Oh please, a real dog would say...

"Leave the stuff I hid where it is and don't you EVER give my stuff to another dog. And I'll be damned if some shelter mutt is ever gonna pee in MY yard....."

Had one like that, and have one that will look like that in a few years when the muzzle gets a little gray.

My Dillon was a pound adoption about two years old when I got him, He was a replacement for the one in my avatar, when he died my female was grieving herself to death an needed company. I had him ten years and one month.
My current Lab, Georgie, was a rescue that had Parvo as a pup and was taken in to be put down, but the vet decided to try and save her.
I got her thinking she was unhealthy and would only live a couple of years. I only wanted to give her a good home.
Turns out she's most likely to outlive me.
They all leave a hole in our hearts, I've had to put down three in the last six years.

Tripper Lab turned 10 sometime in the last few days- I never knew his exact birth date- estimated sometime in early June. He was a give-away for unknown reasons- I picked him up from a grooming shop at about 10 weeks of age . His body conformation is rather slender for a Lab- but there no longer remains any doubt he is pure Lab- and a good one at that. Smartest dog I've ever owned- usually about a half-step ahead of me... and he's only about a half step behind the wife... smile.

Retrieved his first grouse at 16 weeks- one that someone else had shot a bit earlier and "lost". Stayed 30 feet ahead of me all the 2.5 miles back to the truck, bird in mouth. Then he gave it to me.

When he lost track of a flying un-shot-at bird, he looked to the tree tops first thing- none of my other Labs/Lab-mixes ever did that- they'd search the ground at the point they'd lost sight, until somewhere along the line they would learn better, and start looking high.

Then there was the time my wife decided to get fancy, and bought decorative (expensive) lever door handles for the house. That lasted less than 24 hours. She didn't like the dog letting himself in and not closing the door behind him...

Well, except for the Dachshund on the treed birds-he had mostly eye-ball-to- eyeball confrontations with birds on the ground-and the birds seldom backed down... but even he would find treed birds and mark them by barking on occasion. Despite being older, he learned it from Trip.

Trip's got way more white markings now than the dog above- most of his underside and lower legs are showing white- a lot of it, as well as his muzzle.

Doesn't have nearly the energy he used to have either. Thank God! smile But it has been a very noticeable decline in the last year... A mile roady or a couple mile hike puts him pooped for the next 24 hours- no doubt partly due to my busy schedule not keeping him in better shape with more regular exercise.

When I got him, I was thinking he'd be my last big dog...

Maybe, maybe not...makes me tired just thinking about it!

But of a certainty, it will be a give-away/pound dog, unless a Dachshund. Might have to buy one of those...Do 't see many of those as give-aways.

For the wife, of course...

Several years ago I had a black lab named Casey. Great dog. The last 2 or 3 years of his life,
he had diabetes and I had to give him a shot each and every day. A pill would not work.
The last year of his life, Casey looked just like the dog pictured.

Still miss him and I can not write any more.

Plinker, That hit the nail on the head. Bless you.

We've got a senior citizen German Shepherd that we adopted from the local humane shelter about nine months ago. Cowboy's around 13 to 15 y/o. He was a mess healthwise when we got him, but with a malignant tumor removed, his ears and teeth worked on, good food, some arthritis meds, and lots of hugs and love, he's a totally different dog. He romps and plays with the other heathens like he's half his age, and has a heart of gold. Wife saw him on the shelter's Facebook page and was drawn to him, bless her heart.
