pro turret yet ... Nikon has been doing it a while now ... Sightron is on board ... I don't know who else, but I'm sure there are others ... Even Zeiss has their 'target turrets' reasonably low.
I know many Leupold fanatics have no issues with the standard target turrets and M1's ... and really, I don't either ... but it would just be too damn nice if they made some lower ones that looked/functioned more appropriately for a 'traditional' hunting rig ...
Sean ... after seeing those pictures, I'm starting to see why you're so excited with the scope ... it's a handsome scope, and you've said it's function and glass is very good ... price seems very good too ... perhaps it's time to give them a try ...

WGM, You still aren't on the 6x42 wagon yet, either, are you? I'd say the SII Big Sky 6x42, would be a very good intro to both worlds....

I don't know, these T2's on a VX-II ain't bad, although I don't get the hang-up about turret height...

Can't say as I dislike the Leuppie set-up. The FX-III is VERY likely to get turrets....
Still, I can like the Sightron set up much.

Scott ... that scope is very nice ... I'm very close to ordering one up ... but again, just wondering when they're gonna do the same (essentially) for the standard hunting scopes ...
Leupold loves to set the standard for things, but they missed the boat on this one ... but I'll let that slide if they just hurry and catch up with the others re: low pro hunters turrets ... (grin)

You still aren't on the 6x42 wagon yet, either, are you? No ... not on it yet ... only reason really being that I want/need more magnification when doing load development ... I realize that I should just get a good target scope to move from rifle to rifle when working up loads, and then slap on a 6x42 when I'm done ... but I'm just not there yet... I'm sure that within the next year or so I'll get a 6x42 and give it a shot ... (pun intended) ... it's been hard, I'll admit, to pass on all the Leupold 6x42's that have been going for about $250 in the classifieds here lately ... very hard, in fact ... but I'm sure there will be more that show up, soon enough ... (grin)

I'm guessing that extra 1/4" of turret really [bleep] you up in a deer stand?!!!???! more than I'd care to admit ... (grin) seriously for a moment ... it's more of an aesthetic thing for me ... Ultimately, it doesn't bother me to have the standard height turrets ... just that I'd prefer to have shorter ones ... the standard offerings ain't stopped me yet from having turrets added to my hunting scopes ...

Those were just the sort of pictures I was hoping to see. Many thanks VA.
