Just purchased one of these the deluxe version pretty rifle. If anyone of you savage collectors could tell me anything about this rifle besides a winchester is better I would appreciate it. How does it shoot compared to the remingtons and winchesters. Can I use hi-velocity ammo in it? thanks for the info--I am new here

Welcome to the forum. I can't help with the info you need but I'm sure someone here can help you. I take that the 29 is a 22 ? Bolt, semi ??

I don't think anyone here will try to tell you that a Winchester is better. There are several versions of the 29. Please give me all but the last two numbers of the serial so I know which we are talking about. Yes, the 29's will shoot high velocity with no problem.

I have all the major brands and models of the vintage pump .22's and the Savage is my favorite. They shoot great and most that I have fired shoot several brands of ammo well, instead of being finicky about whats fired. I currently have two 29's in the prewar like yours, one with round barrel the other with octagon and two 1903's. You need to find yourself a 1903 next. These are the same style of action only they have a magazine that locks in front of the trigger guard. Great little pump guns, all of them. Ryan

Anytime is fine. I'm here every day. No, I doubt that you will find a proof mark only a company name and address on the barrel.

Hope I can chime in with another Model 29 year of manufacture request. I just got it and it's a nice pre-war with fancy buttstock and semi-fancy checkering. Serial number is 386X. Any info appreciated. It seems to me that there is not too much information out there on these series of nice 22's. Thanks again.

The first version 29 has the bolt release at the front of the trigger guard. The release is tappered on the front edge. The next version release sets back farther and is tappered to the rear. The serial numbers are very mixed up on the 29's. If yours is a four number serial without a letter following, I think it would be a first year 29. The standard stock would be a plain butt and grooved forearm. Yours sound special. I think there is Savage log info on the 29 till around 1931. I would send for a letter and hope that it is a factory special order. Do you have a picture you could post or e-mail to me? Keep us posted on what you find.

When ever you can, would be great. Don't often see a special 29.

well I have the info here for you Rick99. the serial number is 50130L. The upper tang is tapped for a tang sight. Do you know what the tang sight is stamped on the bottom to fit this. they usually have a letter code stamped on bottom---lyman and marbles. No rust or pitting but has patina and a plumb colored blueing. No bad gouges but finish on wood starting to deteriorate and many fine scratches, pretty checkering thats why I purchased it. Left side of receiver says SAVAGE MODEL 29A. In front of rear sight the company logo says SAVAGE ARMS CORPORATION UTICA,NY------MADE IN USA. then ahead of receiver left side 22 S L&LR it all original screws and buttplate. I paid 260.00 dollars did I get taken to cleaners, its got a sweet light creep free trigger, they don't make them like this anymore.

kks1956,

Yours is one of the round barreled version made after WWII. I would say a late 40's production. The next version went back to the plain butt stock and grooved forearm.

The "L" in the serial number indicates that it is a Savage. House Brands had a "K" and I think there were more House Brand rifles made in the 30's up to WWII that there were Savage's. Both used the same serial range. The letters were added to the serial starting around 1931.

I'd say you paid about the average price for one.

Does yours have the "SVG" on the butt plate or not? I'm still gathering data.

Lyman tang sight is marked "SM". Marbles is listed as a "S2", I don't think I have seen one though. Savage made a tang sight for the 29. The sight number is 100 and the rifle could be ordered with the sight as a 29-S before WWII.
