Great picture!

It's as if I just stepped into it...

I can feel my nose hairs freezing as I inhale, I can hear the soft crunch of the snow under my feet as I shift my weight, the faint breeze moving the vapor of my breath just out of my peripheral vision.
The utter silence until a magpie calls out from just out of sight, then glides away down the hill, into the spruce.

Thanks. You brought back a lot of good memories. smile

Thought I saw Ingwe in his leopard thong back in the trees, but when I took a second look all I saw was ice.

I question some of the '30-below' photos I see when there seems to be too much moisture in the air - fog, snow, etc.

Not your photo, that's what 30-below looks like.

Was out in -20 one time and not really dressed for it. Pa damp cold. Lasted about 20minutes. OK, I'm a woose.

Saw a tv program about Ak. Someplace where it get downs to -50. Then they get that Chinook wind and the temps may go up to -20 or -30. Kids were out playing in the snow while wearing a t-shirt. It was tv, so can't vouch for the truth of all of it.

Same here in Southern Alberta. Had it last year for several days in a row @ -40C which FWIW is -40F too. Makes for brisk day indeed!

I love it on those cold clear nights when there hasn't been a breath of wind for days- then the bottom falls out and it snows. Yeah, snows, with crystal clear air under a brilliant sky full of stars, too cold to hold that last whiff of moisture.

I've actually seen -51F on a Certified Thermometer at Warnock Corral on the Snake River-Imnaha Divide. We were absolutely froze out of the saddle and walking. We simply could not stay on top and, even though it was midnight, we pressed on until 4 AM in the morning when we reached our Temperance Creek Camp.

It was a balmy -21 there.

Even so, we took care of our horses, that's the first rule, and collapsed into our sleeping bags.

I did some serious elk killing the next noon and was soooo delighted to thrust my hands into the warm guts. Hell YEAH.

Funny story. When Karen was going through menapause (do they ever stop?) ... Uhhh, let's say, when she was trying some natural remedy for same, and it wasn't working.

Anyway, we were eating dinner in a ranch house back of Jordan, Montana. It was dark ourside and cold, really cold ... -29 or thereabouts.

Karen was there with the guys in her long john tops and she suddenly scooted her chair back and said, "Gottal go."

She ran through both doors of the warming porch and out into the yard. She immediately stripped off her long john top and stood there in her skivies ... a happy and comfortable look upon her face.

And we were all looking out the window. I guess Karen never realized there was a 1000 Watt perimeter light right above her.

After a minute or five, she suddenly shivered and looked at the half-dozen bewhiskered guys looking at her through the now-fogging up window.

I'll have to say that she walked in every bit the lady. Head held high and her long john top on.

And she said, "Dammit, it's COLD out there!"

Yep, Who woulda guessed gringringrin
