Had a mountain goat hunter hit a mature billy in the lungs @ 253 yds, didn't exit! 300Win mag 180 gr. The really odd part is the goat stayed on his feet. He walked 50 yds, laid down and rolled 60 yds. The shooter was told to break the shoulder, but like everyone else his instincts told him to lung-shoot.

Incidentally all four rifles are shooting under 1/4 MOA at 100 yds consistently. I have not found a need to shoot them at 300 yds to see tiny groups.

You might want to think twice about that.

I shot this 100 yard .8 group out of a light mountain rifle 300 WSM shooting 168 VLD's.
You can then see how they performed at 300 yards.

The rifle was capable of shooting 1.5 groups at 300 yards with 200 AB's.

I didn't say I didn't shoot those VLDs at longer distances, I have. I meant that I didn't need to shoot at 300 yds to see the bullets "go to sleep" and shoot tighter groups. I HAVE heard from many that the VLDs may not settle down at 100 yds. All of mine have. That was the point I was making.

So far only one animal has been taken with the VLD. It was a coues wt at 525 yds with the 257 ROY and the 115 VLD. Entrance was just behind leading shouder and exited just above the elbow centered through the bone of the offside shoulder. Exit hole was around 1 1/2" in dia. Nicked heart and slammed lungs. DRT.

Antelope definitely succumb to 168 gr Berger vld's out of my 7mm mag at 350 yds rather quickly. No pics but they work very well. Will try them on elk this week. This load shoots sub 1" at 200 yds.

One thing I learned the hard way with the VLD bullets,(I shoot 139 Lapuas,140 Bergers in 6.5-284) I was not Happy with my groups at first, one major problem was not using a VLD inside chamfer tool. I was using a standard chamfer tool and the angle was too steep and was tearing the jackets on some of the VLD bullets.

I go one step further after using the VLD inside chamfer tool I take a piece of Scotchbrite in one hand while holding the brass in the other and press the mouth of the case against the scotchbrite and twist the case, this leaves the mouth nice and smooth and I never have to worry about the jackets snagging when I seat them.

DD, I have many times comtemplated buying a VLD chamfer tool. After reading your post, I might get one. My brass is on its 4th or 5th round being fired with 0 problems, but I have had to trim it... Wonder if the VLD chamfer is in need...

Dang, I haven't tried that yet, and I already own a VLD tool, but never use it. Thanks for reminding me!

I finally had the opportunity to shoot my 300WM with 168 VLD's at 300 yards yesterday. I managed to shoot a five round two inch group from a shaky bench. I'll limit my hunting at this range until I get more experience. I will be shooting paper at 500 and 600 yards this coming weekend. Yup, the VLD will be my deer pill for 2008.

While I have found the 168gr VLD to be a great bullet it seems to work better in the 30-06 and 300WSM, my last 300WM just loves the 210gr VLD.
If your 500-600 yard shooting this weekend is not as great as you would like give the 210's a try.

TexTBag....Have you cronied that load from the .25WSSM?
I use the same bullet in my 250AI. I think if I could hold my rifle, 700SA, 24x1x10 bbl still, I`d have a 3 shot bug-hole.
I`m getting 2900fps.

Thanks

A buddy of mine just sent me a photo of his recent antelope. It was a 300yd shoulder shot with a 190VLD/300RUM. The off-side shoulder was practically gone. He's thinking of going with a different bullet for his elk.

While thats an ugly wound the same thing might happen with other bullets. The doe I shot at 315 yds with the 168 VLD from a 7mm WSM showed a much smaller exit wound but the bullet hit the base of the deers neck.

If one aims at a shoulder with a magnum it seems what happened could be expected.

There is a suggested maximum quarry game weight for the use of Berger VLD bullets. It may be about 400 lbs? That would question VLD's on elk.

I hear what your saying. I exchanged emails with Walt Berger and he advised not to go over 168 with deer size game for fear of pencil through. He recommended the 155's but I elected the 168's.

I'll start at the 168's and gradually work up. The above antelope pic proves other-wise.

You'll soon wonder how you ever got by without a reloading set-up. You can get a decent chrono for $100. I shot my last one on purpose and told my wife that she was buying me a new one for my birthday. After all the cussing I laid on that old chrono, she didn't object.

A Chrony is a must have. Else you have no damned idea what the load is really doing, other than the paper results, which only show part of the equation.
