Reading Sitkas post about altering the shotgun stock got me to wondering, what is cast off? Could you also fill me in on other stock terminology?

pointer
Cast-off means the stock is "bent" at the wrist (where you wrap your thumb around it) back toward the stock-side eye. IOW if you looked at a right-handed shooter, from above, with a firearm shouldered, the barrel would point to the left of the stock direction.

Cast-off puts the stock angle away from the face. The same stock to a leftie would have cast-on.

The heel of the butt is the larger, more rounded end; the toe is the pointier end.

Drop refers to the distance from the heel of the stock to the centerline of the bore. The comb is the top edge of the stock, its forward end is called the nose.

Length of pull is the distance from the center of the butt to the trigger.

There are other terms for parts, but that should cover most of them...
art
Mark Begich, Joaquin Jackson, and Heller resistance... Three huge reasons to worry about the NRA.
