I have a 308W... 24" barrel with a 1 in 14" ROT

I'd like to set this rig up to shoot out to 500/600yds...

What type of scope/bases and rings do you recommend?

What bullets and powders should I try first?

Would a 150-grainer in 1/14" ROT be okay?

May be a LR deer/lope rifle someday.... laugh

German Salazar at www.riflemansjournal.blogspot.com has a great article on heavy bullets in a 1/13" twist 30-06 that should be useful for you.

I edited out the part of my post where I said that 600 yards is not long range because I didn't want your discussion to get hijacked. But once you shoot at 600 yards you'll find that it really isn't that far. Particulaly with good optics or quality iron sights. Find a club that has an open night on their 600 yard range and ask for help. That's what I did and since then 600 yards hasn't seemed all that far. On targets that is. Game is a whole other matter and a different discussion.

155 gr bullets from Hornady, Sierra, Nosler and Berger all shoot well from my 24" 1:12 twist .308 Win. Did shoot some 150 Sierras, and found them to be very accurate as well. The rifle is shot quite often at 600 yards, sometimes out to 800, with excellent accuracy.

On the twist, I shot 168's & 175's well from a 1:13 twist. The 155's shot a little better from that rifle though. The 1:12 barrel doesn't seem to care what I put through it from 110 gr varmint bullets to 190 gr match bullets.

Varget is a good choice of powder, use Hodgdon's data. RL-15 is also very good.

I've been using a 4.5-14x Leupold on the rifle for a long time. The Badger base & rings are very solid, but add a bit of weight to a hunting rifle.

Good advice from Guy right there.

I've had my best results with Lapua's 155gr scenar, Lapua brass and Hodgdon's Varget.

500 to 600 yards with that combo is a piece of cake. I've used that bullet to take a lot of deer and antelope as well.

Luck....is the residue of design...

Guy and Pat-

Thanks a bunch!

That's the type of info I was looking to gain here!

I appreciate it grin

I have a CZ USA 550 American 308W and I re-shaped/refinished the stock to lighten it up considerably. It shoots bug holes with factory ammo 168gr SMK but haven't tried anything else.

For the type of work I need I'm thinking the 155gr Scenar will be the cat's meow....I hope grin

Something fast and flat for my distances!

If the Lapua's don't work, try the 155grn Amax. In fact if the Amax is noticeably cheaper where you are, you might want to start with with the Amax...

As already mentioned Varget and RL-15 seem to be the commonly recommended powders..

What scope are you using? Did you intend dial turrets to get your elevation or holding over using something like a TDS reticule?

Are you sure your rifle is a 1/14?

That is an odd twist for a factory rifle. 1/12 is the standard twist rate for 308. I don't know why CZ would produce a rifle with such a non-standard twist, and all the CZ rifles I have seen are 1/12. You might measure it yourself for future reference.

Anyway, the 155 A-Max or 155 Berger, 168 A-Max are good choices for target work and hunting, and the 168 SMK ammo that you are using now will also work fine to 600 yards.

If you have a faster twist you can go to a 175, 185 or 190 Berger or SMK.

Varget is a top powder choice for any of those.

CZ-List the 550 with a 308 as a 1-in-12.

I saw 1 in 14 also. Then I realixed 1-in-14 was the 22-250 twist. BMT
