(NEW YORK) There is utter panic on the Carnival cruise ship where a Dallas hospital employee who helped care for an Ebola patient who died has been put in quarantine. The ship is now being sent back to Texas after being turned away from both Belize and Mexico, one of the passengers said.

People are scared, passenger Jon Malone told ABC News as the Carnival Magic cruise ship was waiting miles off shore from Cozumel, Mexico. Ive seen people crying.

The chaos started Friday morning when there was an announcement on the ships intercom saying that someone who worked in the lab who handled the person in Dallas blood was on the ship, Jons brother and fellow passenger Jeremy Malone told ABC. The cruise line said the woman is in isolation on board the ship.

Youre using the same buffet line as someone else, the same waiters, the folks that clean the state rooms. If someone was cleaning their state room and cleaned yours right after, the exposure that you have there to elevators he said. Its very tight quarters and a lot of interaction. Its really difficult to control any type of virus thats on a cruise ship. Its like a floating petri dish. It spreads very rapidly.

Though the cruise line has not released the name of the passenger or her location, the Malones fear that her room may be on their floor because when Jeremy walked outside his room Friday morning, he saw a group of 30 to 40 workers gathered with buckets of what looked like cleaning chemicals.

Some of them had masks on, Jon Malone said.

They had a pink liquid in clear spray bottles and they had little wagons that had grey containers like mop buckets filled with chemicals, he said. Theyre cleaning elevators. Ive seen people with pink liquid cleaning the bar area and the handrails.

The workers wouldnt answer questions about what room or floor the hospital employee was staying on, but Jeremy said that he fears that she was on the 11th floor because the workers kind of looked at each other and smiled. They didnt know what to say.

The first signs of trouble emerged Thursday night when they did not leave Belize at 6 p.m. as intended to make their way to Cozumel.

The ship wasnt going anywhere. We were parked maybe 10 miles from the shore, so that was unusual, Jeremy Malone said. Several hours go by and we still havent moved and they hadnt made any announcements or anything.

The first word they received came while attending a comedy show on board when an employee indicated that a passenger was ill and needed to be taken off the ship, but made no mention of Ebola.

Carnival released a statement Friday confirming the presence of a lab supervisor from Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital on board the ship, but said that the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention deemed the woman low risk.

At no point in time has the individual exhibited any symptoms or signs of infection and it has been 19 days since she was in the lab with the testing samples, the statement said. The incubation period for Ebola is believed to be two to 21 days.

Neither Carnival nor any government officials from Belize, Mexico or the United States have confirmed the reported change of travel plans, but the Malones shared a letter that they received from Carnival Friday morning that the ship planned to arrive in Cozumel at 10 a.m. and depart at 6 p.m.

Jeremy Malone said the captain and cruise director have subsequently made another announcement saying they are headed back to Galveston, Texas.

Carnival Cruise is definitely a carnival for sure.

The captain should announce on loudspeaker, "Calm down folks, Zero said it's hard to catch Ebola."

From that article:

So, if I'm reading this right, the vessel DID
make a landfall in Belize ?

Did the passengers and crew disembark ?

Bilges pumped ?

.....Garbage landed ?

Wow, all in the rear view now.

Sad that Mexico and Belize are smart enough to not let it in their country when we willingly import it.

And then there's this:

Wait for the test results

I am thinking I should stay here in Korea for a bit. Only thing going on here is the continuum of stink, fish, everywhere.

I do not understand the health workers that get on the cruise or the one that got on the plane. I guess they may have paid for the trip already and did not want to loose their money. But they had to realize that there was a risk. The one that got on the plane when she already had a fever made no sense at all. She should have known better.

According to the Washington Post, YES.

Correction: An earlier version of this story quoted reports from Belize that the ship had been denied entry to the port. Carnival said that the vessel has already made its stop in Belize, and all passengers except the worker and spouse were free to disembark.

The only thing that would make this better is if it was one of those GAY cruises.

Who couldn't appreciate the irony of a ship full of q u eers freaking out over someone with a dangerous, infectious disease that is spread via blood/seamen/feces.

How [bleep] ignorant can people be???

Ever since we have known of Ebola there have been lab tech and researchers who may have handled the virus. Hundreds to maybe low thousands of them. People working in labs from all across the country. People working in labs from all across the globe.

In all that time, in all those labs, with all those samples handled by all those people, ZERO infections other than USAMRID at Reston with the lone airborne variant which does not produce disease in humans. And at that, it was an infection from a variant from another continent where the virus had no known history.

And the lunatics here can't seem to get their head around how expensive this will be if we don't do whatever it takes to put that fire out in West Africa. We can quarantine it there. We can control it there. We can prevent it reaching here if we act there. Trying to close our borders to a disease has never worked. Ever. Quarantine has worked. Repeatedly. In Africa. To control Ebola.

Whatever the mistakes made by Dallas Presbyterian, whatever the mistakes made by CDC, whatever the mistakes made by WHO, there are only three known infected in the US as of today. Even were it ten times that number, that's not a bad record for infectious disease, and damned impressive for a disease that appears to require very few virus particles to infect. Typical infectious disease for which we have vaccine, and which we understand well, is virtually never this limited.

In West Africa, notoriously corrupt, severly impoverished, with very limited medical care, professonals and facilities, there is something like ten thousand or so infections. When you have a densely populated region with people living in slum conditions you can be quite certain that a lot of other common diseases kill a lot more people. Consider their reaction to Ebola and their denial that many cases are indeed Ebola n that light and it becomes a lot more comprehensible. The disease is not out of control. Ignorance is.

That sums it up nicely.

Got mixed thoughts on this one.

We all love Bush Sr.(who did the 1989 ban on imported assault rifles via Executive Order) and we love Bush Jr.(who did the 2005 ban on imported barrels and receivers for those assault weapons by having ATF do the administrative rule change).

On the one hand, Obama is continuing the Bush family legacy which is a good thing in a way. The flip side though is the AK ban (or any other ban on imported self loading firearms) is for a republican to make. Overall it was not very classy for Obama to usurp one of the bread and butter moves historically done by republican presidents.
