I am contemplating having one of my rifles re-barreled to 284 winchester. The rifle itself is controlled round feed and has an internal mag box of 2.81 in. I was wondering if there are any issues I should be aware of. Thanks for any advice.

There's been a ton of discussion on that here in the past. Suffice to say that there can be significant feeding problems, especially the rounds from the left side of the mag. Be sure to use a smith who is familiar with this, and KNOWS what he is doing.

dronofrio,

Make sure that the barrel and receiver diameter are large enough to take the pressure with the larger chamber. Look at the barrel thread diameter. You should be conserned about 'Hoop Strength' in these areas.

As an example, the Winchester Short Action M/70 would be fine and has been chambered in that caliber, but the little Kimber 84M has a scaled down action designed around the 308 cartridge with a small diameter barrel with small barrel threads. Opening it up to the 284 would leave a thin wall barrel in the chamber area.

I had a pre-64 Win model 70 rebarreled to 6mm/284 and it fed well with minimal fussing. I have seen more than a few '98 Mausers in 6/284 and other variants that seemed to feed well enough. Agreed on making sure you have enough meat in the reciever and barrel shank area.

Thanks guys. I may give it a shot, but I don't know that it offers enough added advantage over the 7mm-08 to worry about.

What specific action are you considering? Some will workonly with very extensive modification to the receiver and the box.

The 284 has a cool factor that the 7mm-08 doesn't have. cool

I was looking at the Winchester Model 70, as I picked up one from CDNN and can not decide what to do with it.

I imagine if it feeds before the conversion, it will feed after. I have a couple Ackley rifles, and even they both feed fine. One is push, the other is crf.

The .284 is quite a bit more gun than a 7/08 in my opinion. And does have a uniquness and coolness to it as well. I would go .284 and carry on happily. (actually, if it were me I would make it a 6/284 or a 35/284, but that is another topic smile ) CRF model 70's will feed a surprisingly wide range of case sizes and shapes with minimal difficulty. I have either owned or used pre-64 model 70's that were simply re-barreld or rechambered to such calibers as 6/284. 6.5/284, 375WBY, 458 Lott, 300WBY and a few others that worked terrificly with only the barest attention given them in the area of feeding.

Real world, no it doesn't bring enough mo speed to the table to be worth it IMO, but, I totally understand the want. If I really wanted more speed than the 7/08 (note I didn't say need...) I'd seriously consider just AI'ing the 7/08 and viola you're at a 284.

I've messed with the 284 based rounds a bit on CRF and PF actions and have yet to find one that I considered to feed in a manner in which I found acceptable (to me).

Now a dakota #10 in a 284....grins

Last thought, if I recall right the lil M70's short actions had a spacer in them and it seems to me that the one smith that I know from Montana that did some 284 work would remove those to get a bit more oal.

Good luck to ya

I'd suggest you get a scope with some dots in it, and then the speed differences become a non issue. What you can do with a 140 in the 7/08 @ 2800 you can do with a 284 @ 2900 and vice versa.
