After all, it's not blue! grin

Here's the latest Dogzapper Special 223AI to hit the fire. It's the little brother to the 280AI that I have posted before in the custom rifles section.

No new ground here, really. It's a M700 short action with a PN #1 contour, 8 twist, 3 groove, super match 22 1/2" barrel. It sits in a McMillan standard fill compact stock with 40% purple / 40% light gray / 20% turquoise. It's got a 1" decelerator to protect my shoulder from the hot 223AI loads.

The crown gives new meaning to "floorboard proof", and it's got the factory trigger tuned to a dead crisp 2 pounds. It has an old timey safety tab that locks the bolt down with the safety on; the base of the bolt handle had to be milled for this to work.

On top it's got a Leupold Mark 2 3-9X40 Hunter with L.R. reticle sitting in Conetrol low Custum rings. The Conetrols are 2 oz heavier than Talley LW's but significantly lower; much better looking as well. It balances between the lug and the front guard screw. My favourite gunsmith "Greydog" built it for me. It's a keeper!

Mtn Hunter, Steelhead and CAS helped me design this one, I appreciate their advice.

Oh yeah, sorry for the pic, I'm not in Montana and couldn't find a fencepost. wink

Not in anger, just played with it on the drive home today at rocks and such. With the one load I supplied for Greydog to try it, loaded up for an old rifle, it shot an easy 5/8" at 100 and about 2" at 300 yards. That with a 50 V-Max at 3600+.

Greydog reports that when zeroed with that load at 100, the first dot is dead on at 300 yards and 9X.

I'll fireform some rounds on Tuesday and load up some 50 grain V-Max's and 75 A-Max's in the formed brass for later in the week. Stay tuned...

Oh yeah, this will come as no surprise to you, but this little rifle balances as well as anything I have ever tried. We hit a home run with this one. grin

Oh, that #1 Pac-Nor is damn near perfect for the 223 in my way of thinking.

Beautiful build Rick. What does it weigh? I'd rather copy your specs than reinvent the wheel.

Other than the hairy arm, that's a damn fine photo too. grin

I'm thinking right at 7 1/2 pounds. I haven't got it on an accurate scale yet.

Just call me gorilla... wink

Damn nice pic of a damn nice rifle. I got a chubby...

Brad and his 'fencepost'. We need to just get him to ship it around the country for all of us to use. I never thought the 'fencepost thread' was going to get that outta hand, or have any lasting effects on the 'fire. For that, I'm truly sorry smile

I dunno... Lately I've been thinking a lot about building an all out custom on a Kimber 84 action. When my gunsmith and I had the barrel off the 338 Federal last time, we scaled the action, recoil lug, mag box, spring and follower and all of that came to 1 7/8 Lbs. Put all that in a Lone Wolf Summit XL and an even skinnier fluted barrel and a complete rifle all dressed up might go 5 1/2 Lbs. Perfect for back-pack hunting the high country
