Sherry just got this stock done for me, it'll go on my 1927 vintage Winchester Model 54; the pattern is the old Winchester pattern and the execution is very nice and really makes the grain pop out. I'm happy.

Didn't she used to do the checkering for Kimber of Oregon? I recognize the first name Sherry. She was recommended to me a few years ago by a custom stockmaker.

She is GOOD!

Great! It's nice to see that grain pattern still shine through. I finished a stock last winter and am contemplating checkering. Those images make me think I should ship it out rather than take it one myself. Thanks for posting, 1Minute

....Oregon45, Is that type work contracted for by hourly rate, or are you given a finished price according to the chosen pattern?

Set rate dependent on pattern; Sherry has a price list on her website www.checkering.com Her prices are in line with other checkerers with similar experience and expertise, I went with her because she's a half hour from my house and I'd heard excellent things about her work.

I just put the first, and likely only, coat of finishing on the checkering; 1/3 Tru- Oil 2/3 paint thinner and the grain really "popped." I'm going to let it sit for two days then maybe I'll put another coat on, likely not though. I'll get pics up as soon as I get the rifle put back together.

Yeah, IIRC, she had over 8 years with them before she went on her own.. I think I had her to a job for me about 6-7 years ago for the first time and I've had her do my checkering ever since..

Being a half hour away's not bad either.. laugh

Here's the checkering after one coat of 1/3 Tru Oil 2/3 Paint thinner; I don't think I need to do another coat.

That's a beautiful stock. Is it from an original Model 54?
The figure is outstanding, as is Sherry's checkering.
Model 54's have been a favorite of mine, although I don't own one. My Step Dad had a 54 in 22 Hornet that I always admired. But his didn't have Walnut like yours.

The stock isn't original, it was a duplicate made to the factory pattern.

Thanks,

Who did the duplicating?
I have my eye on a Model 54 in 22 Hornet that's for sale. A stock like yours would be great on it.

I don't know who did the duplicating; the gun came with both this stock and a factory stock.
