Hi Guys,
With a Nice Store Credit in my pocket I want to buy a nice easy to handle rifle.
Here is what I am looking at:
Remington 7 CDL and 700 Mountain
Savage 114 & 116
Ruger ?
Kimber 84m
Caliber is .308. Perfer 20", but will consider 22".
7 lbs. (without glass) or lighter.
LOP Under 14"
Everyone likes a sub moa @100 yards, but this is a deer/moose rifle. This is not a stand rifle either, hence the weight restriction.
What would you do or have done?

Tikka T3 lite or savage 11 with a blind mag are both 6.5lbs or less.

mine are 22" except one win super grade, which is 24" i'd get the 308 with a 22" tube, though i don't think anyone could tell the difference in weight (unless they were told) between a 22 and a 24" barrel. ymmv.

Out of those listed, I'd take the 84M.

While the 700's have a pretty stock their machinery is just push feed without a decent safety. The extractor is delicate, weak.
Look at the Kimber 84m's and some Ruger 77's.
It's off season now. Take a ride to some big gun shops and handle them.
Many new rifles come with a soft recoil pad like the Decelerator pad. Nothing like what we used to get with a hard butt plate.
All guns should be locked up when not in use!

Gee, the marine snipers use those 700 rems with their weak extractors, faulty safeties and push feeds quite effectively against targets that can shoot back. Maybe someone either doesn't know what they're talking about or they're just plain full of [bleep].
Aim for the exit hole.

Maybe someone either doesn't know what they're talking about or they're just plain full of [bleep]. Marine snipers use "custom" rifles built on 700 actions. I wonder how many Remington parts are left when they finish. They also carry them into battle in padded cases and if anyone is shooting back at them things are FUBAR. For your use I'd buy the Kimber 84. The 22" barrel still gives you good velocity and more important balance. Stillbeeman, I didn't start this thread for arguments or make fun of other member's opinions.
I invite Savage99's opinion, whether I agree or not.
BTW, Don't think for a second that Our Marines go into position with their M40A5 that is the same 700 you and I can buy tomorrow. Far from it!

I just checked with my store and they have a Classic in .308.
Kimber also offeres 1/12 twist compared to 1/10. Splitting hairs, but I like 1/12 in a 22".

I bet the snipers use the exact same stuff we have available to us....
When we gun nuts have a rifle built we use the best parts available and I sincerely doubt there is some "other" stuff out there that is available to them that we can't access.

I saw figures from a recent MEU float. Half of their M40s were damaged or brokdn beyond use in a 7 month float.

Tom264, I know very well a young man who was a sniper platoon leader and now a recon Captain, they have their own shop where marines build/rebuild their rifles.
The sad thing is most of us do sport better binos and rangefinders than our soilders do.

84m Classic .308 22" 1/12 twist 5 lbs. 10 ounces.

I spent some time with my friend the marine recon a month ago and quized him about guns and gear;his spotting scope looked to be from the 70's he tought. They used their own money to buy Leica rangefinders for themeselves.. I hooked his dad up with Doug and he swung them a great deal...just another wonderful thing Doug/cameraland has quietly done.
